My Obsession with The Rolling Stones

When did it start? I would have to say in the mid-eighties, I became aware of the music of the Stones. I regret the fact that I didn't go see them on tour in 1989. But I made up for lost time when they came around in 1994, I was there for the opening concert in Washington DC. That was August 1, 1994. Our seats sucked, but the sound was incredible. We went to DC by train, which was pretty cool. We stayed at a Holiday Inn near the Capitol, and in the middle of the night, the smoke alarms sounded and we had to evacuate the hotel. I didn't give a damn, I had just spent 2 and a half hours with Mick.

Philly And Pittsburgh

Sometime in September of 1994, I managed to get 18th row floor seats for the Stones' VooDoo Lounge concert in Philly. But, as with everything else in my life-- on the day of the concert, it was freezing cold, windy and raining like mad. But once again, I didn't care because 2 and a half hours with Mick is worth it. When we got into the stadium, our seats were about 30 feet from the stage. I couldn't believe I was gonna be that close to THE MAN. With the wind and rain, it was difficult to see and hear the concert, so I had the brilliant idea to stand on my chair. So did everyone else in the 17 rows in front of me. An announcement came on telling everyone to sit down because it was too dangerous to stand on wet chairs. Most everyone obeyed the announcement. Most everyone, because I did not. I was THE ONLY ONE IN THE FIRST 18 ROWS STANDING ON MY CHAIR. Of course I was dressed in a blaze-orange poncho, dripping wet, standing on my chair, screaming my head off at Mick Jagger. Trust me, he looked at me more than once that night. When the concert was over, it stopped raining...of course. On the radio on the way home, we heard that winds had been clocked gusting up to 65 mph inside Veteran's Stadium that night.

I went to see the Stones 6 days later in Pittsburgh. The seats again sucked, but the concert was much better because I didn't feel like a frozen drowned rat. This time my friend Michele and I went, and we hung out by the backstage enterance for an hour before the show. We were just sitting there when a strange lady holding a CAT sat down next to us. She was obviously retarded, and she had another older lady with her, kind of keeping an eye on her. The retarded lady and her cat told me that she was friends with the Stones guitar player, Ronnie Wood. I figured this chick was full of crap. She also told me that her cat could sing any Rolling Stones song I requested. I played along, requesting "Start Me Up". This retarded lady said " No, he'll sing 'It's Only Rock n Roll" instead". And with that, she bit the cat on the back of the neck until it shrieked like a banshee. Upon looking a little more closely, I noticed the cat had NO HAIR on its neck. Apparently this lady chewed on her cats neck quite frequently. Well, I got up to leave when the Retard's babysitter pulled out a photo album and started showing me all these pictures and newspaper clippings of Retard, her cat and famous people. And sure enough, there was a picture of Retard, cat and RONNIE WOOD. I had to leave, it was all too weird.
Once again, the seats sucked, but the concert was incredible. And for my added enjoyment, the guy sitting next to Michele kept feeling her up all night. I was dying with laughter everytime she had to remove his hand from several parts of her anatomy. That still makes me laugh. Oh, and on the way home, I asked Michele to read the map so I didn't get lost....well, 5 more minutes on the road and we would have been in OHIO!! Not a problem except we needed to be going the exact opposite direction.

Philly 1997

My friend Eric ( also known as The Beav)and I once again got tickets to Veteran's Stadium for the Stone's Bridges To Babylon concert on October 12, 1997. The weird thing about this concert is that it was on a Sunday night. We left the Harrisburg area at 2pm, then got stuck in traffic for 4 and a half hours. We were in a hurry, so we didn't make our typical restroom stop at the Valley Forge Burger King. We went right to the stadium. By the time we got in the parking lot, we both had to piss so bad we thought we were gonna die. The Stadium gates weren't due to open for at least another hour, so we went thru the parking lot to find the portables. We found 2 of them, located directly in front of the stadium enterance. But judging from the line, approximately 150 other people also did not stop at Burger King to piss. We waited in the line for 35 minutes, dreading what we were going to find once inside. Beav is a guy so I guess he really didn't care what the condition of the bathroom was, but I did care. Well, much to my surprise, when I got in there, it was THE CLEANEST portable outhouse I've ever been in!! Even though at least 50 people had used it before me. Oh, and an added bonus, The Stones were doing a sound check while I was in there. Nothing like pissing to the sound of Mick live.

