Since formal appointment of nine members in March, 1999 and a meeting with the commissioners in late June, the panel named itself the Fayette Voter Fraud Committee and formulated a mission statement. Over the past few months, the committee has been committed to fulfilling its established mission to develop a set of recommendations to the commissioners to guard against voter fraud in Fayette County.
On October 18, 1999, a full ten days prior to the Fayette County Investigating Grand Jury's released findings in a report Thursday, October 28, the Fayette Voter Fraud Committee presented by hand delivery its several recommendations to the commissioners.
Without the benefit of a county budget, testimony from public policy experts and key witnesses, or advice of legal advisors, the committee devised many recommendations which in fact were similar to the recommendations in the Investigating Grand Jury Report.
The committee feels that this fact is evidence that the committee took its duties very seriously.
Many other areas of concern were discussed by the committee. Those included encouraging the education of the public and youth in particular about the electoral process. The committee accepted an interested area student as an aide to the committee, and attempted to formulate a plan to involve area high school and college students in its mission as well as develop a program of instruction concerning the electoral process.
Though these and other ideas are unfulfilled at this time, the committee trusts that its work will prove of substantial service to the Fayette County community.
The committee acknowledges that our terms expire at the end of this administration. Whether to reappoint interested committee members to another term, or appoint anew, is a decision to be made by the new administration. Each committee member offers to step aside to allow for an easy transition.
While we respectfully suggest that members to such a Fayette Voter Fraud Committee continue to be appointed in successive administrations, we hope that ultimately the initial basis for the establishment of the committee, voter fraud in Fayette County, will be eliminated.
Sincerely, Chairman, Peter Malik Co-Chair, Secretary/Treas., Delinda Young Art Bakewell Don Burik Paul Cassidy Sondra Cesarino Curtis DeShong Vicki Leonelli Jerry Mazza
