Chapter Twenty-Two


January 5th
11:15 p.m.
PC Airport, Port Charles, NY


Sonny walked off the plane into the airport and saw Jason standing a few feet from the exit ramp. Not long ago he was in this very airport waiting with Emily for Jason; Sonny let his mind wander to how exited, nervous, and beautiful Emily had looked that night. The memory brought a smile to his face. “Jason,” he said in greeting.

“Sonny,” Jason said after a quick embrace. “Johnny’s handling the bags,” he said as the two headed out of the airport. “How was the flight?”

“Fine. Everything run smoothly while I was gone?”

Jason nodded, “Business was fine. Benny was worried you’d never come back.”

“Benny’s always worried about something,” Sonny commented as they reached the limo. After getting in he asked about their insurance policy.

“I know Sorel has men looking. They got close once. I checked for leaks, but everyone turned out clean. It must have been dumb luck but I had him moved anyway.”

“Good,” Sonny replied. He heard the slam of the trunk and watched Johnny walked to the front of the car. They sat there in a silence that was comfortable, both knowing that they didn’t have to fill it with useless talk. “How is Michael?”

A smile came to Jason’s blue eyes, “He’s good. He loves kindergarten. His teacher says he’s the brightest in the class.”

“Doesn’t surprise me. And married life,” Sonny finally asked. He expected to feel some kind of pain at hearing how happy Carly was with another man, even if it was Jason. But listening to Jason talking about how good things were going and seeing the light in his eyes as he talked about the family he loved so much, Sonny did not feel the hurt. A part of him was jealous, he wanted what Jason had; a wife, kids…family. But, to his utter surprise hearing about Carly did not pain him has it once had. Sonny would find it a relief if it didn’t mean the possibility that Emily had caught heart. Sighing, he asked about V because he wasn’t yet ready to hear about Emily.

“She’s living with Jax.”

“What? That fast! I’ve only been gone a little over month?”

“Well she hadn’t planned on it so soon but she was getting some threatening letters.”

Sonny’s brow furrowed, he could feel his anger rising. Women were meant to be loved and protected not frightened or hurt. “Have you looked into it?”

“Yeah, but I haven’t had any luck yet. I don’t like Jax much but at least he is taking precautions.”

“Good…what was that you mumbled?”

“Carly and V have been forcing us to endure diner once a week with each other.”

Sonny couldn’t help the laughter that escaped. The idea of Jason having dinner with Jax was too much. “Carly and V do all the talking?”

“Pretty much,” Jason grumbled.

“So how Emily,” Sonny finally asked.

Jason shook his head. “I told her St. Catherine’s was too far away. Elizabeth told me that she, Lucky, Nikolas and Gia together get about 15 emails from her a day. Not to mention the hour-long phone calls to the family. She calls me every night at nine. I know what she felt like now while I was gone, waiting by the phone hoping it will ring. Carly laughs at me because if she’s even running five minutes late I start to worry. She says I practically jump on the phone when it rings.”

Sonny heard the news not quite comprehending it. Could what Jason said be true, was she gone? And why did that thought stop his heart from beating? “So the Quartermaines sent her to boarding school?”

“They couldn’t send her anywhere. Emily wanted to go, they have some writing program that’s suppose to be the best in the country.”

Country, Sonny thought. “Where is St. Catherine’s?”

“California.”

Sonny felt his heart sink…she was on the other side of the country. While his head was telling him it was for the best…she was too young and Jason’s sister; his heart would not listen.



PC Hotel


V snuggled closer to Jax. How he pulled it off she didn’t know, but Jax had his ways. And while she knew she should be annoyed with him, the gesture was just too sweet for her to be. She had wanted to go out and see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because Carly and Emily, who went to see it without her which still upset her, raved about it; but Jax been concerned because the letters were coming more frequently and were becoming worse. So while they were down at the Grill having an early dinner, Jax had the penthouse turned into the theater complete with popcorn, candy and surround sound.

The credits rolled up the screen and Jax ran a hand through V’s shoulder length golden red hair. “Did you enjoy the movie?”

“It was beautiful” V replied. “We should do this more often you know,” she told him turning her face up to his.

Jax smiled down at her. “So does that mean you’re not angry?”

V chuckled, “Maybe…”

“Maybe,” Jax asked rising an eyebrow.

V smiled at him. “Well it was kind of nice having my own private theater so you score points on that.”

“I wasn’t aware I was trying to scoring points.”

“Guys are always trying to score points,” V remarked.

“Really?”

“Yes,” she said in an exaggerated manner. “Why else do you buy us flowers for no reason, or set up private movie theaters?” Jax opened and closed his mouth a few times, damn it if she wasn’t right. “See,” V said.

“You’re right,” Jax huffed somewhat disgusted.

“Aw poor baby,” V teased. She was about to say something else when Jax silenced her jests with a kiss. He pulled her on top of him and wrapped his arms around her, bring her closer.

V ran her hands up his arms before beginning to unbutton his shirt. She wiggled her way out of his arms and broke the kiss so she could pull his shirt from his pants. “So do you want to know how to score big?”

“Is it me or is there a double meaning in that,” Jax asked pushing her dress up her legs.

V smiled wickedly at him, “There could be. But what I’m think of would make two women happy.”

“Really? I haven’t tried that before.”

“Jax,” V exclaimed her cheeks turning pink. Jax laughed at her embarrassment. V took a moment to stop her task and swat a hand at him. “Behave!”

“I wouldn’t call this behaving,” Jax replied. “I’ll send Alexis over the popcorn machine tomorrow,” he said reading her mind before he pulled her close again and kissed her.



Quartermaine Mansion


Chloe looked down at her latest note and smiled. It was such fun seeing the terror in V’s eye whenever she asked if she had gotten a new letter. She got such twisted enjoyment offering V a friendly shoulder when she was the one sending the letters. Chloe read over note, once again making sure there wasn’t anything else she wanted to add.

Chloe’s laughter filled the room. Yes, this note was sure to upset V and then she’d need her good friends to help comfort her.



Brownstone, Carly and Jason’s Apartment


Jason slipped into bed as quietly as he could so not to disturb Carly. “Jas,” her sleepy voice filled the room as she moved over towards him.

Jason wrapped his arm around her shoulders while Carly slid hers over his well-muscled stomach. “I’m here,” he replied and kissed her forehead.

“You’re late,” she muttered in a state between wakefulness and sleep.

“Sorry. We had some business to discuss,” he running a hand through her hair long silken tresses.

Carly loved the feeling of someone hands in her hand and curled closer to Jason. “Sonny okay?”

Jason thought a moment, when he had spoken of Carly and Michael Sonny did not get that far away look of hurt in his eyes. Did that mean he was finally all right with how things could turn out? “Yeah.”

“Good. I’m still going to mad at you in the morning though,” she told him, she was losing the battle to stay awake.

Jason smiled, “I’ll remind you if you want me too.”

“Smart ass,” Carly grumbled before she drifted back to sleep in Jason’s arms.

“I love you too,” Jason replied before he drifted off to sleep as well.



Emily’s Journal


Eureka, California. What a strange name for a small costal city in California. An even stranger place for a world-class school to be located. I sound ungrateful don’t I? I wanted to be far way form Port Charles and a certain person there. Only Alaska and Hawaii are further away! Alaska is too cold; besides Eureka has a beautiful beach of its own, so eat your heart out Hawaii!

