COMPANY HISTORY

Written by: Pat Turner

Pipeline 20 traces its origins to the Diligent Fire Company Number 10, one of the original volunteer fire companies in colonial Philadelphia. The Diligent Fire Company Number 10 was founded on July 4, 1791 and was located on the south side of Market Street near 8th Street. In 1800, they moved to Filbert Street between 8th and 9th Street, and moved yet again in 1811 to 9th Street south of Market Street. In 1861, they moved to new quarters located on the southwest corner of 10th and Filbert Streets and later became one of the original companies of the paid Philadelphia Fire Department on March 15, 1871. During the later part of the 19th Century, Pipeline 20 was housed at 911 Filbert Street and in a rented garage located at 20 North 10th Street, where they remained until June 5, 1956. When their new quarters were opened, Ladder 23 moved in with Pipeline 20 from their former quarters with Engine 17, located in then Fire Headquarters at 1328 Race Street. Pipeline 20 currently runs with a 1991 Seagrave 1000gpm pumper with a 500gal booster tank that’s painted in the traditional red color scheme of the Philadelphia Fire Department. Pipeline 20, Ladder 23, and Medic 1 proudly call themselves “The House of Dragons” as they continue to carry on the traditions of dedication and service as they protect the Philadelphians who call Chinatown their home.
