Chapter One

Emily walked into the brownstone, adjusting her dress nervously. Juan had just come back from his first tour, two whole weeks, and she really missed him! When she came into his room, he grabbed her around the waist, and swung her around.

''Oh, I missed you!'' he said, drinking her in.

''I missed you, too...'' she sighed huskily.

Kissing her passionately, he carried her over to the bed and lay her down...

''Juan? You home?'' Taggert called, coming into the apartment noisily.

''Shhh.'' he whispered, placing a finger on her lips. ''I'll be back...''

''Kay...''

''Hey, you wanna get me a...'' he said, tilting his head towards the nightstand.

''Uh, sure...''

Nodding, he slipped out of the room...

After he closed the door behind him, she went to his top drawyer, and found a strange-looking plastic bag...

The GH emergency room was in a frenzy as the double-accident victims were rushed into the room. They had been sharing a cab, and then it hit a lightpole, killing the driver instantly. After only a few minutes, Dr. Monica Quartermaine came out looking very grave.

''Ned? Mr. DiLucca? I... I'm sorry. We've lost them...''

''My... my Hannah?'' Roy asked brokenly.

''I'm sorry about your daughter, Mr. DiLucca.''

''I... I gotta go call Jax...'' Ned muttered, running out, causing Monica to stare after him in confusion...

Juan re-entered the room to find a very angry Emily, holding his bag of speed in one hand, the other on her hip!

''What is this doing here?!'' she demanded, shaking the bag in his face.

''Gimme that!'' he yelled, reaching for it.

But, she ran out of his grasp, and to the bathroom, where she flushed the contents of the bag!

''Are you nuts?! I need that to perform!'' he growled.

''Well, if you were planning on doing any... other type of performing, then you shouldn't be taking it.'' she retorted.

''Look---'' he began, red-faced.

''No! You, look!'' she said, facing him, anger flashing in her brown eyes. ''I was on drugs once; I OD! We will get you off, or we are through!''

''Em---''

''No, I mean it...'' she said softly, turning away from him.

''Okay, okay...'' he relented, putting his arms around her waist. ''We can't tell anyone... I'll be ruined...''

''Okay.'' she agreed. ''Let's go... I... I'll take care of you...''

''Go where?''

''You'll see.'' she answered, leading him back to his room...

Chapter Two

Monica Quartermaine walked into the mansion after her extremely long day to see most of her family gathered in the living-room, staring at a note on the table ominiously.

''What's going on?'' she asked, steeling herself.

''Thank goodness you're here!'' Edward exclaimed. ''They won't let me open the confounded thing, just because it's addressed to you!''

''Well, then, give it to me.'' Monica sighed.

She looked at the telegram, her eyes clouding over, and stalked out of the house...

Emily looked in the rearview-mirror of her little black Jeep Wrangler, sighing in relief at seeing that she was well past the state-line, and that she was well past the state-line. She looked at Juan, in the backseat sleeping, and sighed... She had a long couple of weeks ahead of her...

Lucky and Luke were at the club, shooting some pool, when Monica Quartermaine stormed in.

''What can I do ya for, Mon?'' Luke grinned, taking a long pull of his beer.

Monica reached into her purse in annoyance, grabbed the note, and shoved it towards Lucky. ''What does it mean?''

''I... oooh... she split with Juan, huh?'' he said, successfully hiding his surprise.

''You don't know where she is?'' she challenged. ''You are her best friend. I figured he would tell you...''

''Uh, nope. Sorry...''

''Uh, okay...'' she said, reluctantly pocketing her letter. ''I... I'd better go to home and call the police...''

Luke looked as if he might say something as she was leaving, but Lucky shook his head, stopping him. As the door shut, he looked at his son in shock.

''You want the fuzz in on this?''

''They won't ever find her, Pop.'' he informed him, shaking his head.

''Oh? What makes you so sure?''

''When we ran away before, I... I taught her a few tricks...'' he admitted, running his fingers through his hair.

''Tricks?'' Luke echoed.

''Uh... yeah... The, uh, telegram; she sent it instead of writing a note, to give herself time to get across the state line, so the police would be out of their jurisdiction...''

Chapter Three

Sieze upon the moment long ago.
One breath away and there you will be,
so young and carefree.
Again you will see,
that place and time, so gold.

Emily wrapped her arms around herself as she stood in the open doorway staring at the night sky. Juan lay sleeping fretfully, clad only in his jeans. She looked at him, bathed in the moonlight, and watched the gentle rise and fall of his chest. She didn't know what she had thought she could do, but... she had no choice but to just... do it...

Steal away into that way back when.
You thought that all would last forever.
But, like the weather,
nothing can ever... and be in time,
stay gold.

Suddenly, he started writhing and moaning, as if he were in severe pain. Emily ran to him, putting a soothing hand on his forearm, her other on his chest. He was drenched in sweat, and seemed to buck the slightest touch.

''Juan, Juan... It's me...'' she said, shaking him gently.

''Emily?''

He looked at her, disoriented. She sounded so far away; he could barely see her...

