Say It Isn't So - A Dark Angel Fanfic

“Another tough night,” Max mumbled, removing her boots, “I saved an old lady from being over-paid at the market again.” Logan sits back, his head slightly motioned towards the window, “What did you have in mind to do tonight??” he asked. She sighs, “I don’t know. I was hoping something would find me.” Logan nods and wheels himself over to his coffe table and picks up a magazine. “Do you wanna stay here? Watch a movie?” he asks. Her eyes close, “Theres something just not right tonight. I can feel it,” she murmurs then stands back up. At that moment, the door opens revealling Alec with a magazine in his right hand, “Hey.” he says to each of them. “Don’t you ever knock??” Logan asks. “Did I interrupt something?” he replies, his hands in the air. Logan stutters, “No, but-” Alec moves towards the window and looks down, “Good. I needed to talk to Max for a second. I knew she’d be here,” he starts, then turns to Max, “...you usually are.” he finishes then slams the magazine down on the table. “Did you see that?” he asks. Max turns to it and picks the crumpled paper up. “Oh my gosh, thats Joshua.” she breathes. “So much for hidin’ him, huh??” Max hits him, “Shut up.” she says. Impassively, he walks back towards the door then stops, turns around and says, “Aren’t you coming Max?” he asks. Logan looks up at her. Max moans and shoves her feet back into her shoes. “If this is a joke, you better make it funny.” Alec grins for a second. “Okay.” he says then walks out the door. “Logan, I hope we can see a movie some other time.” she says. Logan slightly nods his head, “Sure.” Max smiles and heads out the door.

Alec is leaning against the outside door with a blank stare to his feet. “Ready?” Max asks, pulling on her jacket. He nods and heads to the elevator, Max by his side. “I knew this would happen. Dang it...” she mumbles. “We just better get back there before someone else, thats all I gotta say.” he replies. The elevator opens as they both enter. Max breathes deeply and looks at Alec, who is oblivious to her stares. “I’m not always at Logans, ya know. I have a life.” Alec smiles, “I know. You tell me all the time.” Max repositions her stance and waits for the doors to open. But they never do. “Oh heck, how’d I know something like this would happen?” she says. Alec sits down on the floor and looks up at her. “They’ll have it working soon. Lets just wait it out.” he replies. Max looks down at him, her lips pursed together, “Oh my gosh...you did this.” she says. Alec is obviously blown away. “Are you kidding me? You think I want anything to happen to Joshua??” he asks. “You suck at lying Alec.” Alec is getting angrier now, “You are so dillusional, Max. It’s freakin’ pathetic.” he says. Max looks away for a second then up at the lights glowing above them. “So, you didn’t do this?” she asks. “No!!” he yells. “Then help me open this shaft.” she replies. “You can open it yourself.” he says. “Fine, but I’m sealing it when I get up top.” Alec chuckles, “I can open that.” he says. “Oh yeah? Show me.” she replies. “Fine, I will then.” Alec stands up and punches the vent away, “Told you I could do it.” Max grins and hoists herself up, “Oh I knew you could, I just didn’t want to mess up the new nail job I got yesterday.” she tells him. Alec scoffs, “Girls.” he says. “They were $50!” she replies, shouting at him from above. Alec jumps up and catches himself by the elevator’s metal cords. “If we climb down the sides, we can get to the bottom quicker.” Max says. Just then, Alec grabs her. “No, lets try this.” Before she has any time to object, Alec has grabbed the metal cords and rode them down the bottom. The leather on his hand gloves are worn down close to the skin but they make it down quietly. When they had reached the very bottom, Max smacks Alec in his arm. He stays complacent and busts the doors open. “Honey, we’re home!” he shouts. “Shut up, Alec.” she mumbles. “Hello!!” he continues to yell. Max grabs his arm and drags him behind a pile of old cardboard boxes. “Have I told you how much I wanna kill you latly?” Alec is obviously amused. “Nope.” he replies. Just then, a man holding a revolver pops out behind the boxes. Max hits Alec and smiles at the man. “Please sir, he only has a few days left to live and our parents don’t let us see each other. Couldn’t you let us stay here?” Max begs, pouting at the man. The man grins and nods his head, “Have at it, kiddos.” he says. Max smiles. Alec is enthralled with how Max handled it. After the man had left, Max hits Alec again. “I gonna hurt you!!” she yells. “Sorry, I thought places like these were abandoned.” he says. “Hello my name is Max and I’ll be introducing you to Earth. Will this be a permanent or temporary visit?” Alec stands up, “We need to go.” he says. Max moans and heads in front of him. “My last days to live? Nice touch. Your definatly a better lier that I am.” he remarks. Max turns around with a confused look on her face, “Who said I was lying?” Alec is taken aback for a second then chuckles to himself.

