On my first trip to China around January 2000, I never really saw much electric passenger work. Most seemed to be done by the DF4 or DF11 diesels. On my second trip May 2001, it seems that many services have been replaced by the SS8 locomotives. Here is a collection of the brilliant SS8 electric locomotives.

My first ever sighting of an SS8. I photographed this one somewhere along the Hong Kong- Beijing mainline on January 10, 2000.

Heading back to Hong Kong from Shanghai, I stuck my lens out of the window and captured SS8 0065 with a train heading for Ghanzhou on February 4, 2000.

Here are two seperate trains, both led by SS8 0065. Loco 0065 is being leased to the Guangshen Railway Company from the national rail system China Rail. The Guangshen Railway Company is a semi-privatised railway company which operates in Southern China. The first photo was taken on May 16 2001 at Fanling, New Territories, Hong Kong SAR. The second was taken in Fo Tan, New Territories, Hong Kong SAR, and is heading for Ghanzhou, Guandong Province, China - May 23 2001. The visible differences of the Ghanzhou SS8's as compared to China Rail's SS8 locos, are the company slogan down the side and the dark red decals on the cab windows.

Another two photographs from Shenzhen, Guangdong province, PRC - May 28 2001. The loco on duty is China Rail SS8 0193 heading for Shenzhen railway station. The first picture was actually taken like this, it's purpose is to diplay it at such an angle where the pilot of the locomotive is horizontal, or nearly 45 degrees.
