chapter 1

"Cops! Run!" The kids split in all directions as a cop car turned down the alley. Tonya hid behind a garbage dumpster, her heart pounding in fear. She wasn't the one doing speed or crack-only cigs and weed. Still, the police would turn her in, and the last thing she needed was a trip to the police station again. Again. She had gotten picked up by the police twice; once for drugs and the other for drinking underage. Both times her mother had to get her, and both times she got beat at home. It was embarressing more than anything else. She was a big, tall girl, but her mother, even though she was small, was so strong...she was really getting hurt. Most of the time she got away before the cops got her.

"Yo girl?" Tonya looked up, startled. It was her friend, Serra.

"What you doin'?" Tonya asked. Serra didn't do the drugs. Serra was smart, and she was going to get out of here. Serra was also pretty, which Tonya was jealous of. Serra's tanned skin and blue eyes were so beautiful, compared to Tonya's eboney skin and coal black eyes. Well, Tonya thought so at least. They both were 19.

"Dameon woke up, I guess it was the sirens. He won't stop crying and he wants you. Crystal's watching him right now."

Her baby. He needed her. If she hadn't been down here, maybe he wouldn't be crying right now. It was her fault all her fault...

"Tonya, co'mon!"

Tonya run up the alley to her apartment she shared with her mother, sister Crystal, and her son. Serra was right behind her.

Her mother saw her coming and opened the door. "Why are you running around at all hours of the night? You should be home with YOUR CHILD instead hanging around all those drop-outs. And you smell like smoke too, young lady..."

Tonya ran past her mother so fast their apartment shook slighty. She ran to her room where her beautiful baby boy was sitting up in his bed, crying.

"Baby, don't cry..shhhhh...it'll be alright"

Her mother, Dee, was a short small women. You could see the scars of life have done to her in her brown eyes. Dee's been through hell and back, from raising 3 young childern on her own when her husband left her. Broke and helpless, the family had to go on welfare. They lived on food stamps for years while Dee searched for a job. Dee's oldest child, Marie, graduated with honors and went on to NYC. She wanted to become a doctor, and she did. Dee was so very proud and told everyone she knew. Her next child, Crystal, went to the local Vo-Tec and became a beautican. Even though that wasn't excatly what she was thinking of, Dee was proud that she got somewhere even if she still lived at home.Dee's hopes for her third child, Tonya, were shattered when Tonya got pregant when she was 15. Even though she loved her grandson, she was very disappointed in Tonya.
