From England comes the information that the name Snelson was anciently known as Senelestune. It was a township parish in Rostherne County, Cheshire. The family that lived there were later called Snelson or Snelston. Still later, the local name and the surname dropped the âtâ altogether.
Another source produces an early record of East Cheshire listing William de Snelleston in 1367 and a Thomas de Snelleston in 1379, so we may assume that still another spelling was used. Later records show that Benedict Snelson of Little Budworth died in 1606. He was a yoeman. [A yoeman is a freeholder of a class below the gentry, who worked his own land] Since this early record of 1606, the name appears and remains, Snelson. [Leona Williams Smith, 1982]

Rostherne is a town in the county of Cheshire. Cheshire is primarily an agricultural area in the north of England. If you check on a map, the county is situated just south of Manchester - a large English city. Cheshire is also a very affluent area of England whose residents include the majority of Manchester and Liverpool's wealthier elements. It has the most millionaires per capita of any county in England and has some very nice, typically English, rolling countryside.
Eccleshall is a village in Staffordshire which is the county below and to the west of Cheshire. This means that Staffordshire is quite central in terms of landmass of the UK, but as it has a border with the country of Wales, it is one of the Western counties of England. Staffordshire is an agricultural area of England and has some beautiful towns and villages surrounded by open coutryside and moors.
The Eccleshall Parish Registers describe Larry as a bastard.

Nelson Thomas, aged 91 years, a Civil War Veteran and one of Greene County's most widely known citizens, died Thursday night November 9 at 10 o'clock at his home at Holbrook. One sister, Mrs. Sadie Church also survives. Funeral services conducted by Rev. D.R. Piper, Rogersville. were held from his late home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.
