Glossary

This page is to serve as a reference for beginners or those who are new to the online pokemon community and may not be familiar with the commonly-used terms and abbreviations. One or two terms have a standardized use here on the individual attack pages for Metalloid Research, but can be used in different ways elsewhere (namely Round, Turn, Full trapping and Partial trapping). It's expected that most of the people reading this are already familiar with these terms, so they are unlikely to find any value in what is on this page.

AP boost - The increase in stats that can sometimes be received from Ancientpower. AP is, of course, an abbreviation for Ancientpower.

Box Trick - A method usually used for level 100 pokemon, but can be used to increase the stats of lower-level pokemon as well. The method involves having an individual pokemon fight a large number of pokemon whose experience point value will be low enough to not cause the pokemon to level up (or when using a level 100 pokemon, any large number of pokemon). The pokemon used is then deposited in one of the PC storage boxes, then removed. When the pokemon is removed from the box, their stats are recalculated with all of the stat experience that was earned from the large number of fights being applied to the stats, resulting in an increase. Most often used on level 100 pokemon because these pokemon can no longer have their stats recalculated by gaining a level and they may not yet have accumulated the maximum possible stat experience through the fights needed to level up. Once a pokemon has gained maximum stat experience in a stat, the box trick will no longer increase that stat. The box trick will not allow a pokemon to exceed the maximum stat values set by their DVs/IVs/genes and the species base stat score, it is only a method to help achieve that maximum.

Bug power (also Ice power or (Type) power) - A shorthand used to note the type that Hidden Power actually manifests as, or is planned to be made to manifest as when presenting the moveset for a pokemon. This is also commonly written as HP Bug (or whatever the type is).

CH - Abbreviation for Critical Hit. In brief, the damage dealt when this happens is multipled by 2. Check the page for the full details.

Condition Monitor - See Status Monitor.

DT - Abbreviation for Double Team. It can be used in several ways, such as part of a moveset description, or describing actions in battle, like the reference of DTing up.

DVs/IVs/genes - Values ranging from 0 to 15. These values are set for each pokemon and determine the maximum possible value for a stat for the pokemon that it belongs to. These values combine with the base values of a stat for the pokemon's species, as well as the experience value that they have for that stat in order to detrmine the actual value for that stat. The DVs/IVs/genes are determined randomly for wild pokemon at the time that they appear. A pokemon that is created by breeding has their DVs/IVs/genes created according to certain rules when the pokemon is created by that method. The base DV/IV/gene values exist for the following stats: Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special. The Special DV/IV/gene is used for both the Special Attack and Special Defense stat as a result of the splitting of Special in GSC. The DV/IV/gene for HP is created from the ones for Attack, Defense, Speed, and Special.

Fixed Damage - An attack which ignores the damage formula when determining damage. The value may be a single value for the attack or it may be detremined by a single other value. Fixed damage attacks may never be a CH.

Flinch - An attack effect which causes a pokemon to lose a turn. If this happens as a result of the pokemon that attacks first during the round, the pokemon that would go second will not not perform a move/attack or get the chance to attack itself if it is currently Confused.

G/S/C - Abbreviation for Gold/Silver/Crystal. Also commonly abbreviated as GSC. A reference to anything commonly in all 3 of the second set of games such as "Mewtwo is now viewed as being less powerful in GSC, since Amnesia only boosts Special Defense now."

OHKO - Abbreviation for One Hit Knock Out. This refers to the 3 moves Fissure, Guillotine, and Horn Drill for their unique ability, when they hit, to take out any pokemon in one hit, regardless of the stats of either pokemon (except for level).

Life Drain - A term used for any move that damages an opponent then returns part or all of the damage to the pokemon that used that move.

Pseudo-Hazer - A term used for pokemon that utilize either Roar or Whirlwind. The term originates from the fact that pokemon utilizing these moves can perform essentially the same function as a pokemon with the move Haze, but without being limited to the weaknesses of the small number of pokemon that can learn Haze.

R/B/Y - Abbreviation for Red/Blue/Yellow. Also commonly abbreviated as RBY. A reference in to anything in all 3 of the original set of games such as "Psychics dominated in RBY since they had no type weaknesses and a high Special stat."

Recoil - A term used for any move that causes damage to the user which is proportional to the amount of damage to be dealt to the targetted pokemon.

Recovery - A term used to describe any move that restores HP without inflicting damage on an opposing pokemon.

Round - The full combat sequence that occurs between the times that players select moves for their pokemon.

STAB - Abbreviation for Same Type Attack Bonus. This is an increase in damage for attacks that cause damage where the type of the attack is the same as one of the type(s) of the pokemon using the attack. The bonus is 50%, so the damage of an attack with STAB would be 150% of a pokemon with identical stats, but didn't have a matching type. This bonus is not the same as the bonus given by Type-boosting items.

Stats - Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, Special Defense, Accuracy, and Evade is the common combat grouping due to how they are affected in combat and by certain moves. However, HP and Level are also individual stats and vary among different pokemon. The Accuracy and Evade stats aren't included when giving stat listings for individual pokemon because the values are the same for every pokemon unless it is modified by an item or move.

Status - The states that an individual pokemon is in at any given time which affect their performance and have an abbreviation on the Status Monitor. These include Burned, Fainted, Frozen, Paralyzed, Poisoned, and Sleeping. Confused is also considered among these states depsite the fact that it doesn't appear on the Status Monitor because it can be affected by some moves that work only on the Status of a pokemon.

Status Monitor - Three letters below a pokemon's name in the battle display which show the Status of a pokemon.

Trapping - The use of a move that prevents an opposing pokemon from being switched out of battle when the controlling player might want to do so (however, the use of Baton Pass by a trapped pokemon will allow switching to another pokemon, but the one that is switched in will in turn be trapped). There are two forms of trapping, based on the move that performs the action: Full trapping and Partial trapping. Full trapping moves will keep the opposing pokemon from switching for as long as the using pokemon is neither fainted nor switched out. Partial trapping ends when the using pokemon is fainted or switched out, but it also ends after a certain number of turns that is determined when the opposing pokemon is trapped.

Trap-Song (also trap-songer) - A combat strategy based on the use of Perish Song with Trapping (usually Full trapping). This strategy has the using pokemon (a trap-songer) switch out on the round in which both pokemon would faint from Perish Song's effect. Since the trapping effect doesn't end until after the using pokemon has left play, the opposing pokemon is held in for the round in which the effect occurs and is therefore fainted. The using pokemon gets away and can later attempt to repeat the strategy on another pokemon.

Turn - The time during a round when an individual pokemon performs a move/attack.
