It's Rosh Hashanah ! Sweet !

Wishing you peace, prosperity, health, and happiness !

Rosh Hashanah is not just a holiday celebrating the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah, which occurs on the 1st day of Tishri or Tishrei, which is the 1st day of the seventh month in the Hebrew/Jewish calendar, represents a special time for religious reasons that are outlined in the Talmud, and agricultural reasons that are related to the summer/autumn seasons in Israel. Learn fascinating facts about Rosh Hashanah beyond knowing it is the Jewish New Year, including it being the peak in the year for a major event that affects not only each and every Jewish person, but each and every human on earth, for the upcoming year.

What do the words "Rosh Hashanah" mean?

Rosh Hashanah is actually three words: Rosh, Ha, and Shanah, with "HaShanah" often written together. The word "Rosh" means "Head" in Hebrew, and the word "Ha" in this context means "of the" in Hebrew, and the word "Shanah" means "Year" in Hebrew. So "Rosh Hashanah" literally means "Head of the Year" in Hebrew, and not the "Jewish New Year" as is often thought. Why? The answer is based on rabbinical interpretations of the significance of the first day of the seventh Hebrew/Jewish month of Tishrei or Tishri vis--vis not only the Jewish people, but of all humanity.

Rosh Hashanah is one of the more well-known Jewish holidays, likely because most Jewish people celebrate it, and because it signifies the beginning of a ten-day period of deep soul-searching reflection and self-examination over how one conducted oneself over the past year, as well as a wholehearted commitment to making amends and taking action to make amends for past wrongdoings between oneself and G-d, but not between oneself and other people, which can only be achieved by obtaining forgiveness from the one that was wronged.
