Notes

William Jackson Tacy Sr.

He is Twin of Elizabeth L. Tacy buried in lower Tacy Clem on Becca Creek, Huttonsville, WV.

Info from Charles L. Leary (sources provided by Gail Tacy,Mill Creek/Huttonsville, WV) - Oliver had half brother Woodford Tacy and half sister Martha L. Rosencrance.

Randolph Bernard Tacy

Speculated by some family members to be buried at Clover Lick, Pocohontas County WV or near Bartow, WV. He was a Doctor.
Possible came through New Orleans from France.

Found on message board - Randolph B. Tacy (Tacey in census records in Virginia) was born in France, educated in England as a doctor. First written record is in Fluvanna County, Va where he married a Paulina J. Glass on Aug 31, 1826. They had ten children. Moved to Pocahontas County, now in WV and bought land. His daughter Poline had a son named George Norman Tacy which is my great grandfather and his son George Dallas Tacy was my grandfather who lived in Cass, WV. My father was Ollie J. Tacy of Cass. (The author of message was Judith Spear)

Info sent to Teresa Kisko from D. Jeanne Russell - Notes by Hubert Taylor.- Randolph Bernard Tacy was born in France of the parents of comfortable financial means. They must have survived the revolution of 1789 with their estate intact as they sent their son to Englan to be educated in the field of medicine. Tradition has it that his mother prepared a meal in such an unsanitary manner, that he flew into a fit of anger and threw a tea cup at her. The cup struck her on the head and she fell over. Immediately he left home and never returned to learn the result of his action. The "Tacy Temper" has been a noticeable trait in his descendants. He sailed the seas for seven years hoping to escape any arrest if his assault proved fatal. He practiced medicine while on the ships. The first written record of him in America is when he married in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He bought land there and all of his children were born in that county. Records in the Fluvanna courthouse show that Randolph Tacy married Paulina J. Glass on August 31, 1826. Randolph Tacey (note spelling) on August 29, 1832 bought of Mary C. and Jordan Spotswood 45 1/2 acres for $159. On August 30, 1851 Paulina J. and Randolph Tacy sold to John Humphery two tracts of land of 43 1/2 acres and 3 acres for $450. Randolph signed the deed and Paulina made her mark. This land was located 10 to 12 miles east of Palmyra toward Richmond. Today the area appears to be of poor quality for productive farming. Randolph Tacy was recorded as Bernard Tacy when his daughter, Ann Virginia, married in 1844. 1850 census of Virginia lists R.B. Tacy 63 years old, born in France. Wife Paulina, 44 years old. There is no birth record for Paulina Glass. She was not listed in any of the Glass wills and her parents remain unknown. There are many Glass families in Fluvanna County today. There was a blacksmith in the shop of the Cass Mill named Glass that was supposed to be related to Paulina Glass. This was about 1920. Charlie Tacy knew him. The blacksmith accidently had 3 fingers cut off. Tacy moved to Pocahontas County where the Court House records show that he bought 270 acres from Jacob and Sarah, John and Margaret Yeager on April 1, 1852. This land was a part of 30,000 acres held by Jacob Kuhn and by him conveyed to Jacob Scoope and his executors to the Yeagers. It joined the Phillips place. Today, it's known as the Murphy Place and is about 2 miles south of Bartow on Rt. 28. At one time, his farm was the only clearing between the Hevener acres and Bartow. He practiced medicine here. On one occasion he treated Moses Hughs, who lived near Greenbank for rheumatism. He put the patient in a big box-like hollowed out log and then gave him a steam herb soak. The box was kept at the Asbury Sheets place for many years. Asbury Sheets told of Dr. Tacy putting a keg of whiskey up in a tree to fool people from getting into it. When he got thirsty and needed a supply, he shot a hole in the keg and caught the whiskey in a wooden tub. Woodford Tacy said that this tale was published in the Pocahontas Times at one time and was told by John Doyle to the editor, Calvin W. Price. Charles Tacy had heard that Dr. Tacy swore that he had poisoned rattle snakes on his farm at Boyer. The wife of Dr. Tacy died sometime after 1859 and was buried beside state Rt. 28 on the farm. Charlie Tacy recalled seeing the rail fence around the Tacy Cemetery and looking at the two graves. Others have said there were three graves. No markers were ever erected and the site is unidentifiable now. March 1, 1859, Randolph B. Tacy and Pelina (note spelling) deeded to their son, James Tacy, 250 acres, "To have parcel of land and farming utensils now on the premises for his own use and benefit, nevertheless it is provile (probably provided) that said James Tacy shall well and truly provide, keep and support in a decent and comfortable (had been underlined in pencil) manner said R.B. Tacy and Pelina, his wife, on the premises with the necessary nursing and medicine with one horse and buggy for and during their natural lives and at their death a decent burial". Randolph Tacy had signed the deed and Pelina made her mark, witnesses by George Burner and William J. Woodell. James Tacy did not live to carry out the wishes of his parents. He died during the Civil War as will be noted later. The farm sold in 1882 by William L. McNeil, Administer of James Tacy, deceased, to Robert Kerr for 487 two parcels of land; 270 acres acquired from R.B. Tacy, 90 acres acquired from Oscar Butcher. As noted previously, Mrs. Tacy died and was buried of the farm. Later, Dr. Tacy went to live at Clover Lick with his son-in-law, William Doyle. Although his daughter, Lucy Ann, had married Doyle, Doyles second wife was Dr. Tacy's grandaughter. Woodford Tacy believes that the doctor is buried at Clover Lick. No record of his death is known. Tacy was an outspoken abolitionist. He made speeches concerning the necessity and morality of freeing the slaves. He had two sons that adhered to their Virginia birth and were confederate soldiers. The ten children of Randolph Tacy and Paulina J. Glass were: Anna, Virginia, Mary Eliza, John, Poline, William J., Elizabeth L., Lucy Ann, James randolph, Rebecca Jane, and Martha Jane. Written by Hubert Taylor of Greenbank, WV.

Civil War Veteran Passes Away at Age of 92 Years
Nelson Thomas, aged 91 years, a Civil War Veteran and one of Greene County's most widely known citizens, died Thursday night November 9 at 10 o'clock at his home at Holbrook. His death resulted from a stroke of apoplexy suffered the preceeding Sunday night and he never regained consciousness. Mr. Thomas served through the Rebellion as a member of Company A Fifth West Virginia Infantry and had spent practically all of his life in the Holbrook neighborhood. For many years he was a stock dealer and while following that business, he made a wide acquaintance in Southwestern Pennsylvania. For a man of his advanced age, Mr. Thomas was quite rugged in health, and often made the trip from his home to Waynesburg mostly on foot. He was a frequent visitor at the county capital and was in town only a few days before being stricken ill. He was a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Thomas was married three times, his first wife being Catherine Slusher, his second Catherine Trippett, and the third Carolyn Ankrom. All three are deceased. He is survived by the following children, Mrs. Elizabeth Daniels of Los Angelow, CA., Mrs. Harley Huffman and Patrick (should be Tapp) Thomas, both of Holbrook. One sister, Mrs. Sadie Church also survives. Funeral services conducted by Rev. D.R. Piper, Rogersville. were held from his late home Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment was at Nichell Cemetery at Holbrook.