I guess I just still miss home. I miss waking up to have breakfast with Grandmother. I miss Mom and Dad wishing me a good day before I leave. I miss hanging out with Lucky, Elizabeth, Nikolas and Gia. I miss seeing my brothers, yes brothers, everyday. And though I hate to say this, I think I miss Jas more then AJ, does that make me a bad sister? I miss playing with Michael. I even miss Carly!

The last two weeks at home had been so much fun! Shopping with V and Carly. Hanging out with my friend, especially Lucky. He made a special day for just the two of us; sometimes I can still taste the purple popsicles that he bought. And of course there was New Year’s Eve. It really was a great going away party. The family barely fought. It was so sweet of them to be on their there best behavior.

I guess there isn’t a person or thing in Port Charles that I don’t miss, including the person I shouldn’t be missing. God, this sounds cryptic! Its not like I have to be afraid that Mom will read my journal or anything anymore, it is 3,000 miles out of her reach! So I’ll do it…I miss Sonny. I miss him dreadfully.

I still think about that dream I had a while go. It scares me as much at it excites me. But who am I kidding there is way too much standing in our way. Age, family, his past and my insecurities. Besides if we were meant to be he would have come home before I left and stopped me. At the airport I kept thinking that he’d show up. I mean how could he not know I was leaving, he kept in touch with Jason and he had to tell him.

He was probably waiting until I left to come home. At least I can be grateful that he spared me another talk. The last thing I need to hear is how much he still loves Carly.





Chapter Twenty-Three


Emily’s Journal


February 2

Home still feels so far away. Email is fast but no real connection, telephone is better but it makes me long for home more then just hearing someone’s voice, I long to see everyone.

Valentine’s Day cannot come soon enough. True I have no guy to celebrate with, but thanks to the Cassadine jet Lucky, Elizabeth, Nikolas and Gia will be here for the weekend. It will be so great to sit and laugh with them again. Plus there are certain things that I need to talk about in person.

Lucky said time and space would work. Meeting new people and adjusting into a new school would take my mind of a certain tall, dark dangerous man. Yeah right! If anything I’ve become more obsessed then ever. Sonny’s always on my mind like that the stupid song goes.

I go over it almost every moment. The day at the beach, the night he cooked me dinner, our first kiss and then that last explosive moment we where together. God what I wouldn’t give to hit the cosmic rewind button and stop Carly from bursting in that day. But see there’s my problem. I’m not thinking. Sonny loves Carly, he told me so himself. Whatever that night was about it was not about him loving me. Sure he cares about me in the absent, brotherly way. But I’m a seventeen year-old nothing. What could he possibly see in me?



Alexis’s Penthouse, Harbor View Towers


“It’s never going to work,” V stated.

“Of course it will,” Carly argued.

“You’re dreaming,” V remarked as she threw popcorn at her best friend.

“Hey! Hey! Don’t waste that,” Alexis snapped snatching the bowl of popcorn from V.

“Chill out Alexis. It was only a few kernels,” Carly pointed out.

“You forget that it is worth a mountain of gold to her,” Chloe stated before dipping her hand into the bowl.

“I still say it can work,” Alexis said bring the conversation back on track.

“Wouldn’t you rather have Ned all to yourself,” V asked.

“No.”

“V does have a point. Why should I share my husband with you guys on the most romantic night of the year,” Carly asked.

“I thought we covered this early,” Alexis sighed.

“Well Lucy start explaining it again,” Chloe cracked.

“I think I like Natasha better,” Alexis muttered.

“What was that,” Carly inquired.

“Nothing,” Alexis sated, passing the bowl to Carly. “Okay again. The four of us are friends.”

“Check.”

“But none of our significant others get along all that well.”

“You can say that again,” V remarked.

“But none of our…”

Chloe playfully hit Alexis with a pillow, “She was kidding.”

“Who knew Alexis had sense of humor,” Carly said ruefully.

Alexis rolled her eyes, “Can I please continue.” She bit back her laughter, watching them all shake there heads yes; they reminded her of the bobbing head dolls. “Right, hum. Now Jason and Ned are fam…”

“Related by blood,” Carly cut in.

“Whatever you want to call it. Now Jax and Ned are friends,” Alexis continued.

“Though they never admit it,” V added.

“Ain’t that the truth,” Chloe agreed.

“So explain to me why Sonny needs to be there,” Carly requested.

“Well Sonny is my biggest client and well kind of, on my you know my bad days he is my friend,” Alexis mumbled the last few words.

“Wanna say that again I couldn’t understand you,” Carly asked.

“Don’t tease her,” V scolded.

“Well she’s going to have to admit it out loud one of these days,” Carly pointed out.

“It doesn’t look like it will be today,” Chloe remarked, while Alexis snatched the bowel of popcorn from Carly. “Besides I need someone to talk too while you all are being lovey-dovey.”

“I still don’t like the idea of sharing my husband,” Carly insisted. “Hey,” she called when she was hit with pillows. “I take it you all agree then,” she asked straighten her hair.

“Duh it was my idea,” Alexis answered.

“I guess,” V agreed.

“I’m all for it,” Chloe state. “So Carly?”

“All right, but if any of you makes a move on man,” she said playfully. Instead of pillows, Alexis dumped the whole bowl of popcorn over her head.



Sonny’s Penthouse, Harbor Towers


Sonny pushed the paperwork in front of him away in frustration. It had been almost a month, he thought rubbing his temples, and nothing. No note, no call, no letter. Why? Did Emily hate him that much?

Sonny knew it was ridiculous to think that, but he couldn’t help it. They had never really settled things and now three thousand miles apart it felt like they never would.

He had been tempted, oh so very tempted to fly out there and talk to her. But it seemed to extreme. Then again sitting around doing nothing was just an extreme on the opposite side of the spectrum. Maybe I should write her or send her flowers? Or do anything to let her know I thinking about her, Sonny thought. But then maybe it was best if she forgot about their few stolen moments and moved on to some regular guy so she could have a normal life. If the very idea didn’t hurt him so much maybe could let her do it, but Sonny learned one thing about himself, he was selfish.





Chapter Twenty-Four


February 5
Sonny’s Penthouse


“Sonny I don’t think leaving again so soon is such a good idea,” Jason said trying to get through to his friend.

“It’s important.”

“Sonny the trial is less then a month away. We can’t risk anything happening now.”

“I trust you to handle it,” Sonny replied.

“Sonny,” Jason started but was interrupted by the knock at the door.

Johnny stepped into the room, “Miss Davis,” he announced.

“Let her in,” Sonny told his guard. Johnny nodded. “We’ll finish this later.”

“Fine,” Jason replied slightly annoyed. “Alexis,” he greeted before leaving.

“Did I interrupt something?”

“Don’t worry about it. So what can I do for you today counselor?”

“Well there are some contracts that needed your signature…” Sonny looked at her expectantly. “I don’t have them on me.”

“Oh…then what did you need?”

“To ask you…well its sort of…do you have plans for Valentine’s Day?”