''Help me... hold me... Please...'' he begged, reaching for her.

She fell into his embrace and they held on for dear life...

But, can it be,
when we can see,
so vividly
a memory.
And, yes you say,
so must the day,
too fade away
and leave a ray of sun,
so gold.

The early morning sunrise streamed in through the windows, prying Emily's eyes open as though with useen fingers...

She got up, yawning, and tried to stretch out the kinks without disturbing Juan. She looked at him, tangled in the sheets... it had been a hell of a night, that was for certain... Sighing, she padded softly across the floor to the shower...

Life is but a twinkling of an eye.
Yet filled with sorrow and compassion.
Though not imagined,
all things that happen
will age to old.
Though gold...

Chapter Four

Luke's private pool-room had five participants this morning. Lucky, Luke, Sonny, Mike, and Jason. They were all gathered, sitting around, trying to figure out this situation with Emily...

''Okay,'' Jason sighed, ''what've we got so far?''

''She ran away.'' Luke reminded.

Jason shot him a dirty look.

''Well... maybe she's not pregnant...'' Lucky mused to himself.

''What do you mean, 'maybe'?!''

Lucky backed up instinctively as four pair of eyes leveled good glares at him. ''I said maybe...'' he defended.

''You'd better start explaining now.'' Jason demanded, narrowing his eyes at him.

Lucky sighed, meeting Jason's gaze. ''They've been sleeping together for a while now... So, that could be a possibility of why---''

''How long?'' Jason gritted out.

''Uh... it was his Valentine's Day present?''

Jason's eyes turned to two pools of flaming ice, as he clenched his fists tightly, and his jaw-muscle started twitching...

Luke almost busted out laughing... but he didn't dare... Even he didn't want to tangle with Morgan when he was pissed-off...

Mike and Sonny stayed on the sidelines, ready to jump in at a second's notice, should Jason go off...

''How... how do you know this?'' Jason managed, reaching for the shot-glass Luke offered him.

''She confides in me.'' he admitted. ''We talk about everything.''

''What else did she tell you?''

''You want to know more than that?'' Lucky questioned, quirking an eyebrow.

''No,'' he admitted, ''but I probably should...''

''Okay...'' he shrugged. ''I told her the sponge was good...'' he said, trying hard to keep the corners of his mouth from twitching.

At this, Luke couldn't help it... he started laughing, despite the looks he was recieving from Jason, and Sonny & Mike were staring in openmouthed shock...

''Uh... that's enough...'' he said, holding up a hand. ''I... I don't want to hear anymore.'' he stated, with a look that Lucky took as ''shut up now!''...

''Uh... I'll have that drink now Luke...'' Sonny said, clearing his throat nervously.

Sonny shakes his head at the offered glass, and just takes the bottle, taking a massive slug. Mike makes a face at his son, reaching for the bottle himself...

Chapter Five

I've been alone with you
inside my mind.
And, in my dreams I've kissed your lips
a thousand times.
I sometimes see you pass outside my door.
Hello, is it me you're looking for?

Lucky shot straight up on the sofa, drenched in sweat and gasping for air. Concerned, Luke went to him, putting a calming arm around him.

''Ya okay, Cowboy?''

''Pop?'' Lucky asked, not really looking at him.

''Yeah, kid, I'm here.'' Luke soothed.

''Emily...''

''You had a nightmare about Emily?'' Luke guessed.

''Yeah... so real... Dad, he hit her... It was like I could feel it...''

I can see it in your eyes,
I can see it in your smile.
You're all I've ever wanted,
and my arms are open wide.
'Cause, you know just what to say,
and, you know just what to do.
And, I want so much to tell you,
I love you.

Emily sat at the table, clad in Juan's shirt, holding an ice-pack to her cheek. It wasn't him; she knew that... He hadn't meant it...

Sliding out of the bed, he came up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist.

Relaxing, she allowed him to nuzzle her gently and carry her back to the bed. Sighing softly, she wondered if she really could handle this on her own... What had she gotten herself into?

I long to see the sunlight in your hair,
and tell you time and time again,
how much I care.
I sometimes feel my heart will overflow.
Hello, I've just got to let you know.

After convincing Lucky to go back to sleep, Luke walked into the room with the others, visibly shaken.

''Somethin' wrong?'' Sonny questioned.

''Yeah... Lucky... he had a bad dream... that princess was hit...''

''You guys don't honestly believe that Juan would... he wouldn't!'' Sonny sputtered, obviously offended.

''Dunno, but... it just seemed so real to him... And, Lucky ain't the type to get shook up by dreams; that's what's botherin' me... What if it's Spencer-instinct kickin' in?''

''You've been hangin' around Lucy Coe too long.'' Mike scoffed.

Jason didn't say a word, but his eyes clouded over with dread...

'Cause, I wonder where you are.
And, I wonder what you do.
Are you somewhere feeling lonely,
or, is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart,
for I haven't got a clue.
But, let me start by saying,
''I love you."

Hello, is it me you're looking for?