Meanwhile at Logans, Bling has just left for a date leaving Logan all alone in his bedroom watching sports. “Oh right...get him, you idiot...yeah!! Score!!” he shouts, talking to himself. But he suddenly realizes there is no one to cheer with and stops. The doorbell to his apartment rings. Logan is bewildered since he had not been expecting anybody and gets back into his chair as fast as he can. Wheeling over to it, he’s surprised to see Joshua run in after he had opened the door. “Where’s Max?” he asks. Logan is taken aback. “Um, she left with Alec about 30 minutes ago. I saw the picture. Are you in trouble?” he asks. Joshua is pacing back and forth scratching his neck, “No! She can’t be with Alec! Alec is bad, he will do something to her tonight.” he says. Logan is evidently worried now, “How do you know this? What is he going to do??” he asks. Joshua stops and looks at Logan, “They’ve been matched. Didn’t you know? Their paired together. By Manticore.” Logan is still in shock, “Paired? You mean-?” Josh looks at him, “Mating partners. It in thier blood.” he tells Logan. Before long, Logan has gathered his coat and is out the door. “Do you know where they are, Logan?” Joshua asks. “Not really, but I have an idea.” he says. They both head to the elevator but it is still stuck where Alec and Max had left it. “This is not good. Max is in trouble. I know it.” Joshua says. Logan is now in a tough position. “Joshua, do you see those stairs?” Logan asks, pointing to his left at the emergency exit doors. “Yes, Joshua sees it.” he replies. “Well, I gonna need your help.” Joshua nods.

At that time, Alec and Max have finally reached the stairs upward to the first floor. “Every time I’m with you, I’m always tired out.” she says, taking step by step up the stairs. “I have that effect.” he says. Max turns to him and scoffs, “That is so male I won’t even bother with a response. It gives you too much credit.” she says. Alec grins and bolts ahead of her, stopping in front. “I could carry you.” he says. “I could break your neck. Your choice.” she replies. She pushes him away and continues upward. “How do we even know if Joshua will still be where you hid him?” he asks. “I don’t but when thats the only lead you got, you take it.” she remarks. “Yeah, but we’ve been trained to dust our tracks. If Joshua was there, he wouldn’t leave a sign of where he went.” he replies. “That could be true if Joshua had gotten the same training we did.” Max says, reaching for the door. Alec opens it for her and lets her through, “Here.” he remarks. “Thanks.” she replies.

“I really appreciate this.” Logan says, as Joshua carries him in one arm and his wheelchair in the other. “Glad I could help.” Thinking fast, Logan rips off the baseball cap he had been wearing watching sports and puts it on Joshuas head. “Put your hair in front of your face and don’t look up when we reach the bottom, okay?” Logan says. “Okay...Logan, will Max be okay?” Logan is reminded how worried he really is and sighs, “Yeah, Joshua. She’ll be fine.” Joshua smiles to himself, “Logan, you’d never let anything happen to Max. Thats why I like you.” Logan grins, still unsure about the situation. “I do what I can, Joshua.” he replies. They reach the main floor and Joshua fixes his hair toward his hair. After setting Logan in his wheelchair, they walk out. Missing Alec and Max by only a few minutes, they head for the car park on the side of the apartment building. After crawling into the drivers side and tossing his wheelchair in the back, Joshua and Logan head off into the direction of where they think they may be. “How did you know about Max and Alec?” Logan asks. They reach a stop sign. Joshua looks around, curiously. “What is this?” he asks. Logan looks at him, “This is a car. Haven’t you been in a car before?” he remarks. Joshua shakes his head no. “Oh.” Logan replies. Joshua goes ‘ohh...’ and turns to Logan. “You asked me a question, didn’t you Logan?” he says. “Yeah, how did you know about Alec and Max being paired?” he asks. “Every X-5 is. They had a list. I read it.” he says. “How do you know that he’ll do something tonight though?” Logan asks. “Alec turns 21 tonight. Thats when he, well...ya know.” Logan accelerates the car a bit, “Yeah...” Logan mumbles. “I know.”

