Swerves Ahead

Chapta' 5

Well, that answered that question, Evan thought, as he held Nicole's hand after thier kiss. Evan Harley strikes again. Now, what does he say? Does he spill the beans and tell her about his entire obsession with her before they met or does that become a lost subject? And if he did, say one day, actually tell her about that whole extraganza, how would she respond? Evan wasn't going to let his mind wander at a moment such as this. He was holding her hand and she was smiling up at him.
"I feel so stupid." he remarked. Nicole let out a laugh and looked at him. She probably felt the same way. There the two of them were, directly after a potentionally catastrophic argument, making out in school. Who knew Evan had the guts in him even to kiss back? It took him at least 5 weeks to kiss Rebecca for the first time but Nicole didn't scare him. He was feeling really strange right now.
"Yeah." Nicole responded, Jenna walking in. She circled the two of us, eyeing our held hands and smiling faces with an odd, ominous expression.
"Okay, now I think your both just weird." Jenna exclaimed. Hector came down the steps, lolly pop in his mouth and grinned at Jenna. Jenna just stood, hand on hip, completly bewildered.
"How do you do it?" Jenna whispered to Nicole. Nicole, I could tell, was alittle confused by the question. Jenna pulled Nicole away to ask her something while Evan checked his watch. Only 15 minutes and 12 seconds left to gaze at his new girlfriend. Was she his girlfriend? Evan felt a scoff coming on. How could she not be? She kissed him, didn't she? Or maybe she did it so he would shut up. Either way, the sensation still hadn't left his lips and he was still light-headed. And Evan couldn't get over the fact that it just felt so good.
"She kiss you like lovers do, eh, buddy?" Hector said with a persistant nudge. Evan looked up at the highschool wannabe. How old was this guy? He looked like he should be in college by now, he thought to himself. Evan wouldn't have been surprised that he should be either. The guy didn't appear to be too bright or right in the head.
"Uh, yeah." Evan replied, hesitantly. Jenna and Nicole were still talking to each other by the pylons alongside the doors leading outside. Evan felt rightly treated finally, realizing that his Utopian beauty actually liked him back. Liked him, the freak of nature Harley. No, love hadn't treated him to well in the past but he knew this was all one huge payback. This was the way it was supposed to be.
"Evie!" he heard someone call him. Shannon. He looked around and tried finding somewhere to sneak off to. He had just retrieved Nicole back and now Shannon has returned to destroy it all again. He must end it all now. As she came around the corner, Evan put on his best punk face.
"Shannon..." he breathed heavily. Evan especially thought the breathing gave him a real mean outlook to others. She came over and draped her arms around his shoulders. Evan felt his tough guy resolve suddenly start to melt again. This proved only one thing. Evan was a dope for the ladies, as Micah so passionatly calls them.
"Evan?" Nicole called out to him. Shannon averted her attention towards him and looked shocked at Nicole. This wasn't good. Shannon smiled.
"Are you Evie's girl?" Evan could tell Nicole was aghast at this comment. For the fact someone actually linked her to him or the fact Shannon had the guts to still be touching him as she said it, he couldn't tell. Something inside his gut told him it was the second one. More footsteps came down the stairs and a familar voice called Shannon's name. "Oh, hey man. Shannon, the bell rang, chica." Evan couldn't believe the strange twist of irony to this moment. It was Micah and now Shannon was holding his hand.
"This is her, man! This is that chick." Micah mouthed to him. Evan had to give a tiny nod to stop his head from falling off. How weird was this? Micah waved goodbye as Nicole placed her hands into Evan's with a gigantic smile.
"Okay. I believe you." Nicole said and started laughing. Evan wanted to know what she was laughing about but didn't particularly need to ask. This whole day had been weird. Girls bathroom adventures, ex-girlfriends from Malibu and kisses after arguments. Evan was definatly falling in love with this girl more than he thought he would.

