Prologue

Lucky stared out into the water, following the movement out pass Helena’s yacht to Spoon Island. Looking at it he was drawn back to the past…his father holding a gun to Stefan and his aunt pleading with him not to shoot, leaving the island with his dad to join his mother, sister and grandmother and dancing with Liz outside the ballroom; at that thought Lucky looked away from Wyndamere. A cool breeze came off the water, but Lucky was to deep in his thoughts to notice, that’s probably why Emily got him, if he had been more alert and not suck in his memories he would have left.

Emily cutting through the docks to Kelly’s, she wanted to be early so that she could talk to Tammy and see if Liz had called. The search for Lucky was taking forever and it seemed no one could find him. Emily had wanted to go with, the three of them looking for the fourth musketeer. Unfortunately she had school and could not go, Juan kept her spirit up but she still felt like she should be with her friends when they found Lucky. The four musketeers together again, whole again, like it should be. Emily walked on to the top landing of the stairs heading down to the dock and stopped in shock. It couldn’t be. Could it? No it’s just someone who looks like him from behind…

Lucky turned around to head back to his room. He stopped short when he saw Emily. Complete silence fell over the docks; a pin could drop. Their eyes caught, surprise was in both. Emily’s eyes watered as she looked on her best friend. The lack of hope and happiness that seemed to be gone since he had “died” and Jason had left vanished, it was replaced with the happiness beyond any she could imagine.

Lucky was glad to see his friend but afraid that she would tell. He didn’t know what to do. Emily started to say something, before she could Lucky ran towards her, grabbing her he pulled her through to the street and hailed a taxi. Signaling her not to speak they rode in silence, both wondering what was going to happen.

The cabby had asked for a destination. Emily still in shock could not reply. Lucky told the guy to just drive around for awhile. The pair sat in the backseat staring out their windows passing familiar landmarks. Finally, tired of the motion and the deaden silence, Emily told the cabby to “go to the Quartmaine mansion,” Lucky looked over at her and she continued “we’ll go to the boat house and talk.” Relieved at that Lucky sat back and the silence continued.

The cabby stopped at the front gates and Emily dug around her purse for money. “I don’t suppose you have few bucks?” Lucky shook his head and pulled his hands from his pockets grasping a small roll of money. Emily looked at him in surprise.

“Twenty-five dollars. All in ones.” Lucky replied to Emily’s look. He handed her a few dollars and she paid the cabby. The car sped away and the two were left looking at each other unsure if this is what they should be doing. “Lets go.” Side by side, like in the old days two best friends walked up the Quartmaine drive; expect there was more then a year separating them, Helena mechanisms were at work inside of him but neither was aware of that yet.

Walking into the boathouse with Lucky was strange. It had been years since they went in here to talk, the last time was a few days before the Spencer’s faked Laura’s death. A lot had happened since then and both had changed, but their friendship remained. Both were proud of that fact and glad to have each other to lean on when needed. Lucky looked around the room noticing that it hadn’t changed much that made him feel better, somethings never change. Needing to sit before she fainted from the overload of emotions Emily found a tackle box and lower herself, placing her hands on her chin she spoke. “Lucky, I’m so glad to see you. I missed you.”

Lucky look at her, she seemed like a little child looking up at him with eyes full of conflicting emotions. “I’ve missed you too Em.” She looked reassured by this and that brought on his, he knew he could trust her. “Em, you can’t tell anyone I’m here.” “What you can’t mean that. Liz, Nikolas, your mom and dad and Lulu. They’ve…we’ve missed you so much. You can’t stay away.”

“I have to” he said in a slightly angry voice “I’m not ready to see anyone. You can’t tell anyone. Em, promise me you won’t.”

Emily looked up at him in confusion. Not tell. How could she not tell; everyone loves him and has missed him. They would be so happy. They need him. How could he do this to them…Emily stopped. He needed time. He was gone for a year. Trapped. Hostage. He needed time; she knew what that felt like. He was her best friend and he needed her.

Lucky watched the emotions play over her face. He remember that she was usually better at hiding her emotions, years of living with the Quartmaines had taught her that, by he knew that seeing him had taken a toll. He knew before she said it, he knew she wouldn’t tell anyone.

“I won’t tell anyone. I promise.”

She told him she had to meet someone, she had to go. She needed to know how to reach him. He hesitated.