Tossing and turning in the big bed, Emily's eyes popped open and she whispered one word...

''Lucky...''

'Cause, I wonder where you are.
And, I wonder what you do.
Are you somewhere feeling lonely,
or, is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart,
for I haven't got a clue.
But, let me start by saying,
''I love you.''

Chapter Six

Lucky ran his hands through his hair, sighing.

''This is all my fault, Dad...''

''What?'' Luke asked, confused.

''My fault.'' he repeated. ''First Lizzie, now Em...''

''Lizzie?''

''Dad, the stress of my 'dying' and 'coming back from the dead' sent her over the edge! She's bunkin' with Julie Devlin for heaven's sakes!''

''Lucky...'' he began gently, ''that's not your fault...''

''Oh, no? She's not even allowed visitors!''

Sighing, he dropped his face in his hands.

''What about Emily? Hell, Pop, I practically gave her my blessing on sleeping with the guy!''

''Thought ya didn't particularly like him?''

''I don't!'' he exclaimed. ''I... I just... I figured she'd do it with or without my approval, at least she'd be smarter about it if I gave her some advice...''

''Then, you were just lookin' out for---''

''No.''

''No?''

''Uh-uh... Why didn't I just tell her to dump him?''

''Cowboy... this can't keep blamin' yourself for stuff ya can't control... Believe-you-me, I know...''

Lucky nodded, and Luke ruffled his hair, gently caressing the back of his head, and left him to his thoughts.

A few minutes later, Jason came in, pulling up a chair next to Lucky's window-seat.

''Hey, kid.''

''Oh, hey.'' he said unenthusiastically, looking up.

''Somethin' wrong?''

''Nah... it's just... I'm sorry, man.''

''Sorry? What for?''

''Emily. I... You know about me practically givin' her the go-ahead to... uh... ya know...''

Jason made a face, but didn't seem particularly mad, which surprised Lucky.

''Well, not that I want her... doing that...'' he began uncomfortably, ''but, um... at least you were able to advise her... Hell, at least she had you to talk to... She needs to know to be smart, and...''

Lucky took up his train of thought as he trailed off.

''And, better me than you?''

''Exactly.'' he nodded, smiling slightly. ''Well, I'm gonna go get a beer, ya want anything?''

''No thanks; I'm just gonna stay in here a few more minutes...''

Jason nodded, and left him to contemplate things again...

Chapter Seven

She follows the path
of least resistance.
She doesn't care to see
the mountain-top.
She twists and turns
with no regard to distance.
She never comes to a stop.

Emily looked at Juan in a new light. She finally was starting to realize what her family had gone through when she overdosed.

''They must be really worried about me...'' she realized.

''Juan, I'm begining to wonder if you want to get better.'' she spat.

''I'm begining to wonder why you're bothering.'' he retorted wearily.

And she rolls,
she's a river.
Where she goes,
time will tell.
Heaven knows,
he can't go with her.
And she rolls,
all by herself.
All by herself.

She looked at him incredulously. ''You just hit the nail on the head, bucko!''

''Huh?''

''Why am I here? Why even bother with a hopeless case, huh? Did you ever consider that it was because I loved you? Did you ever for one second consider that maybe I know what you're going through?''

''Oh, what, I'm ungrateful, right? Is this about me, or because you feel guilty about what happened with you when you OD?''

He's headed for
a single destination.
He doesn't care what's
standing in his path.
He's a line between
two points of seperation.
He ends just where
it says to on the map.

Brown eyes flashing, she grabbed the juice-pitcher and took aim for his head! Fortunately, he ducked and she hit just above him, splattering orange-juice all over the wall, and knocking shards of glass everywhere...

''What'd you do that for?! Are you nuts?!''

''I'm begining to think so...''

And he rolls,
he's a highway.
Where he goes,
time will tell.
Heaven knows,
she can't go with him.
And he rolls,
all by himself.
All by himself.

Juan looked at her sorrowfully. ''I... I'm sorry...''

He fell to the bed, clutching his head in his hands.

''I don't want to be like this... I don't want to hurt you... I'm so scared of hurting you badly, and having no control...'' he sobbed.

''I know you're suffering, and I know this isn't your fault... Heck, I even realize you don't mean to act the way you do...'' she admitted, sighing heavily. ''But, I don't know how much more I can take...'' she added silently to herself.

And, every now and then
he offers her a shoulder.
And, every now and then,
she overflows.
And, every now and then,
a bridge crosses over.
It's a moment that
every lover knows.

Going to him, she wrapped him in a comforting embrace, and he held on tight, as though she were his anchor. Stroking his hair, she rocked him comfortingly, as if a mother with a sick child. Why did this have to happen? She couldn't help but feel that in some small way that it was her fault, for talking him into the singing career, and refused to judge him, considering her past history...

And she rolls,
(and he rolls)
she's a river.
(he's a higway)
Where she goes
(where he goes)
time will tell.
(time will tell)
Heaven knows,
she can't go with him.
(he can't go with her)
And, she rolls
all by herself.
And, he rolls
all by himself.
Fare thee well...
