"Me and My Bright Ideas"

Aug 06 2001

Here it is and nearly another month and a half has passed. Still nothing new! Well this is about to change. I have some items I plan to put up real soon. Maybe a review or two. Maybe another link infested 'surf rant'.

Of course I have an excuses for the shoddy updating of this site.

Firstly there is my new gig with Pitchfork. I submit two pieces twice a week. This requires alot of scavenging for indie rock stories online which actually takes a bit of time. I enjoy it and it does get me that much needed online content writer experience that I crave. Yes, in this time when the internet begins to resemble mall more and more everyday, I want to be an internet writer. Crazy, I know. Upside of all of this though is I am writing everyday.

The second reason is largely a more philosophical one. The sheer silence that you get confronted with when you have a personal page such as this. Granted I have not spread the word around.

Now the reason for this lack of self advertisement comes down to the fact that I was hoping to build up my content abit more before having a grand opening. But truthfully, how can you have a grand open nearly two years after the fact?

Yeah, I am aware that this is a circular dilemma. You gotta get motivated or nothing will happen. As anyone who has followed this page will already know...I have been spreading myself very thin. Now I am paying for it by being bogged down with goals and having little drive to follow up on it.

But hopefully this will change. I've gotten some positive feedback from my old friend Brian C. who thinks I am doing pretty good here. And that sort of encouragement is required for things like this to persist. Thanks, Bri.

So now is the time to make good on getting back to GOJ. This year has been less than ideal but really that's no excuse if I want to have a webpage. I know there is alot of ghost sites out there but one of the things I wanted for this site was that it would be a living site. So look out! Here I go again!

Thanks for stopping in. Keep checking in! - George

Damn! A whole month and half has nearly blown by and still no new content!

My plate is way full these days. I am looking at a new job..a real job..which threatens to swallow me entirely. Atop of this I have begun working for Pitchforkmedia.com as one of their many news writers. It forces me to write more than I ever had before. Which is great but this site is suffering because of this.

Then there is the gaming group. We have been stalled for months because of scheduling problems. When and if this will ever get back on track is anyone's guess. I am considering some other options to get my hobby jones sated.

All this grousing makes me wonder if this is worth the hassle. But instead of just pulling the plug, I am going to take the next month and a half to re-evaluate. Can I continue to post stuff here with all my other projects and obligations. I don't know. I guess I'll just give it time

Thanks for stopping in.

Hey I made it back! Damn life! Always intruding into my creative time.

But this time I actually have things to post! No internet inofmation treasure hunt this time. What I have here is two bits of my own. First off you got Off The Cuff, an essay on my computer life. And then to finish up, I put together a review of Prey by Graham Masterton.

Thanks for stopping in

Well nothing constructive here. Working on tons of stuff and nothing to show. Things have not stalled just dropped to a crawl. Focusing a bit more on the writing than the hobby stuff I do. Lot of time in front of the machine but less time online.

Just not enough time to get it all in. That life thing just won't let me be.

Actually reading more these days, if you care. George Pelecanos, Joe Lansdale, Graham Masterton. Anything really. A good cheap past time for the struggling creative type. Maybe I'll do some reviews. Maybe being the operative word.

The future right now is hard to forsee so who knows when I strike next! Perhaps tomorrow? Sounds good. A link infested rant by the end of the week.

Well time to give some credit where it's due. Today's links come from a quick breeze by of Plastic ! Just doing my bit for recycling for you busy types. Now as counterpoint to my dysfunctional dystopian finds, here's "Embracing The Recession" - in regularand plastic form!

Wondering what the White House shooting was all about?

For those more inclined to pick a joystick or press a button... You can get nostalgic with The Seven Most F***ed up Video Games ever or look to the future with Orgasms on Demand.

When you've had enough, do you civic duty and fight communismby printing out some posters !

And if you just have to have a soundtrack for all of this, here is some obscure techno.

One of my favorite classic films is Streetcar Named Desire. (The others is a list too long to mention at the moment.) So when I had chance to see Cat on A Hot Tin Roof , I jumped at it. Tennessee Williams, I gotta read more, Tennessee Williams.

So enough with the dysfunctional past, off to the dysfunctional future of the past. Or something like that.

Reading Wait for Last Year His powers of extrapolation can be down right spooky. More after I finish it. On the alternate reality front - The Ubik Movie?

So How much of Blade Runner has come true?

Continuing on my dystopian dysfunctional bender, "Sex, Capitalism, and Antidepressants" by Rick Moody and Mary Gaitskill. And it is about what it says it is.

For some reason I have been taken with The California Energy Crisis. Here's Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackout by Bruce Sterling, a great sf writer and ... Viridian?

Or if you just wanna watch the flames, there is always Annoyed.

I am honestly tired of trying to run everything through such a tight focus. There are numerous sides to my personality and I'd like to give all of them a chance to come through.