Evan was such a ham, Nicole thought to herself as he walked her to her next class. For the first time in awhile, people were staring at her for a completly different reason. But what they saw was just her and this guy walking side by side to thier class. They didn't see the way Evan smiled at her and they didn't feel Nicole's heart beat when he did so. Jenna starlted the two of them by tackling Evan from behind. Nicole was glad to see Jenna getting along with Evan. She practically disowned Nicole for her last two boyfriends, who both verbally just dissed Jenna constantly. Come to think of it, Nicole disowned them to.
"So, you guys have any classes together?" Jenna asked. Evan stared down at his feet when he talked but still smiled. Ever since the skating rink, Evan did seem shy. She just wished he didn't feel so uncomfortable around her.
"No. Not until next semester, I think." Nicole replied, clutching her books tighter to her body. She wished he would wrap his arm around her as they walked. She wished he would offer to carry her books. She wished she could be sure they were both in the same dimension.
"Okay, well this is my stop. See you after school, homeys." Jenna said and skipped into her classroom. Nicole turned to him and forced out a smile.
"Where's your class?" she asked him. Evan gave a snicker and pointed far off into the distance. Thats when Nicole realized his class wasn't anywhere near where they were.
"Your kidding!? Evan..." she responded, trying to sound disapointed. He took her and hugged her.
"If walking with you costs me a detention, then its worth it." he told her. Nicole felt relieved. He was so mysterious, Nicole thought, she could never tell what he was about to do or say. He leaned in and kissed her cheek.
"Go! You'll be late!" Nicole begged Evan, shoving him gently away. He smiled and tip-toed away. Again, she told him to get going. With a turn, Evan was once more out of her sight.
"Ms. Rosenthal?" the teacher said, her fingers gripping the shiny metal handle. Nicole looked to see if she could get another glimpse of him before she had to enter the room but he was gone. Quickly, she dropped into her seat and smacked her books upon the table, like usual.
"Excuse me, Ms. Rosenthal, but I cannot have you disrupting class. Thats the third time I've had to warn you. Come up here." Mrs. Giovanni, her mathematics teacher, called to her. Nicole couldn't believe it. Her getting detention? After grabbing the slip and sitting back down, she read over her crime.
Disrespectful Attitude and Disrupting Class.
Wonderful. Good Old Dad will find this amusing at least. The class took forever but it gave Nicole plenty of time to write a note to Evan.
To Evan-
I got my first detention today! For, um, disrespectful attitude and disrupting class. How you like that? All I did was slam some books. Nothing I don't normally do. But, ah well. You make it to class finally? Your so bad Evan, I can't believe you. But hey, that was really sweet. You can do it again if you'd like. Anyway, heres some basic info on me.

Well, thats it for now. Would you do me the honor of giving me some info? I feel alittle dumb not knowing your fave color. Hope the teachers treat ya fairly and see ya later.
-Nicole

Nicole had to smile after writing Evan. She had someone to think about instead of all the horrible things going on in the world and inside her home once again. The relief was mind lulling. Five seconds later the bell went off. She took the note, placed it in her purse and made her way out the door. Soon, she'd be able to hand it to him. Er, after detention.

Another detention, Evan thought to himself as he stared down at the tiny pink slip. It was two minutes til he had to make it to Home Ec. and he was bumming majorly. This had to be only something that would happen to him. Sure, he knew he was late to class, but this teacher never gave him a detention. Mr. Faurney was like, his idol. This, Evan suddenly realized, is why highschoolers can't trust teachers. But, ah well. He grabbed his usual seat in Mrs. Harmon's Home Ec. class, way in the back, and started scribbling out a little poem to Nicole.

Eyes that sparkle
twinkling so bright
touching my heart
and everything in sight
your arms they open
to my body they grasp
if my mouth could utter
one question they'd ask
why have you chose me
a boy so strange
your words console me
a soul you will change
and if I could say
these three words so true
I'd repeat them over
I know that I love you...I think

