COMPANY HISTORY

When Ladder 4 was originally organized, they were part of the volunteer fire department. They were located below Front Street on Catherine Street and they were known as the "Weccacoe Hose Company." They were organized on Jaunary 8, 1842.

When the Philadelphia Fire Department became a paid department, Ladder 4 was known as "Truck D" and their station was located at 119 Queen Street, where they spent about 4 years. In 1874, they received a new station which was at 319 Union Street, which was later re-named to Delancey Street in 1877.

On May 25, 1953, they were moved to Engine 23's station located at 239 South 6th Street. This was the first time that Ladder 4 was housed with another company. They were located here for a little over 8 years before being assigned to a different station.

Ladder 4 moved into Engine 40 which was located at 65th Street and Saybrook Avenue. They moved in on September 18, 1961.

On October 28, 1988, Ladder 4 became a Tower Ladder. Before then, they were a conventional ladder company. When Ladder Company 6 was getting a new ladder, Tower Ladder 6's 1986 Mack Baker was re-assigned to Tower Ladder 4 and the old all-red paint scheme was replaced with the new white-over-red scheme.