“You either trust me or not.” So he told her, she said she by the next day they could talk. He said he didn’t want to. Emily told him she'd bring ribs from Eli’s and they could just sit and quiet like they use to do sometimes.

“Don’t forget the cheese fries.” She told him she wouldn’t. They hugged. Emily held tight like she might never hold him again. “See you tomorrow Em.” “Tomorrow Lucky.” She looked after him as he left and then hurried to meet Juan at Kelly’s, she had no idea how she was going to explain being late. She thing of something she told herself as she headed back towards the docks, Kelly’s and Juan.

Chapter One

Setting

Three days later, Laura has returned the day before along with Felicia--Luke is still out searching

Emily sat at Kelly’s thinking over the last few days. She had gone to see Lucky; he had a room over a bar. It reminded Emily of his place over Jason’s but without the mural that Elizabeth had painted. She had sat on his bed and they had talked like nothing had happened; it was as if the fire was a figment of her and everyone else's imagination. She asked him as Faison, Helena and Stefan but he said he wasn't ready to talk about it. She understood that,if she had been held prisoner for over a year she wouldn't want to talk about it either. She asked why he hit Luke, ran away, why he hadn't contacted anyone and why he didn't want anyone to know he was home. His answers confused her.

He was angry with his parents for taking so long to find him and for believing he was dead. So why wasn't he angry with her, what about Liz? He said she and Elizabeth were different. So why hadn't he called them? He wasn’t ready to see them. Why not? He needed time and he wouldn’t explain more. He asked about Lulu and then she told him about Jason, AJ,Carly and Sonny. He wanted to know what Bobbie thought and if Lucas was all right, she told him she'd find out.

Elizabeth watched Emily, she looks more confused than I do she thought.

She and Nikolas had gone in search of Lucky and found nothing; not even a trace. She was worried. Did he have food, shelter, money? Why didn’t he call? Did he still love her? Elizabeth shook herself; of course he loved her. No matter what. They promised that it was a permanent lock. Today. Forever. Lucky loved her and was out there, he just needed time. She understood that, she needed time after the rape and Lucky gave it to her. She could do the same; it just hurt so much. She wondered if Luke and Laura had heard anything. She was going to find out, but first she needed to be cheered up and Emily could always do that, so she headed over to her table.

Emily was thinking about a way to go in and start up a conversation with Bobbie when she heard Liz’s voice. “Hi Emily.” Emily looked up at her best friend. She looked tired and sad. She didn’t find Lucky, but Emily knew that. How was going to lie to her best...no Lucky was her best friend and she had to be loyal to him. If she told anyone she was afraid he run.

“Hi, Liz. Did you just get back?”

“Yeah, no...” Elizabeth was about to say that she had no luck and she really didn’t. She didn’t have Lucky.

Emily sensed what she was going to say and nodded knowingly. “How’s Nikolas taking it?”

“Pretty well. He thinks...we think that Lucky just needs time. So we decided to come back here and wait.”

Emily was pleased to hear this, it made it easier for her to keep Lucky’s secret knowing that Liz and Nikolas understood he needed time, hopefully Luke and Laura would feel the same way. “Where is Nikolas?”

“He went to see Laura and Lulu. I’m planning on going there after I check in with Tammy. Who knows maybe when I get there they’ll have good news.”

Emily knew that she wouldn’t but she nodded at Liz like that could be a possibility. She hated hiding Lucky from those who loved him most, but what else could she do? If she told he'd run, she also knew there was a great chance that everyone to hate her when they found out. Emily weighed these conflicting thoughts in her mind, but loyalty was the issue. Her loyalty lied with her best friend and he didn’t want to be found so instead of saying Liz, Lucky is alive and only a town over she said,

“I’ll go in with you.” She got up from the table, gave Liz a reassuring hug and together two friends entered the doors of Kelly’s together.

Inside the friendly diner two tables were occupied, Ned and Alexis sat at one and the girls waved. Tammy was behind the counter and Bobbie was staring at the accounting books, using them to distract herself from Roy’s problems. Tammy looked up and saw the duo heading for the counter and smiled.

“Elizabeth it's great to see you, we missed you.” Tammy came around the counter to hug her.

