Engine 6 was first organized on April 26, 1819. At that time, the Fire Department was a volunteer department. During the volunteer times, the fire companies did not have numbers, they had names. Engine 6 was known as the "Good Intent Fire Company #28 of Kensington." They were housed in a station at Prince Street and Frankford Road.
When the Fire Department became a Paid Department on March 15, 1871, Engine 6 was stationed at 134 Allen Street. They were housed here for only about 4 years, when they got a new station.
That new station was located at 1118 East Montgomery Street. They moved in during 1875.
After staying on Montgomery Street for approximately 77 years, they moved into a station at Belgrade and Huntingdon Streets, which at the time was already occupied by Ladder Company 16. They moved in on October 22, 1952.
In January 1997, Engine 6 received a new pumper. That new pumper was a 1996 KME, which was equipped with a 30-gallon foam tank and featured a top-mount pump. They received a top-mount pumper because of their frequent runs on Interstate-95 and the top mount pump is safer for the driver/pump operator instead of the typical sidemount pump.
Engine 6 became known as "Pipeline" 6 in February of 1997.
