"The Last Lap"
By:  Brian J. Voss

The last lap at Daytona
One more mile to go.
The man in the 3 car
He's putting on a show.
Fans on their feet whistle and cheer
Cause Dale's in 3rd place, blocking the rear.
In the blink of an eye
Fate claims a life.
His car slams the wall,
And a great legend falls.
Now we mourn, and now we cry
For the great intimidator, has left us behind.
We don't understand, we don't know why
But the pain in our hearts, it does not lie.
Farewell old friend, but no goodbyes.
We'll see you again at that track in the sky.
You were loved like a brother, or a father to others.
Gone, but not forgotten,
Your memory lives on.
In the hearts and souls and minds of us all
You were rough on the edge, but a heart of pure gold.
Your stories and memories will be shared and told.
So long Dale Earnhardt, you were admired by all
But the last lap is over, and our hearts have stalled.
Time won't stand still, so please GOD ease our pain,
As our tears they pour down like the rain.
A hero you were in all of our eyes, and heroes are legends that never die.

Remembering...

Sunday September 18 2001,started out as an ordinary day...
The race of the year Daytona 500 was on it's way.
As we gathered around to watch and to pray...
Dale Sr. would get #8 victory, he wanted so much, he'd achieve on this day.
As the race went on with excitement and fear...
It seemed as if a victory was near.
Waltrip was driving the car in the lead...
With Little E behind him a victory indeed.
The father within Dale Sr. was seen by us all...
As he held off the other drivers, wanting to overtake them all.
While protecting his son and friend on the track...
We seen our worst nightmare unfold for the Man In Black.
Waltrip went on to win the big race...
As Dale Jr. came in at second place.
Not knowing that behind them, the man they both loved...
Was taken from them to cross the finish line above.
The victory was short lived for Waltrip that day...
For his boss, his friend was taken in such a tragic way.
As the news of the tragedy was heard and was read...
So many hearts were broken, so many tears were shed.
As we sat around and could do nothing but cry...
The question so many pondered and asked was WHY?
Tho' God makes no mistakes, he always has a plan...
Why did he have to take such a well admired man?
The pain and the questions continue to go through our minds...
But the comfort is in knowing Dale crossed that final finish line.
The way we feel now, so overcome with pain...
Within our hearts will always remain.
But may we find comfort in knowing, that even though Dale is gone...
     In our hearts...

#3 will always Live On!!!!