Sonny eyed her for a minute, “Listen Alexis you’re a great lawyer and friend but…”

“I’m not asking for a date,” Alexis snapped. Sonny tried to bit back his laughter at her annoyance and embarrassment. “I am in a happy, devoted,” she stressed, “relationship with Ned!”

“Then why are you asking me out?”

“You’re doing that on purpose!”

“Maybe,” Sonny retorted a dimpled smile spread across his face.

“Wise Ass,” Alexis muttered.

“What was that,” Sonny asked highly amused by her.

“So do you have plans or not?”

“Well not really, I kind of…”

“Perfect! You’re going out with Carly, V, Chloe, Jason, Ned, Jax and myself.”

“In whose reality?”

Alexis’s eyes slanted in anger. “You’re coming with us,” she said through gritted teeth.

“Alexis I planned on being out of town…”

“Is it important?”

“Well…”

“See no direct yes which means it can wait.”

“Damn, Alexis,” Sonny swore slightly irritated, “it is important.”

“Then let me put it this way. Come or I quit.”

“You can’t mean that.”

“Well I do! I’ve had it up to here,” she raised her hand above her head for a visual, “with the people I care about not standing with each other.”

“You care about me,” Sonny asked playfully.

“Shut up,” Alexis sighed, “and answer the question.”

Sonny rolled his shoulders, he hated putting off his trip to see Emily, but he could tell that this was important to Alexis. He had been waiting for over a month, another few days was nothing. “Fine.”

A brilliant smile touched Alexis’s face, “Good. I’ll be back later with the contracts,” she said leaving.

“Alexis?”

“Yes,” she said turning back to him.

“You owe me.” Alexis nodded and slipped out the door. Sighing Sonny walked over to the phone and dialed.

“Morgan Residence,” Carly’s merry voice answered the phone. It was not longer a sucker punch to his gut, hearing her voice – so happy and unattainable. In truth, Sonny was glad that Carly finally had the person and family she wanted.

“Carly,” he said in greeting. “How are you?”

“I’m good,” she replied feeling a bit awkward.

“And Michael?”

“Perfect as always.”

“Good. Is Jason there?”

“Yeah, hang on a minute.” Sonny heard her muffled voice call out. A moment later Jason’s voice filled his ear.

“Everything is fine,” Sonny assured Jason.

“What did Alexis need?”

“Have you been filled in on Valentine’s Day,” Sonny inquired.

“No.”

Sonny smiled, “I'll let Carly fill you in. I just wanted to let you know that I’ll be in town for a while longer.”

“Good. I’ll see you tomorrow at the warehouse,” Jason said. He listened to Sonny farewell, before going to hunt down his wife and find out what was going on.


St. Catherine’s, Eureka, California
Emily’s Room


“You didn’t,” Emily squealed over the phone.

“You should have seen the look on the girl’s face,” Elizabeth added, filling in the description that Gia had left out.

“That will teach her to flirt with my man,” Gia said enjoying again the visual of the blonde covered in tomato soup.

Emily was so grateful for the three-way line that her parents had specially installed for her. Talking to Gia and Elizabeth together like this was so great. “I wish I could have been there.”

“You could always come home,” Elizabeth reminded her.

“Stop that Elizabeth,” Gia scolded, “you promised no more nagging.”

“Can I help it if I miss my best friend?”

“What am I chopped liver,” Gia asked with mock offense.

“Enough you two.”

“But we’re just getting started,” Elizabeth teased.

“Be that as it may. I’ve got to get to a study session in fifteen minutes and I still have to check my email.”

“Is that your way of dismissing us,” Gia asked.

“Want me to be ruder,” Emily asked mischievously.

“No,” Elizabeth cried. “Talk to you later Em,” she said before hanging up.

Emily heard the wet sound of Gia sticking out her tongue before she hung up. Laughing, she got up from her bed where she had been sprawled, and went to the computer. Logging on took a few minutes, so she packed up her stuff. The electronic voice she lived to hear filled her room…“You’ve got mail.”

Smiling Emily flopped down in her desk chair. Three new messages where in her in box. One from Edward, which could wait till later, a school announcement, which she just deleted and one from Lucky. Excited, she clicked the message open. Lucky always started his messages as if the conversation was already taking place, Emily loved that.

I find that not having my bratty best friend around can be a lot of fun. It gives my girlfriend more time to hang with me.

We all know I suck at keeping secrets so you won’t hear from me again until I walk off the plane. I will be screening my calls; so don’t bother trying to weasel it out of me Quartermaine. I…well we have surprise for you.

Emily reread the message twice. A surprise! What could it be? Damn Lucky for piquing her interest and leaving her hanging. Emily knew she wouldn’t get anything for everyone else. A devious smiled spread across her face. Knowing that it would cause her to be late, Emily hopped online. Going to her bookmarks, she slid down the list and clicked on payback. She had been saving it for a time to yank Lucky’s chain, now was perfect she thought. A few minutes later Emily finished the purchased, laughing she hurried to the library. In a few days Lucky would be a proud owner of a worm farm once again.





Chapter Twenty-Five


Friday, February 13
St. Catharine’s, Eureka, CA


Emily zipped up her bag and checked the time, 4:15. Yep, she defiantly had enough time to get to the airport to meet the plane.

“Emily,” Katie called as she opened the door.

“Hey,” Emily greeted turning and smiling at her new friend.

“Packed already,” Katie teased.

“I’ve been counting the hours.”

“You’re so lucky. I wish my parents would pull strings to get me a weekend pass,” Katie cried flinging herself onto the bed.

“You just went home last weekend!”

“Yeah, home to them. Not a weekend with friends. Some poor little rich kids get all the luck.”

Laughter escaped Emily. She threw a pillow a Katie, “And some poor little rich kids only know how to complain.”

“That was a disparaging remark!”

“So sue me for emotional distress,” Emily joked.

“Oh I’m sure Daddy would love that,” Katie said dryly.

Emily pouted mockingly, “I’ll bring you back a present.”

“Cute,” Katie replied throwing the pillow at Emily. “Just have fun this weekend.”

“I will.”

“And I want details,” Katie reminded her.

“Please like I’ll have any details to give.”

“You never know, you could meet price charming tonight.”

“I have better chances at being abducted by aliens,” Emily retorted.

“This is California supposedly it happens all the time,” Katie remarked.

“You’re too much,” Emily said hoisting her bag up onto her shoulder. Making playful comments and giggling Katie walked Emily down to the cab. Emily threw her bag in the trunk and said goodbye.

“Don’t do anything illegal,” Katie said as the cab began to drive off.

“No promises,” Emily yelled jokingly as she waved.



Port Charles, NY
Brownstone, Morgan Apartment


Jason sat at the kitchen table holding Michael, who was playing with one of his planes, in his arms. “Are you sure I can’t help,” he asked a frazzled Carly.

“Its just dinner,” Carly reminded him as she stirred the bubbling spicy red sauce.

“I know. I feel like I should be helping somehow.”

Carly look at him over her shouldered and smiled. “How kind of you,” she said stealing part of a line from her secret all time favorite movie My Fair Lady “but I can handle it,” she assured him. Carly went back to preparing dinner; she had just put the water to boil when the phone rang. “If its Sonny tell him you’re busy.”