Meanwhile, Alec and Max have made it halfway to where she has her motorcycle parked. “Where is it anyway?” Alec asks. “My motorcycle?” she replies. “No, where Joshua was hidden.” Max thinks for a second, “A deserted apartment building downtown.” He nods and looks behind him, “The sooner we get off the street the better. I don’t like walking around. Its to risky.” he says. “Your telling me. Oh! There it is.” she says and walks behind a garbage can. “You chain your bike to a garbage can?” he says. “Its safer. Here,” she says, tossing him a helmet and he scoffs, “What?” He looks at her, “A helmet? I don’t think this will be necessary.” he says. “Don’t be stupid. If a policeman pull us over and we get called to the station, our names will be put on a list. A list any one of those people after us can read. Now unless you wanna run alongside me the whole time, I suggest you put it on and shut up.” His eyes widen and he obediently puts it on. “How do you breathe?” he asks. “Get on.” she says, jumping in front. “Okay!” he says, and chuckles to himself.

Two men emerge from behind a tall brick building alongside where Alec and Max have just left. “Subjects found, sir.” one of them says, talking into a yellow walkie talkie. “Good. Follow them. I want to know everything they do. Report back to me in 20 minutes.” Mr. White says. “Yes, sir.” he says. As they walk across the road, Logan nearly runs them over. The men give Logan and Joshua a suspicious look. Logan shouts ‘sorry’ and waits for his light to turn green. “Are you okay, Logan?” Joshua asks. “Yes...no...I don’t know.” he replies. “Father use to tell me that when someone loves the other one, they worry all the time for them. Do you love Max, Logan?” he asks. Logan is quiet and looks at Joshua, undeciding. “Did you see that guy in the passenger seat?” one of the men says to the other. “Hideous beyond all reason.” the other says. “There was something about the other guy thats familiar though.” The other scoffs, “Give it up Pete. Your just seeing stuff again.” he says. “Yeah, maybe.” They walk off to thier car and jump in and head after Alec and Max.

Alec has his hands wrapped tightly against to Max’s stomach and is grinning at her behind her back. “You smell nice. What is that? Au de Logan’e?” he jokes. “I believe the words shut and up ring a bell right about now.” she replies. “C’mon. What’s the deal with you two?” he asks. “I’m not gonna discuss my love life with you.” Alec’s eyebrows raise, “So it is love.” he says. She looks to her side and skids into a dark and empty alley. Alec is flown off the bike and knocked against the side of the wall. “Dang, shoot me for asking.” he moans. “What’s it to you anyway? Is mine and Logans love life thrilling to you or something? Thats sick, no, that’s beyond sick. It’s pathetic.” she tells him. He stands up and fixes his hair. “I’m sorry...I won’t mention it anymore.” he says, ticked off. “Good cause skidding like that ruins my tires.” she says. He gets back on and waits for Max to start going again. “Hey, c’mon. Why aren’t you going?” he asks. The two men in thier car had noticed Alec and her already tho. She’s quiet for a second and heads in the opposite direction to the other side of the street. “Max, what is it?” he asks, his face close to hers. “Trailers. We’re being followed.” The car screetches to a stop, causing a small accident behind them. One of the men get out, holding a huge gun in one hand. “Max, they don’t have a car!” Alec says. “Is that a gun?” she asks, looking in her rear view mirror. They turn the corner. Alec feels sorta dumb now but hides it well. “Where are we gonna go?” he asks. “We need to hide.” she says. “Hide.” he replies. “Yeah, as in conceal our whereabouts. We’re you dropped on your head as a child?” Alec growls. “Very funny.” he remarks. She laughs and speeds down the sidewalk til there is an open in the road. “Scared?” she asks. He obviously is but says, “No. I drive like this all the time.” She grins, “Right....” He looks at her, captivated and pulls aside a few strands of her hair away from her neck. Max says nothing ands acts like she hadn’t felt it but actually has. “Wh-where do you wanna go, Alec?” she asks. “I don’t care.” he says. “Thats a good place. Is that in New York?” she replies. “Huh?” he asks, still staring at her body. “Alec, are you even listening to me?” she asks. “Yes, of course.” he says, trying to get ahold of himself. “Sorry.” he finishes.