At hearing Tammy saying hello to Elizabeth, Bobbie perked up. Maybe she found Lucky. Bobbie turned around just as Liz and Tammy broke their embrace.

“Elizabeth, sweetie, I’m so glad your back,” Bobbie said as she embraced the girl.

“Bobbie its good to be back. Before you guys get your hopes up,Nikolas and I didn’t have any luck finding him. We decided he need time, so we thought we give it to him,” she said with a weak smile.

“That sounds like a good idea to me.”

“Thanks Tammy.”

“Sure thing. If you need anything let me know."

Elizabeth shook her head yes. A buzzer started going off. “That’s dessert. I have to get them before they burn. Liz, don’t worry about work you still have two days feel free to take them.”

"Thanks Tammy,” Liz replied as Tammy headed back into the kitchen.

“What do you think Bobbie?”

“I think you should take the two days and I think you and Nikolas might be right. We don’t know what it’s been like for him. A year of being held against his will, he probably does needs time.”

“Thanks Bobbie that makes me feel better about our decision. Listen I just wanted to check in before I went to Laura’s...”

“It was nice of you to do that, tell Laura and Lulu I said hi.”

“Sure. Bye Bobbie.”

“Bye, sweetie.” The two embraced again and Bobbie turned back to the books.

“Em, I’ll call you later.”

“Okay. Bye.” Liz waved and headed out of Kelly’s, Em watched her go and turned to face Bobbie. “Bobbie?”

“What? Oh, Em I’m sorry honey did you need something?”

Em hesitated, not knowing what to say. “I...um I wanted to know how you and Lucas were.”

Bobbie smiled at the young girl in front of her. “Lucas is good. He’s spending more time with Tony and he’s happy about that. I’m...I’m all right. Just a little distracted.”

“Nothing bad I hope?"

"Nothing good, but don’t worry about it, it’s being taken care of.”

Emily suddenly remembered Roy and what happened. She nodded and told Bobbie that if she needed anything she be willing to help. Even baby-sit if Bobbie needed some free time. Bobbie told her she might take her up on that offer. Emily said goodbye and headed out of the dinner waving goodbye to Ned and Alexis.

Ned looked at the door watching Emily go. He knew that something was going on with her. Hell the whole family was having problems. AJ and Jax trying to take over ELQ. Ned wanted to go back and help so badly that it hurt. No matter what grandfather did he was family and ELQ was in blood. But, L&B needed him. He had to be Eddie Maine again. That thought worried him; Eddie was his past--a painful one. Alexis was great at cheering him on and he loved her for it. Supporting him, helping him kept his head straight about ELQ and calming him when he got a little crazy and planned on canceling the show.

“Don’t even thing about it.”

“Think about what?”

"Ned I know you too well. I know that look on your face when you’re thinking about canceling the show. I’m a great lawyer but if you canceled it would be quite a legal entanglement.”

“I wasn’t...” Alexis' incredulous look made him confess the truth. “All right I was thinking about it” at her smile of triumph “only a little. What I’m really worried about is the family, especially Emily.”

“Ned, I know you’re worried about your family, but...Edward, Lila, Alan, Monica and AJ can take care of themselves. If you’re worried about Emily talk to her and tell if she needs anything to come to you.”

Ned looked over at Alexis and thought about how lucky he was to have her. That she loved him. She was his lover, his friend, confidant and lawyer. Who could ask for more? Ned gave Alexis a goofy smile.

“What’s that for?”

Ned leaned over and kisses her. “That’s for being you.”

A little taken back, Alexis smile at him crookedly. She leaned over and kissed him again. “I have to go; a meeting with a client. Will you be at L&B and not ELQ later?”

Ned rolled his eyes. “Yes I’ll be at L&B later. Dinner tonight?”

"Will the children be joining us?”

“No I think we'll leave Jax and Chloe at home and have a romantic night together.”

“Perfect. Love you. Bye.”

“Love you too. Play nicely with the other lawyers.” Ned kissed her again. “Bye.” Sighing Ned got up and headed to L&B.

Liz stood outside the Spencer home; she could hear Lulu’s laughter. She smiled, no matter what being near Lulu made her feel better. Elizabeth was sure that Nikolas had told her some silly thing to start the little girl’s giggling fit. This thought brought back some of her sadness. Lucky should be in there with them, they should be a family; like the last day they had together and went out roller blading. Liz smiled weakly at the thought of them together, being happy, being a family. Hating to interrupt but needing to be a part of the happy moment Liz knocked on the door.

