China has an extremely vast rail network, and while it has a land mass around the same size as Australia the amount of rail activity is much much greater. There seems to be a yard in every town with at least a few cars in. Most of these towns are very largely populated. Below is some pictures I have taken over China. More are on the way, I just have to locate them!
Here are some photographs of the massive hump railway yard at Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, PRC. A hump yard has a small subtle raised section of rail at the top of the yard so when a train pushes the rail cars over it, the cars uncouple automatically and roll into their respective tracks. The concept of hump shunting is not new, but this was the first hump yard I saw in action. Note in the back of the color photograph, the local 18 car passenger train, quite a contrast to most Australian passenger trains!
This is a photo taken from my train looking at an industrial yard, probably a quarry somewhere near the Yangtze river.