“Its not. I told him not to disturb us tonight,” Jason replied setting Michael in his chair. He answered the phone on the third ring. “Morgan residence.”

“Jason, dear,” Lila’s sweet voice carried over the phone.

A smile spread across Jason’s face, “Hello Grandmother.”

“Tell Lila I said hello. Shoot,” Carly screeched when she burned her hand.

“Is everything all right,” Lila inquired.

“Carly is just having some trouble making dinner.”

“How lovely a home cooked meal is the best. You’ll make sure so doesn’t do any permanent damage.”

“Of course,” Jason said somewhat distracted by the muffled curses Carly was muttering as she banged the pots and pans around for revenge.

“Good, now I called to invite you, Carly and Michael over next weekend for tea.”

“Grandmother…”

“I’ve already arranged so that your Grandfather and Father won’t be home.”

“I'll have to check with Carly, but we should be able to make it.”

“Wonderful. Have a lovely meal dear and give Carly and Michael my love.”

“I will Grandmother,” Jason replied before hanging up the phone. In jerky movements Carly was spreading the garlic butter onto the Italian bread. “Here,” he said coming behind her, his arms wrapped around her and Jason grabbed her hands. “Let me,” he asked again.

Carly pouted, “I wanted to this for you and Michael.”

“You don’t have to do anything but be yourself and love me and Michael.”

“That’s easy enough,” Carly sighed. She let Jason have the knife and the bread. After giving him a through kiss, Carly picked up Michael and they watched Jason finish the meal.

As Jason drained the noodles, Carly put Michael back in his chair and put his bib on him. Jason handed her the bottle of red wine she had been letting breath and she poured two glasses. Sitting down again, Carly watched how easily Jason performed the domestic task; frankly she was a tiny bit jealous at how easy he made it look.

After giving Michael his bowl, Jason set his and Carly’s plate down on the table. Sitting down next to her and reach out and stroked her cheek. “It smells wonder. Thank you.”

“Thank you for helping,” Carly replied squeezing his hand.

Jason nodded, “Shall we?”

“First,” Carly said picking up her glass, “to us.”

“To us,” Jason said as their glasses clicked.



PC Hotel, Penthouse


“Are you sure I can’t talk you out of this,” Jax asked pulling V close to him.

V smiled and closed her eyes; she loved the feel of Jax’s strong arms holding her. “Not a chance,” she replied opening her eyes.

“I’ll let Carly redecorate,” Jax bribed. V and Carly had been trying for over a week to convince him.

“Let her,” V said annoyed.

“Wrong choice of words.”

V turned in Jax arms her eyes shimmered with irritation. “You think?”

“V,” Jax sighed. “Please don’t make me go tomorrow. Its bad enough having dinner with Jason, but Sonny.”

“Is it me or are you whining?”

“I don’t whine.”

V bit back a smile; she could tell she hit a nerve. “You owe me?”

“How’s that?”

“You just told me that you’d let my best friend redecorate my home.”

“Our home,” Jax reminded her. “Besides you want her too!”

“That’s not an excuse. We’re going!”

“V…”

“Nope we’re going.”

“Then Carly can’t redecorate,” Jax said putting his foot down. V turned so he would not see her victorious smile; she and Carly had cooked up that scheme just to trap Jax into going to dinner.

“Where is he,” Emily asked after she greeted Nikolas, Elizabeth and Gia.

“On the plane with you’re surprise,” Gia teased.

“What is it,” Emily begged.

“Nope, we’re under strict orders. Now close your eyes,” Nikolas ordered.

“Excuse me,” Emily exclaimed.

“Just do it Em or Lucky is never coming off the plane,” Elizabeth told her.

“Fine,” Emily huffed. She closed her eyes and she felt someone place their hands over them. “Hey!”

“Just to make sure,” Nikolas told her.

“He’s going to get it.”

Gia giggled, “I think you accomplished that with the worm farm. He freaked when he got it.”

A grin of delight spread over Emily’s face. “Good.”

“That’s cruel Quartermaine,” Lucky said.

“Finally,” Emily cried squirming to get way from Nikolas.

“Wait,” Lucky told her taking her arm.

“Spencer…”

“Trust me its worth it,” Lucky assured her.

“It better be,” Emily muttered. She a wait a few more moments in darkness and then Nikolas lifted his hands from in front of her eyes.

“So am I worth the wait,” Sly asked.





Chapter Twenty-Six


Saturday, February 14
Alexis’s Apartment


Pleasant was not the way to describe the evening. Awful, terrible, painful, stressful, awkward - perhaps down right bad was the best way to go about it in the long run. Yes, Alexis thought the night was a complete bust.

Sonny of course had been charming which only irritated Ned and Jax. Jason barely said a word all night. Only answering someone when they asked him something directly and saying a few words to Carly and V.

And Ned and Jax, God it angered her just thinking about their behavior. They had been rude to Sonny and Ned had to spouse the virtues of the Quartermaines to Jason, as if they had any!

Well Ned and Jax were learning a lesson tonight. A smile spread over her face thinking about the two of them trapped in separate elevators across town from each other without even a sympathetic ear. A romantic evening was something neither of them were enjoying. Alexis picked up her bowl of buttered popcorn and a glass of white wine; heading upstairs she looked forward to slipping on her cotton-striped pajamas and looking over some briefs.



Morgan Residence


“I’m sorry about Ned,” Carly said slipping her dress off.

“You can’t control what other people do,” Jason replied.

“I know but I did force you into going,” Carly reminded him.

Jason grabbed her, pulled her towards him and wrapped his arms around her waist “Carly you didn’t force, you asked.”

“I know but...”

“No buts. Ned’s a jerk. I knew that going in. You wanted a nice evening with our friends and you deserved to have that. Besides I didn’t help.”

“True. That’s the most you’ve said all evening,” she remarked playfully.

“But I haven’t said what’s most important.”

“And what’s that?”

“I love you,” Jason said brushing a strand of hair from her face.

Carly’s eyes softened and she reached up to cup his face, “I love you too.” Jason leaned down and capture Carly’s lips in a passionate kiss. Wanting the feel of flesh against flesh Carly tugged at Jason’s shirt. Pulling it from his pants, she slid her hands up his torso making his muscles quiver. Jason pulled away from her a moment to tug the shirt over his head. Their lips met again in hungry passion. Hurriedly they made their way to the bed, dropping down onto the soft mattress, they sighed into each other.



Emily’s Journal


Monday, February 16

This weekend was full of surprises and now life seems completely off balance and perfect at the same time. Seeing Sly before my eyes still seems surreal. How long has it been since he had stood before me grinning like a fool? - a very handsome and grown up one at that! I wanted to drool. Tall, muscular - his blue-green eyes so deep with emotion and his somewhat long dark blonde hair blowing in the wind; it was like looking at the hero’s picture on the cover of a romance novel.

Sly fits the mold. The perfect hero. Kind, generous, smart, humorous and my age. I know just Lucky did this on purpose. He wants me to be happy and in love, but not with Sonny. Of course loving Sonny is not making me happy; more like miserable. Sly took me away from that! He flirted with me and saw me.

All day Saturday he hardly took his eyes off me. It was so weird feeling someone’s gaze on me. Exploring me; it was like he was trying to figure me out. What can I say a spell was cast.

