Slayer announces box-set plans...

Slayer plans to release no less than two box-sets during 2000! "We talked about releasing a box-set last Christmas," says guitarist Kerry King, "but decided to concentrate on the new album instead. Now it's happening and there's going to be two versions. One will contain everything that we've done with Rick Rubin, from Reign In Blood onwards. There won't be any rare, unreleased songs, because if we record something, we release it. We might include some four-track home recordings, because they show how songs were created. The second version of the box set might be a toned-down, cheaper version which may contain some backstage passes or plectrums--anything taken from the live environment." Meanwhile, the band are hard at work on material for the new studio album, which they hope to release in June. "We're writing and recording in a home studio," says King. "There's no pressure. We've got six or seven new songs and a whole load of titles, but we haven't allocated them to songs yet. Right now we just want to concentrate on getting the music out. Tom [Araya, bassist/vocalist] just got back to California, so hopefully we'll be firing on all pistons soon."

ARCH ENEMY
Arch Enemy have just completed their first US tour. The 3 week run of dates in support of Nevermore was a successful endeavor for the Swedish band who overwhelmed audiences wherever they played. Now back home, the group will be taking some time off as guitarist Michael Amott concentrates on his other band Spiritual Beggars. With any luck we may see some festival appearances from Arch Enemy over the summer.

BLOODBATH
February 8th marks the domestic street date for Bloodbath's much-anticipated debut. Breeding Death (a 3-song EP) is gaining heaps of praise from metal stalwarts who have heard this project band's return to straight-ahead, old-school death metal. Bloodbath features Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth on vocals, Jonas Renkse of Katatonia and October Tide on bass, Blackheim from Katatonia and Diabolical Masquerade on guitar and noted producer Dan Swano of Edge Of Sanity and Nightingale fame on drums.

BORKNAGAR
Norway's Borknagar are currently recording the follow-up to The Archaic Course in Sweden's Abyss Studio with producer Peter Tagtgren. The album, titled Quintessence, should see a May release. Joining the band are new drummer Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect) and synth player Lars Are Nedland (Solefald).

CRYPTOPSY
Cryptopsy continue writing the follow-up to Whisper Supremacy. The band are expected to record in the late spring for a late summer release. Some new titles include "And Then It Passes" and "We Bleed". Vocalist Mike DiSalvo describes the new material as "even more extreme than anything we've ever done".

DARK TRANQUILLITY
The band have deservedly been nominated for a Swedish Grammy award for best Swedish band in the "Hard Rock" category (other nominees include LOK, Breach, and Nomads). They state, "The band appreciates this confirmation of their artistic integrity and desire to reinvent their music instead of safely staying within the same musical borders year after year." The awards ceremony will take place on February 14th. We here at Century Media couldn't be happier and wish them the best of luck!

THE GATHERING
The Gathering's live album, Superheat, was released domestically on January 25th. The album features live recordings from shows in Amsterdam and Tilburg, Holland on their How To Measure A Planet? tour. Consisting of songs from their last three albums, the release also contains a bonus video CD-ROM track for "Eleanor" that was recorded during a live performance in Krakow, Poland in 1997. The band are currently touring Europe with My Dying Bride through the month of February before returning to the studio to record their next studio effort scheduled for a mid-summer release.

KRISIUN
Coming March 7th is the much-anticipated release, Conquerors Of Armageddon, from Brazil's Krisiun. Produced by Morbid Angel/Hate Eternal guitarist Eric Rutan and Andy Classen this disc is an annihilative display of ferocious barbarity.

NOCTURNAL RITES
Nocturnal Rites are currently recording their new album, their first with new lead singer Johnny Lindkvist. The follow-up to The Sacred Talisman is expected to be released in early summer.

OLD MAN'S CHILD
Norway's Old Man's Child have finished recording their fourth album, Revelation 666: The Curse Of Damnation, at Abyss Studio with producer Peter Tagtgren. Band leader Galder has re-teamed up with guitarist Jarder and ex-Dimmu Borgir drummer Tjodalv to create a new album of epic proportions incorporating elements from all of their album's, as well as some new areas. The album will be released domestically March 21st and the band is expected to follow-up the release with their first US tour.

ROTTING CHRIST
Rotting Christ saw much of the world in support of their last album, The Sleep Of Angels, touring throughout Europe, the Middle East, the US and South America. Now the Greek band is readying themselves to enter Abyss Studio to record its follow-up. The record will be issued some time in mid- to late-summer.

Usurper ready next attack...

Chicago's Usurper have completed their forthcoming long-player, ‘Visions From The Gods,’ which contains the demo of the same name, as well as new and live tracks! This album will feature a sound closer to the legendary ‘Threshold Of The Usurper’ EP. The band will return to the studio later this year for a full-length of all new material. The complete track listing for ‘Visions From The Gods’ is as follows: Soulstalker ‘96 / Deep In The Forest / Visions From The Gods / Dusk / Soulstalker (original) / Charon / Bonefire / Wolflord (Night Prowler Version) / Blood Passion (live)

That’s the good news. The bad news is that bassist Necromancer Jon fell off a two-story roof and broke his nose, shattered his heel and ankle, and broke his wrist. He has to undergo surgery on his foot, and as far as his wrist goes, it could be as minor as a fracture or as major as some broken bones. Regardless, guitarist Rick Scythe has spoken to him since the accident (even though Jon is heavily sedated on morphine) and was told that Jon wants to practice in about two weeks. If it’s more serious than he thinks and won't be healed for a few months, he told Rick he wants me to play bass on the album rather than postponing it. Usurper is also in the planning stages for their first full U.S. tour for the late spring/summer 2000...
