COMPANY HISTORY

Written by: Pat Turner

Pipeline 50 was organized on May 6, 1901 in a firehouse located on the northwest corner of Park Avenue and Cambria Street in North Philadelphia. Their firehouse is one of the oldest in continuous use by the Philadelphia Fire Department and has been home to many disbanded and relocated companies, including Chemical 1 and Light Wagon 1. During the heavy fire years of the 1970s, then-Engine 50 was one of many engine companies assigned a Tactical Unit as a second apparatus in an attempt to reduce the wear and tear on their primary apparatus. Pipeline 50 became a 5-in hoseline company on October 31, 1991 and is currently assigned a 1995 KME 1500-gpm pumper with a 500-gal booster tank painted in the white-over-red color scheme. The “North Philly Cowboys” currently share their quarters with Ladder 12, Medic 22, and Battalion Chief 8.