Wait, thats more like five words, isn't it? Evan went to erase it when a sudden and horrifying screech filled the air sharply. It seems Mrs. Harmon forgot to take her Midol again today. Evan quickly hid the scrap piece of paper in his Minnesota History book and looked attentively up at his female oppressor.
"Mr. Harley, are you paying attention?" she asked. Evan smiled at her and tried to sound convincing as he replied with an affirmative 'yes'. What was it with the teachers today? Did they all have it in for him or what? She seemed to buy his fib and went back to her pillow sewing example. The girls next to him were staring at him and he knew it. Slightly, he turned his head. They were staring and without shame. What was thier problem? Five minutes later, they were put into groups to finish their pillows. Evan had picked out a frog, considering about 2 months ago when he picked it, he thought he was one. One a girl would have to be pretty drugged up to kiss.
"Evan, can we ask you a question?" Jessica, one of his favorite Home Ec. classmates, asked. Being the only guy, Jessica seemed to be the single one person who thought he wasn't gay. Evan knew girls would think he was weird for being in such a girley class like Home Ec., but he didn't sign up for it at the beggining of the year. Apparently, he didn't make the right friends on the classroom assignment board.
"Go ahead." Evan replied. Jessica was one of the typical sport thugs, someone you didn't mess with or with her clan. Deep down, he sort of felt safe having a friend like her on his side.
"How did you become so romantic?" The other girls around him stared with questionable faces. Him? Romantic? When did this suddenly happen and where was this vicious rumor coming from? Evan had been linked to a few other distasteful labels before but romantic had never even come close.
"What?" Evan was compelled to ask. Jessica sorta scoffed and grabbed his arm. Her grip was pretty strong. Evan felt weak next to a girl who had the power to pop his head with her index finger and her thumb. Suddenly, things began to smear around him. He pulled his arm away and laughed, to make him not look like a weiny.
"The girls bathroom? That was you right? Come on, Evan, your cover is so blown." Evan wanted to know what cover. He wasn't fronting anything, all he wanted was to get Nicole back, not look like a sonnet spewing romantic geek. That was when the bell went off.
"Umm, see ya next B-day." Evan mumbled. Jessica and the other girls giggled.
"He is so hot. I wish I was Nicole." Patricia, Jessica's good friend, confessed. Jessica smacked her and snarled.
"You sound like an idiot." Jessica said, impolitely. Evan needed out of there. The P.A. voice over reminded everyone to go home and send in the money for their school fundraiser but all Evan could remind himself was that his locker was on the other side of the school and every girl that passed him would now probably be staring. He didn't do it to be romantic. And to think all this time he thought the girls would think he was a bigger freak than he already was. This, Evan realized, was so much worse.

School was over and any chance of seeing Evan later was now practically cancelled due to her dumb detention. At least now, on the upside, she didn't have her partially concious father to drudge home to. Tears, at that moment, wanted to well up and drip down her face but Jenna was coming towards her in the hallway. Letting Jenna know Nicole's true pain would totally blow up in her face. At least, thats what she thought.
"Everyone's talking about it." she exclaimed. Nicole's mind wandered. Talking about what? Evan's escapade with his ex-girlfriend or thier amazing make-up?
"Talking..." Nicole replied, attacking her locker. The darn thing never opened for her at all sometimes and when it did, it just makes her mirror come crashing to the floor.
"About how romantic Evan is. It's all over school how he got you back in the girls room. Every girl wants Evan for themselves. Not me personally, cause I've got my wonderful Hecty-poo, but ya know..." she giggled after saying Hector's new nickname. Last week, it was Hector-meister. And whats up with everyone talking about Evan like that? She finally gets the guy she's been waiting for and she finds out theres a waiting list? Nicole just had to chuckle at the thought though. One day he's the school troglodyte (no offense) and then the next, he's a casanova. The poor thing, she thought.
"Evan's gotta be freaking out." Nicole responded. Finally, after smacking her locker a bit more, it opens and down comes the mirror. It was to be expected to a degree though, so she bends down and grabs it without a thought.
"Well, I already have his locker number with me here so if you wanna catch him before you head to juvie, you better get running." Nicole was utterly lost. How'd she get his locker number? Nevermind, she realized, Jenna was Jenna. She probably had Hector beat up someone to get it. It figured, though.
"It's detention, not juvie. And thanks. See ya later. Burger King, right?" Nicole quickly replied. Jenna gave her the paper with the number on it and smiled.
"And invite Evan. I'm sure he'd love to come along." Jenna responded. Nicole chuckled. She'd only been fantasizing about that kiss in the study hall below the cafeteria since 12:34, three minutes after it happened. And now she could have him all to herself. Why wouldn't she indulge in inviting her new James Dean? "Of course I'm gonna invite him. He is my boyfriend." Jenna scooted her off and into the cluttered hall, she made her way to Evan's locker. She only wished he was there.

I hope to get Chapter 6 underway any time now. Thanks for reading this chapter though and have a good day. Remember to smile, you goofs! Love,
Heather
