The Origin of the crossover Allen says about the origin of his signature move: "I was 15 and playing AAU ball, watching a teamate do the crossover. He was shaking people so bad. I knew with my quickness and my speed, it would be a great move for me. I couldn't get the crossover at first. It was a lot harder than it looked. I finally got the move down at Georgetown. A walk-on showed me his crossover. But I added little things to it, made i t my own move."

The Fundamentals of the crossover "I like to cross over at the top of the arc. From there I can cross it to either side. I try to keep my man close, but on enough distance to keep his hands away from the ball. The crossover is a great way to shake a defender and get to the basket. It's exciting, somthing fans get into. They like seeing a player being left in the dust.

"A lot of players concentrate so hard on doing the crossover that they don't look at the defender. I always keep my eyes on my man." If he doesn't go for my fake, then I won't do the move."

Try to explode. Don't let the defender see that you're about to do the move, just explode. Watching Iverson is a great way to learn the move. Download a movie from the crossover gallery, study it and learn the move. That's how I learned it. When doing the move, Allen actually lifts his left foot out to the left a bit while he has the ball in his left hand, holding his right hand a little to the right from his right hip. Then, he explodes, takes a wide step out to the left and throws his right hand in front of his chest, to really make it look like he's taking off in that direction.

Step by Step how to do the crossover

Step One While dribbling the ball with you left hand, quickly take a wide step to the left, leaning your body in that direction. Be sure to give a good head fake to really make it look like your taking off in that direction. Always observe if your man goes for the fake, if he doesn't don't try to get by him. Iversoon often "hangs" for a moment in the air before exploding. Bring the ball way out to your left side.

Step Two Change direction. Once your man goes for your fake, totally change direction. Then, bring the ball across, over to your right hand. When you bounce the ball, make sure you bring it way over to the other side. Use your left foot to spark you accaleration. Don't leave your man any time to recover, speed up and blow right by him.

Step Three Time to control the ball with your right hand. Shift your weight to the side you're now dribbling on. My defender's momentum should take him in the opposite direction. Still, remember to watch your man. If he still doesn't go for the fake, stop. If you have cleared your way to the hoop, it's time to move on to the fourth step.

Step Four Speed up. If you have made a good move, you should be ready to make a easy layup. When you have beaten your man, two things can happen: Either a big man will step up and stop you, and you'll have to dish it off to someone else, or you'll go all the way to the hole. The crossover is an effective way of breaking down the defence. But remember this - don't do the crossover too often. Then it'll loose its effectivity. Try to practice it in one-on-one games. Good Luck!