The concert itself was great, but yet again, our seats were poor. We were on the upper level, about at the 50 yard line. The Bridges tour was the one where the Stones had a bridge come out from the main stage and connected to a smaller stage in the middle of the arena. That was cool. Also cool was the way the concert started. A huge blast of fireworks shot out vertically across the crowd as the first chords of Start Me up were played. By the way, for anyone keeping score, Start Me up is my favorite Stones song. * I also met a new friend at this concert-not as interesting as Retard and her cat, but this one was pretty good. This kid had the seat next to me, on my right side. Before the concert started, he introduced himself--"hi, my name is Matt..." 30 minutes later Matt had told me his entire life story, how he lived a few blocks away in downtown Philly, how his friend who was with him was drunk, how his parents turned him on to The Stones....Matt also smoked quite a few joints and drank a lot of beer thru the course of the concert...I dont know how he got served the beer because he was only 17. Slowly but surely, song after song, Matt was sliding into my chair. By the end of the concert, he was fully laying on top of me. But again, I didn't care, I had just spent 2 and a half hours with Mick!!

Philly 1999

This was by far THE BEST CONCERT I'VE EVER BEEN TO in my whole life. The concert was in March 1999. I had my tickets In November1998. Do you know how long that is to wait for something as important as a date with Mick? I got my tickets thru a special 30 minute pre-sale from VH1. You had 30 minutes to get thru to get tickets for the concert the DAY BEFORE they went on sale. the trick was to get thru...and I did!! I got first row seats on the first section from the floor. I was excited. This time I went to Philly with Beav and Joanna-a girl I knew from work. Incidentally, Beav had a huge crush on Joanna...even though the Beav is engaged. Anyway, the day of the concert, I couldn't believe it was so cold for March. There was snow on the ground, it had snowed several inches the night before, but luckily it had melted from the roads. On the way to the concert, Joanna and I decided we were going to tell Beav a story about another girl he had a crush on--Amanda. As he was driving down the PA turnpike, we told him that Amanda had a lesbian affair with her college room mate when she was drunk. But then she sobered up, decided she liked it, then did it again. Eric almost killed all of us when he swerved the car all over the road, trying to grasp what we just told him. And by the way, we never did tell him we just made that story up. Anyway, by the time we got to Valley Forge's Burger King, we were ready to take a restroom break. Well, just as our luck would be, the Burger King was closed due to a ROBBERY!! But, not being ones to make the same mistake twice, we headed to the King of Prussia Mall where we used the bathroom at Sears. We finally got to the First Union Center, where the parking lot attendant thought one of the several stickers and signs we had on the car was a VIP parking pass. So they directed us to the VIP parking lot where we then got out the alcohol and had a little party of our own. ( I've never attended a Rolling Stones concert completely sober. I couldn't handle the excitement) When they opened the doors, we ran inside cuz once again we had to piss like racehorses on derby day. We got to our seats and I almost died. We were SO close to the main stage, and they also had the small stage in the middle of the arena. We were about 30 feet from the small stage. I had an aisle seat, and when Mick came out to the small stage, I took off running to the small stage too. I ended up on some guys chair, I fell off of this guys chair more than once but I got to see Mick. You can read my review of the concert here, its the 4th one down the list( not to mention the best!). I was breathing Mick's air. And he LOOKED at me. Joanna saw him look at me too. I could have died right there on the spot and not cared. Mick is hot. Yeah I said he's hot, even though he is the same age as my own father. The Stones are rumored to be having some sort of New years concert in the US, but I haven't heard a confirmation as of yet. If anyone hears, for the love of God, let me know ASAP.

these are my Rolling Stones Ticket stubs. Yes, I really spent $150 for the ticket to the concert In 1999.