Laura stood in the doorway between the kitchen and living room watching her children. The picture missed one. At one time Laura thought it would never be whole again, but that thought was wrong; her son was alive. She knew that sooner or later her son would be found and they could be a family again. It would be more than just having her son back; she was sure once she had all her children she and Luke could find away back together. It had hurt her finding Luke in Tammy’s arms; it had hurt more when he started a relationship with Felicia. She knew that it was more than friendship but she wasn’t she sure how far it had progressed. Felicia said she wanted Mac and her family and that nothing had happened between them, but there was the possibility. Laura hated that; she hated it that Luke could look at another person like that. She now understood how hard it was to watch her with Stefan. She regretted turning to Stefan. She regretted not being the one with him the day of the memorial service. She regretted a lot of things; she couldn’t turn back time and change everything but she could rebuild her life and she was planning on starting after Lucky got back home. Watching her other two children gave her hope and peace.

When Laura heard the knock she told Nikolas she would get it. She walked over to her front door with the hope that it was Luke with Lucky and if not at least he knew where he was. Swinging the door open she saw Liz. Though a little disappointed, Laura’s face lit up. This was the girl who had become like a daughter. A girl who loved her son almost as much as she did. She was Lucky life and soul mate, she was family.

“Liz, it’s so wonderful to see you.” Laura drew her into an embrace.

"Laura its great to see you too.” Liz hugged her back tightly. She viewed Laura as she would her own mother. It was Laura who understood best how much she loves and missed Lucky.

At hearing her mother say Liz’s name Lulu jumped up and ran over to get a hug. Lulu always loved it when Liz came over. They played games and had fun and Liz would tell her stories about Lucky. Sometimes he was a knight saving his friends and other times he was an adventurer sleeping under docks. Laura and Liz broke their hug off and Liz bent down to hug her.

“Hi, Lizbeth.”

“Hi, Lulu. My you look pretty today. I heard you laughing before I came in did Nikolas say something funny?”

“Yes. You want to come play with us.”

“I have to talk to Laura for a minute and I’ll be right over.” Liz hugged Lulu again and waved hi to Nikolas, he waved back. “Any word?” She directed the question to Laura.

“No. Luke is still looking.” She replied in a sad voice. Liz nodded and headed over to play with Lulu and Nikolas. Laura looked on, soon Liz,very soon and will all be happy again. I promise.

AJ sat in his room at the Port Charles Hotel. The room was elegant, but he hated it. He felt empty, hollow. Everything was gone...his son, wife, family, job and company. He had money but it couldn’t buy him his son. After pouring another drink of vodka and swirling for a few minutes he drank. He blamed his brother. It was Jason’s fault, because everyone loves Jason best. His parents, his sister, his wife and the one that hurt the mosthis son. He was alone and alienated from everyone since his brother. Jason was gone and they loved him more. There was no one to take out his anger on except himself. He had started drinking again; he lost control and didn’t care. He would hurt everyone. Especially grandfather and Carly; they had caused him the most pain because they want Jason more than him. He wasn’t good enough. He knew that, its what his family taught him all his life. He was selfish and self-destructive and now he was going to prove it.

Emily had called Juan and told him that she couldn’t meet him. She told him she was spending the afternoon with Lila. She hated lying to him, but she had to both he and Lucky needed things from her.

First she went to Sonny’s and apologized for the way she treated him after Jason left. It was so much easier to put her anger at Jason for leaving on Sonny and Carly. Plus they hurt him, she was very protective of her family and she hated it when they were hurt and she hated those who them. This was very conflicting when it was another family who hurt them or if they were hurting themselves like AJ was doing now with his drinking. She completely understood Carly’s reason for not letting AJ see Michael; Emily was sure that would be the only time she and Carly would see eye to eye. She explained to Sonny why and he forgave her. He understood, some how Emily knew he would. She also knew that Sonny was sorry that he hurt Jason, even if he was living with Carly. That was for the baby. Sonny was doing the right thing and Emily respected him for that.

