SPECIFIC GOAL FOR THE SPEECH: “I want the audience to _______________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________
What two or three general categories could you cover that would accomplish your speech goal? You may want to list 4 or 5 and narrow your choices to the 2 or 3 best topical areas. For a 5 minute speech pick the two best and most general topical areas. For a 10 minute speech pick three of the best and most general topical areas.

Place the two or three topical areas you've narrowed down on the lines below. These will later be used as overview topical areas.

Construct your MOTIVATIONAL STEP-AS A COMPLETE SENTENCE.
Remember the motivational step is just the speech specific goal worded as a promise of benefit to come. (For example: “Today I will give you a better understanding of selecting the right German Shepherd Puppy for you.”)
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Now place those 2 OR 3 narrowed down overview topical areas from the previous lines on the lines below.
OVERVIEW:

__________________________________

Now it’s time to construct MAIN POINTS.
Using each of the Overview Topical Areas construct a thesis statement formated sentence for each. Remember, a thesis statement formated sentence is a statement about a topical area that when explained would justify or clarify the statement.
Ideally, each thesis statement sentences will contain the elements of their own development. These “elements” or qualifiers can be identified using the same thought process you used to come up with your overview topical areas. Now contruct your main points and place them on the lines below.
MAIN POINTS:
I. ______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ II. ______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ III. ______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ Now, these main points need to be developed. That is they need to be explained. If we have constructed them using the method described above, each will have two or three elements/qualifiers in it. We simply discuss each qualifier and include any source data as we move from qualifier to qualifier. When we have developed a main point it’s time to transition to the next main point.
Remember, use backward and forward reaching transitions which point back to the topical area you have just covered and forward to the topical area you are about to cover. These B&F transitions are a repeat of the overview topical areas.
Once we have developed each main point we have really done most of the job we came to do. Now it’s time to reinforce that job (making good on the promise of benefit to come which we call the motivational step). It’s time to construct the Conclusion of our speech.
The Conclusion reinforces everything we have done so far in the speech. It has three parts:
The Comprehensive Summary, the Purpose Statement and the Closure.
First the Summary. The Summary is a repeat of the Overview topical areas. When we include some of the high points of development that were contained in developing these areas as respective main points, we have made the summary “comprehensive”.
List your Summary areas below along with a couple of high points of development for each topical area:
“well today we covered

_____________________________________
_____________________________________
“and then we talked about”
_______________________________________________
______________________________________
______________________________________
“and finally we discussed”

________________________________________
Now we simply state the motivational step in the affirmative and we have our Purpose Statement.
PURPOSE STATEMENT: “So now you have a better understanding of underwater of picking a German
Shepherd puppy that will be right for you.”
YOUR PURPOSE STATEMENT:
______________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
Well, we've completed our comprehensive summary and the purpose statement. Now its time to leave gracefully. So, let see how the Closure works:
Remember, the closure DOES NOT offer additional information. It simply acts to offer the audience a place to go from here. It does this by inviting contact on an informal basis.
Something like this: “If you want to know more about underwater basket weaving I would be happy to talk with you about it during the break or after class."
A good closure gives interested audience members a place to go from here. The better than average closure offers contact and additional information in the form of pamphlets, phone numbers etc.
OK, LET’S HAVE YOUR CLOSURE:
________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________THANK YOU!!
But above all else, the closure offers an IRON CLAD ENDING TO THE PRESENTATION. You must end each speech/presentation with only two words passing your lips, “THANK YOU”. Saying “Thank You” lets the audience know you are finished and it’s time to clap.
“THANK YOU”
Great, we’re done right???? Well not quite yet.
Remember way back at the beginning of this worksheet? You started out with a motivational step (also called the specific speech goal. Well now it’s time to think about how to start the speech presentation by grabbing the audiences’ attention. We construct the Attention Getting Step next.
The Attention Getting Step should be much easier to construct now that you are thoroughly familiar with your presentation. Okay, now think about the entire presentation. Got it? Okay, now imagine you wanted to strike up a conversation with someone about your topic. How would you get into the conversation???? Would you use an anecdote (you know, a short story with lots of vivid language to grab someone’s attention)? Would you use a more direct approach? What would get that someone prepared to hear about your topic in detail?
Below write down what kind of attention getting step you will use and jot down some particulars that may come to mind:

___________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________
Once you get this done your presentation is done. Now what follows is an outline form that you can use to pull it all together. Just fill it in from the contents of this worksheet. Remember, once it’s down for you to see you may want to edit or change it. But remember, the final outline is just that …. an outline. It’s not a narrative for you to read or memorize.
You must present EXTEMPORANEOUSLY