A long time ago my Mother, my real Mom, bought a movie called Love in the Afternoon. At the time I assumed that it was only that one afternoon and found it stupid; you cannot fall in love in a moment and you cannot have a relationship that only lasts a day. How naive was I?

I think, no I am sure that Saturday afternoon I fell in love with Sly. With his quiet manners, soft eyes and worn hands. It was so wonderful walking through the park holding Sly’s hand; Lucky and Elizabeth and Nikolas and Gia walking beside - six friends and three pairs of lovers. I wonder if that is what people saw? Is the picture I see in my mind different than the actual one? Does it matter?

The afternoon was magical. Laughter, looks, stories and food. I do not think we ever really parted. An exaggeration yes, but that is how it felt. Like I never left Sly’s side. I felt like I never would want too.

Thoughts of Sonny were forgotten and so was the talk that I wanted to have with Lucky. What did it matter when my heart was swept away by Sly?

Saturday night I let him kiss me. It was soft at first, than in gained in passion. His lips became harder and his hands roamed. I wanted to stay there kissing him forever. I wanted the moment to freeze in time. So I could always be there, happy.

It ended of course and Sunday they flew home and I had to come back to school. Promises were made. We would call and write, he would wait and we would see. Loving Sly was like floating. So perfect. So easy. My bubble burst when I got back to school. Katie informed me that flowers were delivered for me. I had thought maybe Grandfather or Dad sent them to me, God how much easier life would be now if that was true.

The cobalt blue vase was waiting in my room. Sunflowers, wax flowers, roses of all colors, and Irises surround by baby’s breath. They took my breath away. The golden note inside nearly knocked me off my feet. The flowers were from Sonny.

I think I went into some kind of shock. There is no way to describe it really. I could not think, hear or speak; nor did I want too.

I wanted to tear up the note. Pretend that it did not exist. The balance that I had made with Sly, with my friends, my life would end. But how can I deny it? I do not really want too. I want Sonny.

He is all wrong for me. He is to old. My family will hate it. Jason, I hate to think what a relationship with Sonny would to him and their friendship.

And Sly. It is not like we have some life long commitment. Just a promise of what could be. It would be beautiful, loving with no complications. But I do not want easy. I want struggle, love and passion. Being with Sly would never be a struggle. The family would approve, my friends as well. Sly would never fight with me. What I want would go, he is too laid back to put up any fight. Perhaps Mom and Dad’s relation has warped me but I need a good fight every now and then.

Love would not really be an issue. Once Sly gave it I am sure that it would be for life. But it is the same with Sonny. He loves with everything he is; you can feel it radiate off him. Passion, Sonny definitely has Sly beat. Sly’s kisses were wonderful but no one excites me like Sonny.

Sonny - he is so loyal and brave, handsome and kind. So much older and experienced. He has all ready met and loved his soul mate. What could I be to him? A distraction for the rest of his life, perhaps?

God I hate this. There are so many questions. The most important though is Sonny or Sly. I keep going back to my childhood belief that love cannot happen in an afternoon. But it was in an afternoon that I gave Sonny my heart. That afternoon on the beach; building castles and playing in the water.

Maybe I give my heart too easily. But did I really give Sly my heart or did I fall into a dream that is all to perfect and easy? It is not hard to say I love Sly when I do as a friend. Could I live with just that? Just friendship?

I want more. I want Sonny.

He said for me to call or write. He made the first move but I am the one who has to decide. Do I risk my family’s disapproval, the hurt that it will cause Jason and Sly, and what will Lucky, Nikolas, Elizabeth and Gia think? What to do?

I keep staring at the phone. I was up all night looking at it. I want it to ring and have it be Sonny. I suppose I am being a chicken. It took a lot for Sonny to send the flowers. He is putting himself out there to be hurt.

Lack of sleep has me babbling. Thoughts are running in circles. My mind says one thing and my heart another. My Mother told me to always follow my heart.

I love Sonny.

I want Sonny.

I want to be with Sonny.

I want Sonny to love me.

I am going to call Sonny.

Tomorrow after I sleep. I will call Sonny and see where my heart leads me.



Friday, February 20
Sonny’s Apartment


It had been a week and nothing, Sonny thought sullenly as he poured himself a glass of whiskey. Was it foolish of him to think those moments between them had meant anything?

It was not like it could really work in the long run. Their age difference, the disapproval they would face, besides he had a way of shutting people out, of not telling them things. Dragging Emily into his life, into danger was wrong. It was better, Sonny was sure that she did not respond to his gesture. His heart would heal. It always had. But, God how he ached now.



On the Phone


“Why can’t you talk to me about it,” Carly asked her voice sounded distant because she was on her cell.

“Because I want to talk to V,” Emily replied.

“You know you can talk to me,” Carly insisted.

“I know. I appreciate that, really I do. But I need to talk to V in person. Can you please arrange a pass?”

“On one condition.”

"Which would be?”

“I want to surprise Jason,” Carly answered. “He doesn’t find out until you show up for dinner.”

“Agreed.”

“Good. So how do I go about getting you one?”



Saturday, February 21
PC Hotel


“V,” Emily called as she rushed forward towards the elevator.

“Emily,” V called in surprise, “what are you doing here?”

“I needed to speak to you,” Emily said giving her a quick hug.

“About what,” V asked looking down at her watch. She had to meet Carly for lunch.

“Well its complicated,” Emily replied. “I really don’t know who to talk to about it. I thought maybe...well our talks before always helped.”

V smiled at the young woman standing before her. “Can we talk and walk? I have to get to Kelly’s.”

“No problem,” Emily responded.

“So what do you need to talk about,” V asked as they started to walk out of the hotel.

“Well its kind of a guy problem,” Emily started.

They walked out the hotel doors into the bright sunlight. Paying attention to what Emily was saying V waved away the car. They would have more time to talk if they walked.

Neither noticed the glint of the metal from the building across the street. Chloe set her sights on V. Since Emily was so tall and was walking in step with V she continually got into her line of sight. Knowing that this would mostly likely be her only chance, Chloe decided it was worth the risk.

“So he’s older,” V asked as they approached the corner.

“Yeah. A lot older,” Emily confessed.

“How much is a lot,” V asked before confusion erupted around her. She heard the sound of a gun going off, two shots. The people on the streets started to scream and run for cover. V checked the perimeter looking on the sidewalks and buildings for the shooter, but was unable to see anyone. The guard Jax had hired was running towards her.

"Emily,” she asked. When V looked around she did not see Emily. It was not until the guard dropped to his knees a few feet from her that she saw Emily lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk.



Sonny’s Penthouse


“So the shipment should be here by Tuesday,” Jason informed a deathly quite Sonny.

“Good, good,” Sonny replied. Since he had given up all hope of being with Emily a depression had settle over him, though he would not admit it.

“Sonny are you all right?”

“Of course,” Sonny said setting down his drink and getting up from the couch. “It has just been a long week.”

Jason did not really believe him but the ringing of his cell phone stopped him from questioning him more. He nodded to Sonny to give him a minute and pressed the send button. “Morgan.”

“Jas,” Carly said in a choked voice.

“Carly is everything all right,” Jason asked concerned by the fear in her tone.

“No...”

