Janelle's Awesome Show

March 5, 1999 The Vogue Theatre Vancouver, BC, Canada Well, after much anticipation, my first live Marvies experience came on March 5, 1999. It was a day I thought would never come. It was a day I would remember forever. My boyfriend and I began our trek to the Great White North around 11:00 AM on March 5, the morning of the show. A drive that usually takes three hours turned into an eternity as my nerves were running amuck and my patience was wearing very thin. I WANTED TO SEE THE MARVELOUS THREE and I wanted to see them NOW. We arrived in Vancouver around 2:30 PM… still 5 ½ hours until showtime! After resting a bit and wandering around the city for a few hours, it was finally time. It was 7:45 PM when we decided to venture to our 8th row, just right of center seats at the Vogue. I was so excited I couldn’t stand it! About 10 minutes later, two DJ’s from Vancouver’s local radio station came out to do a little introduction for the Marvelous 3. They babbled for a minute or so, saying how M3 had been traveling around in a very small van for a few weeks and were now backstage showering and drinking beers. OK, whatever guys! Get the heck off the stage! Bring on those Marvies! Anyway, a minute later I saw Butch, Jayce and Slug backstage. YAY! Butch walked out to the front of the stage and, with his back to the audience, began strumming his guitar. After much coaxing, by my boyfriend, I walked up to where Butch was standing to introduce myself. I must’ve yelled his name three times before he heard me and turned around. I waved and said, “Hi! It’s Janelle!” He got the biggest smile on his face, walked over to me, shook my hand and excitedly said, “Hi! Nice to meet you! Thanks for coming out. We’re going to play to warm up the crowd!” Oh, he is sooo cute. So I walked back to my seat and, just seconds later, Butch broke into ‘Allison’ by Elvis Costello. Just Butch and his guitar up there on stage… very cool! A few verses into ‘Allison’, Jayce and Slug took the stage, the lights went down and that is when all the craziness began! The boys burst into ‘You’re So Yesterday’ as they bopped their way about the stage. ‘Over Your Head’ came next and, apparently, so was the need for Jayce to graciously give the crowd the bird. What a hilarious sight that was. At this early on in the show, I could tell that Butch, Jayce and Slug were truly enjoying themselves. Even though the crowd was not into it, because they had no idea who the Marvelous 3 were, the boys still rocked the house. Their zaniness did not subside at any point during the show. Running and jumping through such songs as ‘Write It On Your Hand’, ‘Indie Queen’ and ‘Make Up’ was enough to make any Marvelous 3 fan realize how special these guys are. I was proud to be the only person standing throughout their set at this point…. a true supporter. Only after pleading with the crowd to “stand up!” while relaying “we’re not use to this”, did a few decide to rise as the first few chords of ‘Freak Of The Week’ blared through the speakers. While ‘Freak Of The Week’ was definitely a highlight of the show, in regards to crowd involvement, it was time for the fun to end. The boys from M3 closed out their set with ‘Always Something There To Remind Me’ by Naked Eyes… another crowd pleaser. It was a night that I thought would never come and a night that so quickly ended. From Butch’s facial expressions and face licking (Jayce’s of course) right down to the simultaneous guitar strumming and swaying, it was definitely one of the best nights of my life. All of the hype I had previously heard about the band was proven to be right on. I didn’t expect anything less. So, the wait for my second live Marvies experience now begins… by: Janelle, Seattle WA
