Scrimmage vs Bishop McDevitt.........
A WIN FOR THE VARSITY TEAM!! from what I heard, it was a good game, complete with a double play!!
Game #1 Vs. Cedar Cliff........10-9Loss
Judging by the info given to me by several players and coach Swab himself, this was a very good game. to know that our varsity can overcome a season like last year and come into a new season fighting hard and hanging tough thruout the whole game makes me feel better about what lies ahead. I'm thinking Perry County Tournament. Based on this performance alone, I'm predicting 2nd place, and possibly winning the tournament this year. I know our players are hard-headed and dedicated, and I would love for them to make a complete recovery from the disasterous 2000 season!
Game # 2 vs. Hershey.............12-4 Loss
I didn't get many details on this game other than the weather was terribly cold and windy, and Hershey scored 8 of their 12 runs in the first inning. I'll attempt to get more details.,br>
Game #3 vs. CD East.............Loss
Game #4 vs. Susquehanna Township.......Loss
Game #5 vs. Waynesboro..........................Loss
Game #6 vs. Big Spring..............5-4 Loss
I've heard the story of this heartbreaking loss from a few players and coach Swab himself. WE WERE IN IT!! It took until the last half of the 7th inning for the other team to hit a solo homerun to win the game. That just goes to show we weren't the big joke that everyone thought we were. Big Spring thinks they can just come in and crush us, whether its JV or varsity. This made them see it took a lot of fighting for them to pull off a win. Next time they won't be so lucky. I personally have a huge problem with Big Spring after the 40-1 beating of our JV team last season. Had the JV's played Big Spring today, well, we already decided the night before at practice that we would win, because there is no other option when facing Big Spring. All I can say is that their JV team got lucky since our game was cancelled.
Game 7 vs. Cumberland Valley..................8-1 LOSS
The varsity just couldn't put together the hits they needed to pull this one off. Callista Costopoulos had a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the 7th to break the shut out. Having had Callista play a few games on the JV team earlier this season, I can say she has great potential to help the varsity team get to where they need to be for the rest of the season.
Game 8 vs Harrisburg............................11-5 VICTORY
Its been a long, long wait (25 games to be exact) but the varsity finally got their win!! I've heard conflicting reports on the actual score but it doesn't matter, it was a clean sweep for the softball teams today, and for once we all know what its like to be victorious!! Hopefully this shot of confidence will help elevate the varsity's spirit and propel them into a wild winning streak!!
PERRY COUNTY TOURNAMENT game #1 vs. Newport.............WIN!!!!!
I got to see the varsity team up close and personal today, as I was appointed to coach 3rd base for them today. We had some surprising players in surprising positions, but it all worked out ok. JV captain Ashley Hoffman was playing in right field, and there was a Sweeney behind the plate....no big deal except Sweeney never caught in a game before!! She did an amazing job behind the plate, gunned down a few runners and had an excellent tag out at home!! Mandy's pitching was good, the Newport batters had trouble getting hits in the later innings. Offensively we looked pretty pathetic in the beginning innings, but once we got on base, we played smart and took advantage of everything. Anna Rodgers' homerun helped also. Anyone who visits this page regularly knows that i had already predicted a 2nd place finish for the tournament. I know what the varsity is capable of, I just wish they had the confidence to believe it themselves.
PERRY COUNTY TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME vs. Greenwood....LOSS...
Our varsity team was pumped and ready to go for the championship game...coach Lucas agreed to let the players shave her head if they could bring home the trophy!! We had major offensive problems thru 3 innings, we were swinging at high balls!! At one point it looked as though we would be 10-runned in the Perry county tournament...how embarrassing that would be. Thankfully we rallied back and scored some runs to stay alive. We even scored in the 7th inning, so that goes to show we didn't roll over and die!! Mandy started on the mound this game also, but after having just pitched a stressful 7 innings just a half hour before, she needed a break, so Anna Rodgers came in to throw her smoke....greenwood had the ability to put the ball in the holes, and thats how they scored the runs they needed.
Overall coach Lucas and I were thrilled to see the team pull together and act like a team...i think the varsity is doing great, having won 2 games out of the past three....in two days!! There is hope after all!!!
Ok, needless to say I fell a little behind on the scores and games, I knew it would happen. The Varsity season ended with an overall record of 2 wins and 18 losses. The team had internal struggles toward the end, all of which worked against the players. Next season we can only improve more.
Booster Club Awards were presented by Coach Swab, Coach Lucas and myself on Thursday, May 31.