After her apology Emily had asked Sonny to help with Juan singing career. He said he talk to Ned. At first Ned didn’t go for it, but after making sure that Sonny’s name wouldn’t appear anywhere on L&B financial statements and that he would have no say in Juan’s career he agree. Emily knew Juan wanted to do it on his own, but that would take forever and he deserved better. He had a great voice and was meant to be star. She do anything to help him achieve his goal, even lie to him. Lies were something she hated, but sometimes lies are told for a good reason. Emily pushed the voice that told her she was kidding herself to the back of her mind. Then Ned had a chat with her. Ned had told her not to forget about herself. He told her she could anything and that she should use some of her energy on herself. She would, but right now Juan and Lucky needed her. Anyway she had to find a goal for herself and right now she was to busy with homework, Juan and Lucky to worry about the future besides she had another year of high school to think about it and decide. She thanked Ned again and left to go see Lucky. She had really wanted to be there when Juan found out, but Lucky needed her. She promised that she make it up to him. There would be many special moments in their life together missing one wouldn’t matter in the long run.

Lucky paced back and forth across his room. Emily should have been here by now was all he could think. Horror thoughts hadn’t come up yet, but they were close. He knew she knew how to get here. He remembered the other day how she joked that it was like his room over Jason’s. He remembered at Jason’s name that she got sad. She really missed him; he understood that for year he missed his little sister, his brother, Elizabeth, Emily, his family and his life. He hadn’t told Emily about his visits from heaven with Lulu. He knew she wouldn’t understand why he was willing to see her and nobody else. Hell, he didn’t understand himself. Lucky looked at the clock, two more minutes and I’m going to find her. Just as that thought passed through his mind he heard the knock at the door.

Emily knew she was late. She hadn’t expected Ned’s little chat and that threw her off times wise she hoped that Lucky would understand. She knocked and the next second the door flung opened. “Its about time. I was getting nervous.”

Emily smiled at him in apology. “Sorry. I got caught in a conversion with Ned. You know my family it doesn’t matter where your going they have to get there point across before you can leave.”

Lucky knew the Quartmaines and understood immediately. “You didn’t...”

Emily roller her eyes at him. “Don’t be stupid Lucky. The Q’s think I’m at the library.”

“Good. Come on in. You came up the back way so no one saw you right?”

“Yes.” Emily walked into the room. His room over still reminder her of his old room over Jason’s it made it seem like nothing had changed. She looked around no mural or anything else on the walls; things had changed. “You needed something on your walls. I could bring you a picture or something next time.”

Emily turned around and smiled at him. “Sure. That be great.” Lucky hugged her.

“It feels weird,” Emily said, “I’ve forgotten what it feels like to hug you. Or have you near by knowing that when I need you I can just go get you.”

“I know. It's strange being a friend again.”

“Your not being a friend again Lucky. No matter what and I mean what, you’ll always be my best friend. If we can get through you faking your mom’s death and my drug use, we can get through this.”

“Your right.” He hugged her again and showed her a chair. “Drink?”

She shook her head no. “So why don’t you fill me in on the rest of what I missed while I was gone.”

Emily took a deep breath and began the rest of the story.

Chapter Two

Jax sat watching Chloe sleeping, she didn’t have a nightmare last night, but there was still a chance that she could have one before she woke up from her nap. He felt useless, he hated that. He knew that he should be able to help Chloe more, but he couldn’t. His anger was building up and he was ready to explode. He didn’t want to direct that a Chloe so he choose Edward and ELQ. Jax was itching for a fight and Edward would be a good fight, it be a tough win, but still a win and damn fulfilling. When he was done with ELQ, he had Helena to face. Helena had spent years tormenting Alexis and she was responsible for Chloe’s accident. She would pay for both. Nobody hurt people he cared about.

Jax walked into the living room. It held so many memories...of Brenda, V., Alexis and now Chloe. He could picture the happy memories with his loved ones and friends here, they over shadowed the bad ones, but with Chloe the good memories had a dark presence from keeping them truly happy, her illness. They had a gloom hanging over them. Jax wondered if he and Chloe would have any simply happy memories without her illness hanging over them.

