Bountiful BUTTERFLIES

Ms. Klauder's ultimate resource for early elementary teachers who LOVE to teach about the life cycle of butterflies!

Children in the early elementary grades are full of life and energy when it comes to learning and discovering about the world. In order to keep them captivated and motivated, we must provide them with outlets for discovery and inquiry, chances to be explorers and scientists, and the tools to become life long learners.

This school year my first graders at CES 126 in the Bronx worked on a project that not only was science based but also had language arts, math, social studies and art components. Our school is very standards based and it is really important to incorporate them into every project. A project on butterflies has every potential to do just that.

Our whole project started with our language arts program provided by Houghton Mifflin. Our theme for the month was creepy crawlies and one of the books we read was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (buy it here if your curriculum is not Houghton Mifflin). There's more information about Houghton Mifflin and their great curriculum called INVITATIONS TO LITERACY.

After you read this book with your students, there are many different activities you can participate in to continue the unit. The following are great links that I highly recommend checking out. I have provided other books, ideas for trips, and places to find other lesson plans. I guarantee that your students will love working with and learning about butterflies, so check these out!!
