"Okay, dispatcher, this is unit zero-zero-four. Over." Morgan recited into the radio.
"Alright, zero-zero-four. We've got a call in for a possible concussion, nine-year-old white female. Over." the dispatcher informed her.
"Location? Over."
"Jefferson Elementary, do you need an address or directions? Over."
"No, we know where that is. We'll check in with you later. Over."
"Well, where to? I thought I heard Jefferson, is that right?" Morgan's partner, Josh asked.
"Yep, Jefferson Elementary. Do you know where that is?"
"I'm pretty sure," he replied as he steered his way around the corner, "but if I start going the wrong way, that's your signal to step in and put me in my place. You may have to lay the smack down on my navigational skills." He laughed.
"Okay, Joshy, whatever you say," she said sarcastically as she rolled her eyes at him.
In reply, he stuck his tongue out at her.
"Ooh, yeah, that was real mature. I'm sure you'll really be racking the girls in with smooth moves like that," she teased.
"I hear some people find that sexy. Anyways, you're not one to talk. When was the last time you even went on a date? You keep rejecting me and I know it's not because you have all the other guys lined up and waiting their turn for you."
"This really isn't the time to be talking about this. We've got a little girl with a concussion to worry about."
"Fine, but don't think you're off the hook."
"I'm gonna go get stuff ready in the back."
Upon their arrival at the school, they found a nearly abandoned playground with a small group of children and adults gathered near the monkey bars.
When they reached the crowd, Morgan's first impression was that the girl was completely fine and that the school had only called them as a precaution to save themselves a lawsuit. Josh was busy comforting the adults and trying to convince them things were under control. He managed to get the kids to go back to the school.
"Hi, sweetie, my name is Morgan Daniels and that guy over there is Josh Bender. What's your name?" Morgan asked the little girl.
"Chrissy," the girl shyly replied.
"Chrissy, are your mommy and daddy here?"
"No."
"Okay. So what happened? We hear you bumped your head."
"Yup. I fell from the top," she said as she pointed to the monkey bars.
"Uh-oh. That doesn't sound good. So how do you feel?"
"Actually, a little bored. They've made me sit here since it happened."
"When was that?"
"A loooong time ago."
"That's so awful. How about I let you talk to Josh for a little while? He can be entertaining."
Chrissy nodded.
"Oh, Josh!" Morgan called to her partner. "I've found a beautiful girl you may want to meet."
Josh came over to her and they quickly filled each other in on what they discovered. Morgan took Josh over to meet Chrissy.
"Chrissy, this is Josh. Josh, Chrissy," Morgan said.
"Chrissy, how old are you? You must be at least twenty," Josh said playfully.
"I'm nine!" she laughed.
"Nine?!" Morgan heard Josh exclaim as she walked to find the adults.
v"Hi, I'm Morgan Daniels," she said as she reached the group. "I just have a couple questions for all of you, is that okay?"
They all agreed.
"Okay, well first off, who actually saw her fall?"
"I did," a small elderly woman responded. "She was sitting on top of that jungle gym and I think she may have been trying to get down, but she landed on her shoulder and head the most."
"Okay, thanks. Who called 911?"
"That was her," the same woman responded as she pointed to a younger woman.
"Yes, after hearing she hit her head, we decided it would be best to make sure everything was definitely okay," she stated.
"Alright, and lastly, have the parents been contacted?"
"The father is out of town and the mom was away from her office. Her secretary said she would send her over here as soon as she returned, but we've not actually spoken with her," the young woman responded.
"I see. Well, based on my quick examination and my little chat with her, she seems fine. I'm getting the impression that you really only called us as a precaution, right?" There were nods all around. "Okay. Well unless any of you think we need to take a closer look at her, I think she is a perfectly healthy girl, however, it would be a good idea to keep an eye on her and tell the parents to do the same."
"Well, thank you," the older woman replied.
"Yes, you've been very helpful," the one responded.
Morgan then walked over to get Josh. "Joshy!" she called as she walked nearer to him. He and the little girl were giggling about something when she reached them.
"Chrissy, you're as good as new," Morgan declared cheerfully.
Chrissy smiled.
"Well, I guess that means we're off. Bye, Chrissy. Nice meeting you," Josh said.
Chrissy blushed and quietly said, "Bye."
"Someone's got a crush on Joshy," Morgan giggled as they walked back over to the ambulance.
"Please tell me it's you," he flirtatiously responded.
She lightly smacked his should then said, "How cute was that girl?"
"Yeah, she was a sweet little darling. Don't you wish all of our calls were this easy?"
"Yeah...we done good, boy!" Morgan laughed.
"I'll take you out to dinner to celebrate," Josh suggested.
"Damn, you just never give up, do you?"
"Oh, come on, Morg, live a little!"
"I live plenty, except for when you refer to me as a morgue."
He laughed. "Someday, I'll come up with a better nickname."
"Until that day, stick to Morgan. Besides, it won't take much to be better than Morg."
They got back into the ambulance, heading back towards the hospital.
