James Armstrong Snelson

1Correspondence from "Headstone Hunter" Deb Harper to Teresa Kisko. Deb Harper lives close to the Brick Cemetery, WV and was kind enough to find these tombstones for me (Teresa Kisko).

2Correspondence from Ray Bowden (non related), 4 Apr 2001, traybowden@hotmail.com. "Iam not related to the Snelson family, however I have a lot of reference material pertaining to Randolph County. I sent this info to John Snelson and I am forwarding a copy of the same to you. The following information was abstracted from Hu Maxwell's History of Randolph County, Randolph County Census Records, Marriage Records and Cemetery Records. James A. Snelson, born November 11, 1813, in Louisa County, Virginia a son of John and Jemima Armstrong Snelson married first in 1834 to Evalina T. Armstrong who died in 1861. James moved to Randolph County about 1840 and owned 634 acres near Huttonsville. James and Evalina had eight children: Louisa E., Fannie S., Henrette R., Martha T., James G., Mary S., Thomas P., and Sarah J. James married second November 8, 1866 in Randolph County to Catherine Channel, born July 11, 1830 a daughter of William and Elizabeth Ann Channel. James died December 4, 1878 and Catherine died May 11, 1899. Both were buried in the Brick Church Cemetery south of Huttonsville, WV. James and Catherine had four children: Elletha, Leonidas, Lois and French. Thomas Price Snelson, born 1849 in Randolph County, a son of James A. and Evalina Snelson married in 1872 to Minerva Wamsley, born October 26, 1848 a daughter of Joseph and Eliza Stalnaker Wamsley. Thomas died in 1904 and Minerva died January 27, 1943. Both were buried in the Hazelwood Cemetery about a mile north of Beverly, WV. The 1880 census for Randolph County shows Thomas P. and Minerva had two children: 1. Wilbert E. Snelson, age 5 (I believe this was your Earl or Early W - born July 1, 1874) 2. Lenoria B., age 3 1/2 - born February 1880 Note: They could have had more children. I did not check Census Records later than 1880. The Randolph County Marriage Records show that Early W. Snelson, age 23, married Ella Tacy, age 19, September 2, 1897. Based on this record Ella would have been 2 years in the 1880 census. There is no Ella Tacy listed in the 1880 census of Randolph County. There is a D. Elitha Tacy, age 2, daughter of Albert N. and Mary A. Tacy. I don't have any other proof, but I believe that the Ella Tacy that married Early W. (or Wilbert Earl) Snelson was actually Diana Elithat Tacy, daughter of Albert and Mary Ann Tacy and she was the same Diana Snelson who appears in the cemetery records in Mill Creek Cemetery. Albert Noah Tacy, born December 13, 1854 a son of William Jacob and Virginia R. Arbogast Tacy married September 30, 1875 in Randolph County to Mary Ann Hevener, born March 16, 1858 a daughter of Andrew and Diana Wamsley Hevener. Albert died February 2, 1897 and Mary Ann died May 30, 1928. Both were buried in the Tacy Cemetery. I don't have any information on any children other than those I have listed. My census records only include the 1880 census. I live in Randolph County and might be able to assist you with additional information. Hope this little bit of info helps. Good Luck in your search."