“Are you okay? Michael?” As he asked Sonny moved closer to him to lend support.

“We’re fine,” Carly assured him.

“Then what’s the matter?”

“It’s bad Jas...”

“Carly just please tell me,” Jason stated flatly steeling himself for whatever she would say.

“I was waiting for V...we’re suppose to be having lunch. She was walking to Kelly’s with Emily...”

“Wait, Emily? How?”

“What’s going on with Emily,” Sonny asked, but Jason shook him off.

“She came home this morning we were going to surprise you...but...”

“Carly what’s happened to my sister?”

“She was shot. V thinks by her stalker...” Jason dropped his phone. He thought he had been prepared for any news, he was wrong.

Sonny heard Carly calling for Jason as he swiped up the phone. “Jason...Jas...come on please answer me...”

“Carly.”

“Sonny? How is Jason? You have to get him to GH.”

“Carly slow down! Tell me what the hell is going on,” Sonny demanded.

“Its Em. She’s been shot.” Sonny’s heart stopped and he closed his eyes as terror filled him. “Sonny,” Carly yelled.

“Yeah,” he replied in a distant voice opening his eyes to look at Jason.

“Get him there,” Carly asked. “Tell him I’ll be there soon.”

“Sure,” Sonny answered mechanically.

“Sonny...I know...well I don’t but...”

“We’ll be there soon,” he said before pressed the end button.



General Hospital
20 Minutes Later


Sonny watched as Jason paced the small confined space of the elevator as it took its time to get down to the ER. Sonny knew the time was not really right, but it had to be said. Knowing he was not going to like what he was about to do Sonny braced himself and pressed the emergency stop button. The elevator lurched.

“Sonny what the hell,” Jason asked as he slammed against the wall.

“I need to talk to you,” Sonny said.

“Now is not the time.”

“Yes it is. It has to be said,” Sonny told Jason and stepped in front of the control panel so Jason could not start the elevator.

“Sonny please I have to get to my sister.”

“I love her.”

“What? Sonny I know you still have feelings for Carly but now....”

“Not Carly. Emily. I love Emily and not like a little sister. I am in love with her,” Sonny confessed.

Jason’s faced hardened and his jaw popped as he clenched his teeth. “We’ll deal with this later,” he said coldly.

Sonny nodded, “I just wanted you to know,” he said and pushed the button to start the elevator moving again. They rode the rest of the way in silence.





Chapter Twenty-Seven


Sunday, February 22
PCPD


“Taggart please tell me that you have something to go on,” Mac asked as the detective entered his office. Mac had been fielding calls from Edward all night. Dealing with the eldest Quartermaine was not something he enjoyed, Edward was and always would be a pain.

Taggart ran a hand over his baldhead. He had a lead, in fact he had the shooter but Mac was not going to like it. “Well we were able to figure out the trajectory of shot and narrow it down to two buildings across the street. A parking garage and a bank. We figured the bank was less likely but we check it out anyhow. The security tapes showed it all clear.”

“So that leaves to parking complex. Are you sure there are no other locations?”

“Yes, sir.”

“You’ve check with their security?”

“Yes. The shooter disabled the camera closet to them, but we were able to pick them up on another. The owners installed an extra system recently to help against theft.”

“So we’ve got out shooter,” Mac sighed in relief. Taggart nodded, but said nothing else. A feeling of dread settled over Mac. “So what are we waiting for?”

“The shooter was Chloe Morgan.”

“That’s impossible. Emily is her family.”

“The target wasn’t Emily. It seems V has been getting letters. The most recent ones have been threatening.”

“Chloe doesn’t have motive,” Mac replied still in disbelief. Chloe was one of Felicia’s best friends, she had spent time with the girls - it was impossible; someone would have noticed something, they had too.

“V is the reason Chloe is no longer with Jasper Jax,” Taggart reminded him.

Mac sighed; you could not deny evidence. “Do we know where she is?”

“At GH. That’s why I’ve waited.”

“Damn,” Mac muttered. This was not going to be easy. “We roll in twenty.”



General Hospital


The hospital waiting room was finally quite again, most likely due to the lack of Quartermaines. Now that Emily had come out of surgery in good condition they left to invade her hospital room. She had not opened her eyes yet, but that mattered little to them. Frankly Jason was glad to be rid of them. Carly had gone home earlier in the morning to be with Michael, though they would be back later. V stayed all night, Jax had arranged for a private room for them so she could get some sleep but be close by. Emily’s friends had setup a waiting schedule since she was not yet awake. Lucky and Elizabeth had been here throughout the night; Nikolas and Gia had come in around nine to relieve them.

Jason rubbed his eyes. He was tired and worried but neither emotion was visible to those who did not know him. He had not cried like Monica or raised hell like Edward or tried to soothe like Ned. No, he sat quietly in the corner holding Carly’s hand. Without her support Jason was sure he would have lost it. He ached to hit someone or something, though he knew it was useless. Sonny or Edward would have been his first choice.

He spent the night dealing with conflicting emotions. Worry and anger. Worry for his sister life and anger at his best friend for loving her. Everything was so just confusing.

He was the one who asked Sonny to look after Emily. He was the one who told Emily to rely on Sonny as well, but he never imaged the possibility of something more than friendship between them.

Hell it seemed impossible, Jason thought, since Sonny loved Carly. He could not understand how anybody could go from loving one person to another so quickly. But than he himself, had loved Robin and suddenly without knowing how or why, he loved Carly. Jason knew you could not control whom you loved or when you would fall in love with someone. It happened and either you accepted it or you did not. Yes, Sonny loved Emily. But the big question was did Emily love him back? Once he knew the answer he could decided what to do from there.





Sonny paced the hallways of the hospital. Jason had given him blank looks throughout the night. He was an outsider. As far as most were concerned he had no reason to be there if he was not supporting Jason. And Jason did not really need him since Carly was there.

So he had left, not the hospital but them. It seemed as though every five minutes he was asking for an update on Emily from one of the nurses. For a long time, too long really, the answer had been that she was in surgery. Well that’s nice, Sonny had thought bitterly, when they could not give him any more detail. Then she was in post-op, and next transferred to her room in ICU. Now she was resting comfortably there, having not yet awakened with the Quartermaines standing outside her door like a pack of hyenas. Lack of sleep was getting to him. Coffee, yes caffeine would help and hopefully after a trip down to the cafeteria the coast would be clear and he would be able to see Emily.





For the first time since they had all rushed to the hospital the Quartermaines were quiet. Alan and Monica were sitting together holding hands and talking in hushed voices. They could see directly into Emily’s room from the far wall. The curtain was open and she was connected five stands, two IVs and three machines, the beeping of them echoed out into the hallway. Emily was pale and looked tiny in the bed. Ned rubbed his hands over his face. He had consumed gallons of coffee, which Alexis had brought him. Finally when the news that Emily was out of surgery was given he was able to convince to go home and get some rest. He had to promise five times that he would call if anything changed before she would leave. A more perfect woman, Ned was sure could never be found. Ned’s gaze left Alan and Monica and travel over the rest of the family. Against the other wall was another couch, brought especially for them, sat Edward and Chloe. AJ was standing against glass separating Emily from the rest of them. His eyes never left his face. Sometimes, Ned thought, Junior surprised him. Not often though.

Like Jax had done for V, Alan had arranged a room for Lila to rest. It had taken awhile but they had finally convinced her go and rest. Ned looked forward to going to get her when Emily woke up. Nothing was better than seeing a look of love and approval from Lila’s face. The soul of the Quartermaine family and the closet thing to an angel on earth.

“You think he could stay with his family,” Edward grumbled.

“You know Justus went to help with the investigation,” Ned said irritated.

“Not Justus. He’s the only useful grandson I have. I meant that ingrate Jason.”

“You will not bad mouth my son,” Monica said loudly from the corner.

“If you paid attention to either of your sons Monica the one would not be a criminal and the other a drunk,” Edward blustered.

“I’m warning you Edward...”

“Father please...” “Do you guys really thing now is the right time to get into this,” Chloe asked.

“Your sons are a blight on society....”

“You’re the one who drove them away....”

“Monica don’t let him upset you...”

“Now see here....”

“It’s my house and I want you out...”

“I gave it to you...”

“Enough,” AJ yelled as Ned whistle to get their attention. While they were bickering Mac and Taggart had arrived.

“Nothing like Quartermaines first thing in the morning to ruin your day,” Taggart remarked to Mac. Mac chuckled.

“This is no laughing matter. My granddaughter has been shot and you’re standing around....”

“Put a sock in it Edward....”

“Can we please stop for five minutes to hear....”

“Chloe Morgan,” Taggart said walking towards her, “you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Emily Bowen....”

“What?...”

“This is some kind of mistake....”

“This is ridiculous...”

“Chloe....”

“Stop,” Mac roared tired their insentient questions and arguments.

“But...” they all started again. Ned as gatekeeper took on the spokesman role. “Mac please this must be some kind of mistake.”

“I wish I could say that but I can’t.” The Quartermaines stared horrified at Chloe. “Taggart.”

“Okay we’ll try this again. Chloe Morgan you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Emily Bowen Quartermaine. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney if you can not afford an attorney one will be provided for you. Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you?”

Chloe’s blue eyes stared up at Taggart blankly. Distantly she could hear the Quartermaines arguing again. She was unconcerned as Taggart helped her up, and cuffed her. She was silent as he and Mac led her away.





Chapter Twenty-Eight


Sunday, February 22
General Hospital


The commotion and confusion of the last few hours had finally died down. Sonny was not sure who was more livid, the Quartermaines or V and Jax. The things that had been said, threatened had his blood chilling. Finally acceptance and grief had claimed them, Edward looked defeated. Never once had Sonny felt bad for the old coot until day. Facing the chance of losing Emily, dealing with what Chloe had done and having to tell Lila…Sonny was afraid that the news would break her. As was everyone it seemed. So concerned were Q’s that they asked Jason to come with them to tell Lila, and he agreed. For the first time since the accident Jason took a step towards his family instead of away.

Now the hallway outside Emily’s room was empty and silent expect for the beeping the machines. Taking his chance Sonny headed into her room.

She hurt. The pain radiated through her, wrapped around her and squeezed making it worse. Was this what cancer was like, Emily wondered, killing you from the inside out. Had Juan experienced this kind of pain when he was beat up? Or had Jason when first woke up after the accident?

It was like fire burning threw her. She wanted to cry but it took to much energy. She tried opening her eyes but the florescent lighting was scorching. Emily tried moving but found that she was too weak. So she waited. Soon someone would come, soon. Jason, or Lucky or one of the Q’s. They would come and take her mind off of the pain.

Emily could hear the footsteps approaching and her heart leapt. Finally.

As soon as they entered the room Emily knew it was Sonny. She wanted to smile but even that was too much. She could feel him staring at her from across the room and she wanted him closer.

God, how stupid had she been to wait. She should have called when she first thought of it. But no she had to let her insecurities play on her. She let what other people would think stop her. Not anymore, once she got her voice back she’d tell him.

Come on Sonny, she begged silently, come closer.





Carly was frantic trying to find Jason. He was not in the waiting room, or the cafeteria or any of the dozen of hallways she had been down. You would think that the Quartermaines could be heard from anywhere in the hospital, Carly thought.

She was worried because she could not hear them even now as she headed down the hallway that contained Emily’s room. Not a peep. The silence was eerie. Carly missed Emily room the first time she went by. The only reason she doubled back was because she thought she saw Sonny.

She was right about Sonny, he was standing in Emily’s room. His attention was completely focused on the pale figure in bed. There were no Quartermaines around, which worried her; Carly had no idea where anyone was. She was about to ask Sonny when he started talking to Emily, as he did so he moved closer her.

“Emily,” his voice was tired and stained. “You’ve got us all worried.”

The sound of his voice was like music to her ears.

“So worried in fact that Jason is being nice to Edward.”

That floored her, if she was not already on her back Emily was sure she would be now.

“Some things have been going on. It’s going to be rough when you wake up but I know you’re strong enough to handle it.”

Things, Emily’s mind screamed. What kind of things?

“I…I know I shouldn’t be here.”

But I am glad that you are, Emily thought. I want you here with me Sonny.

“I wanted to tell you…the flowers were a mistake…”

Her heart fell. A mistake? No he could not really mean that, could he?

“You deserve someone better than me.”

No one is better than you Sonny.

“My life is dangerous. And our age differences…”

It doesn’t matter. Stupid things like that shouldn’t keep us apart.

“But I wanted to tell you…at least once…call me selfish but I have too,” Sonny said taking her hand. The electricity she felt every time he touched her ran up through her arm to the rest of her body. She was hanging on his every word. Please, say it.

Sonny rubbed her hand and than turned it over and kissed her palm. “I love you,” he said softly.

“I love you too,” Emily sighed.

Sonny shot his head up in surprise. Emily was squinting at him. Love and pain mixed in her deep velvet eyes.

Carly had stood transfixed. Her heart swelled hearing the monolog. Her heart leapt, like she was watching some romantic movie when Emily returned Sonny’s words of love. Sonny was right, there were so many reasons why they should not be together and only one reason for them to be. Love.

The same had been true for her and Jason. Love should always win out, Carly thought. But right now that would have to wait, she knew as she saw the Quartermaines heading down the hallway.

“Jason,” she called loudly alerting Sonny.

“Don’t go,” Emily asked.

“I have too. But I’ll be back,” he promised.

Emily nodded what little she could. Sonny smiled at her and kissed her hand again.

Jason hurried towards Carly and wrapped his arms around her. “Finally. I’ve needed you.”

Carly hugged him tight, “I’m here now.”

“What the hell are you doing in my Granddaughter’s room Corinthos,” Edwards yelled.

“Edward,” Lila quietly reprimanded.

“I’d like to know that too,” Alan said.

“I saw her move…she’s awake…”

“Why didn't you call a doctor…”

“You should have sent for us…”

“Finally…”

“Thank God…”

The Quartermaines started celebrating loudly and entered Emily’s room.

The hallway cleared of them leaving Sonny, Jason and Carly. “Can I have a minute with you,” Jason asked. Sonny nodded.

“Jas,” Carly said tugging on his hand. “I want to talk to you first.”

“Carly it’s important.”

“So is this,” she insisted.

“I’ll wait,” Sonny told his friend. Or at least he hoped Jason was still his friend.

“Fine,” Jason replied. Sonny left leaving them alone. Carly pulled Jason over into the corner.

“He was talking to her before she woke up,” Carly informed. “He loves her.”

“I know he told me last night.”

“No I mean love, as in the real thing. As in what we have. And she loves him back.”

“How do you know,” Jason asked.

“I heard her tell him so.”

Jason sighed, “I don’t know what to do about this.”

"You can’t handle love Jason. It happens.”

“But…his life…”

“Our life,” she countered.

“Their ages…”

“Technicality of birth.”

Jason smiled, “Why are you fighting for them?”

“Because I care about both them. Because people deserve to be with those they love. Because once the Q’s find out all hell will break lose. And because they deserve a chance at least.”

Jason nodded, “I’ll be back soon.”

“I’ll let Emily know,” Carly promised.





Sonny paced as he waited for Jason. He had not expected Emily to wake up. He did not believe that she could love him, but her soft voice replayed over and over in his head. I love you too…those words set him free and terrified him.

“Sonny,” Jason low voice stopped his pacing.

“Jason,” Sonny said turning. “Everything all right?”

“Not really.”

“Listen Jason…”

“No,” Jason said in a harsh tone. One he had never used before when speaking to Sonny. “You’re going to listen to me. I don’t know how I feel about you and Emily. What I do know, however, is that I want the two of you to be happy. If that means being together I’ll accept it but…”

“But?”

“You wait. Nothing happens till after her birthday. She finishes school, either here or at St. Catherine’s. If she wants to go away to college I don’t want you to stop her.”

“If it's what she wants I would never stand in her way.”

Jason nodded knowing he had Sonny’s word. “Try not to break her heart,” he asked.

“I’ll do anything to prevent that from happening,” Sonny swore.

“I’ll arrange it so that you can see her later, but I think it would be best for you to go now.”

“Thank you…Jason…”

“Yeah?”

“If you…I love her but if you rather that…”

“I won’t make that choice for her. But it means a lot that you offered.”

A Little Over a Year Later
May 25
Morgan Residence, Emily’s Room


“I’m telling you to go for the red one,” Carly said rubbing her tummy. She might be six months pregnant, but that was not going to make her a prude regarding lingerie.

“I don’t know,” Emily biting her lip as she looked down at the two pieces on her bed.

“Don’t be a…” The ringing of Emily’s private line stopped Carly’s comment.

“Hello,” she answered on the second ring.

“Emily,” Monica’s strained voice carried over the line.

“Mom,” Emily sighed. Please don’t let this be another phone call trying to convince me not to go with Sonny, she prayed silently.

“Listen honey I know you planned to go away this weekend…”

“Not planned. I am going away this weekend. With Sonny. I wish you’d just accept that.”

“How can I. Emily he’s twice your age and a mobster,” Monica cried.

“I love him,” Emily stated.

“Listen I don’t want to have this conversation again. I wanted to tell you that the family is throwing a party…”

“In Grandmother’s honor, yes I know. In fact she warned me about it a few days ago. Why is it that I have her blessing and no one else’s? First Grandfather, then Dad, Ned and now you.”

“Emily we’re not trying to drive you away. We only want to protect you.”

“I don’t need protection from my heart. And Sonny is my heart.”

“Emily you’re too young…”

“Let's not go there,” Emily stated emphatically. “I’ll call you when I get back,” she said hanging up.

“Some things never change,” Alexis stated. “You okay?”

“Of course, I have years of practice of dealing with them. So suggestions please,” Emily asked bring them back to the task at him.

“I’m telling you. You want to seduce the man go with red,” Carly stated again.

“I don’t know,” V said touching the creamy silk sheath. The diamond and gold of her wedding band glistened in the light. “I think this one is more you.”

“Alexis,” Emily inquired.

“Do you realize Ned would kill me if he knew I was participating in this conversation? And Sonny’s my client…it seems somehow unethical.”

“Please if I can contribute to this conversation than so can you,” Carly snapped.

“Fine. Go with cream,” Alexis said eyeing Carly.

“Because you like it or to annoy Carly?”

“It's you Emily,” Alexis assured her.



The Next Day
The Island


Sonny wrapped his arm around Emily’s waist and nuzzled her neck. “How do you like the view?”

Emily smiled and snuggled closer, “It’s beautiful,” she sighed. The sun played on the crystal clear water and the white sands of the beach; it all seemed to blur and she could not tell where the blue ocean began or the sky began. “Thank you for bringing me here.”

Sonny kissed her collarbone, “Ready for the grand tour?” Nodding Emily turned and took his arm. Sonny brought their joined hands up and kissed her wrist as they walked out of the room.

They spent the afternoon walking all over the island. Shops, colors, smells and sounds combined to make the island breathtaking. Everything was alive moving to the rhythm that the sound of the surf crashing against the shore made.

As the sun was finally setting Sonny and Emily stood on the private beach outside their suite. The oranges, pinks, purples and blues played across the heavens and Sonny felt at peace. It was amazing how much could change in one short year.

He hugged Emily tighter, pulled her closer to him; he had almost lost her. That memory continued to haunt him. His rational mind knew that being with him put her in danger but she had made the choice to stay and he simply was not strong enough to send her away. She told him, many times, that they had overcome too much to give up. And Emily was right. There had been so many doubts to contend with, not to mention the Quartermaines, Emily’s friends and disapproval from most of Port Charles.

But love was a gift. Not something to be ignored or pushed away. Obstacles were meant to be faced and defeated. You’re meant to hold onto love, to treasure it. And if things worked out the way he wanted, Sonny planned on cherishing Emily for the rest of their lives.

“What are you thinking about,” Emily asked as the last of the sun slipped beyond the water.

“Dinner. It’s been hours since we ate,” Sonny replied.

Emily bit her lip; hoping he wasn’t too hungry. “Let me just change…”

“You look wonderful,” he said rubbing her cheek.

“Five minutes,” she promised kissing his cheek. Sonny watched as she hurried inside. The bed was too close he thought rubbing his face. It was going to be difficult, this staying platonic, but than again it was always nearly impossible when they shared a bed.

“Sonny,” Emily voice’s carried out to him.

Taking a breath, he entered the room. Emily was not in the sitting room. He headed for the bedroom.

“We should get…” he stopped mid-sentence when he saw her. Her long, soft brown hair was down, and her eyes sparkled with mischief. He gulped, speechless. His eyes swept over her. What was that creamy, lacey slip-thing? His virginal Emily in a silk sheath that clung to, accentuated, her every, womanly, curve. “What are you doing,” he finally asked huskily.

“Seducing you,” Emily said with a nervous smile as she reached out to him.

“Emily,” he groaned at her touch. She played with the curl below his collar with one hand wrapping the other around his neck, pulling him closer. Sonny closed his eyes. His arms snaked around her slim waist.

Hours later Emily felt completely loved and safe with Sonny’s strong arms encircling her. “I love you.”

Sonny’s heart filled at her words. She was his now in everyway and no matter what the future brought he was confident in their love. They could face anything, hell they all ready had. “I love you too,” he replied kissing her temple.

They fell asleep in each other’s arms as they would for the rest of their lives.