Popcorn. Jax laughed at the thought. Ever since living with Alexis, Jax craved popcorn at every meal. His killer coffee and power drinks weren’t enough anymore in the morning; he wanted popcorn even then. Chloe always make faces at his drink and water down the coffee, he was sure popcorn would be more agreeable. Maybe he could convene Alexis to give him a bag and he could surprise Chloe with it tomorrow morning. Jax laughed at the idea; he knew that Alexis would rather die than give up her supply. Often times while they were married, he and Alexis ate popcorn because that’s all she could make. He didn’t it was the best popcorn he ever tasted. He shouldn’t have given her the popcorn supply in the divorce. Now he craved it. He hadn’t taken time the to restock since Chloe moved in, he wondered if room service would deliver it.

Chloe watched Jax from behind. She was so lucky to have him. He was so wonderful, kind, sweet, handsome, understanding and caring. She loved him more then she thought possible. He was the prince charming she never believed she find, because they were too good to be true, Jax wasn’t. He was real and wonderful; an original that made her believe that she could be loved and deserved love like the love she read about in Edward and Lila’s letters. “I’m awake.” She said in a sleepy voice.

Jax looked up at her beautiful face. She looked happy and well rested. “No dreams again?”

“No dreams” she lied. Jax jumped up and grabbed her. Chloe squealed in excitement forgetting the ache in her head. He began kissing and touching her. Her last thought before she was swept away by passion was that she loved him.

Emily stared at the boy across the room. The boy who was her best friend. He got her through her mother’s death; they had run away together, they had gotten over betrayal and drugs. Lucky had been her first real friend, her first crush and her first kiss. In Arizona, when they had run away, Emily got trapped in a cave with a rattlesnake and Lucky tried to get her out but was knocked out by a rock falling on him. Emily had scared the snake away and Lucky got her out. The first thing they did was hug, happy that the other was safe and alive. The kiss kind of happened. It was quick, barely a second long. After the kiss they had hugged again and pretended like the kiss never happened. Best buddies to the end, through thick and thin. That’s what they were and always would be. Emily looked into Lucky’s blue eyes, they were clear yet somehow different. He was different. As if reading her thoughts Lucky spoke.

“Being in a cage no matter how comfortable is still being in a cage. I had no sunlight, no fresh air and no one to talk too. No one I could trust. No one to comfort me or understand me. I’ve changed and it's obvious that Port Charles has too, in ways I don’t know so tell me Em.”

During his speech Lucky had gotten up from sitting on his bed, or what passed as it. When he spoke Emily saw the passion that was so much a part of the old Lucky. His eyes were no longer distant and the past slipped away and Emily started her tale. “I’ve already told you that AJ and Carly are divorced and Carly was living with Sonny, pregnant and planning on marrying him. AJ has started drinking again, Jason’s gone and everything seems to be off kilter.” Emily paused to gather her thoughts. How to tell him? “Who do you want me to start with?”

“My aunt Bobbie.”

“Okay. Bobbie was going to marry Jerry. On their wedding night he was arrested.” Lucky’s face changed and looked like he was going to speak. “Just be quiet and let me tell you what happened like I’m the local TV news personality, k’ay?”

“Sure.”

“Jerry skipped town, Bobbie stayed. Lucas took it hard, he really loved Jerry, but he’s better now. He’s seeing more of Tony and his happy about that and he’s playing baseball. Bobbie brags about it. Has your fa...did Luke ever tell you about Roy Dilucca?” Lucky nodded that he had. “Well he’s not dead. Like you he came back.” Lucky look at her funny like he was going to speak again. “Shut up. Remember just listen, ask questions after I’m done.” Lucky shook his head telling her he understood. He had forgotten that Emily could be fierce. “He and Bobbie picked up where they left off. Bobbie seems happy, but also worried about something but I don’t think it's about Carly. I think Roy’s in some kind of trouble, I’m not sure why. He hasn’t been around for a few days. But I don’t know anything for sure. Next?”

“Nikolas?”

“Well, he though Katherine was pregnant and he planned on marrying her.”

“What!?”

“You knew about the relationship. She tricked him into thinking that she was carrying his baby, she wasn’t it was a ploy together him to marry her and separate him from all of us. She wanted to be his whole world.”

“You said he planned on marrying her...so he didn’t?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“She fell off the parapet, again.”

“You’re kidding right?”

“Nope. This time she was pushed a least, you know Katherine she has to have variety in everything.” They burst into laughter.

“Who pushed her?”

“That’s undecided, there are some suspicions but no one at the PCP has decided on. So what else do you want to know?”

“More about Nikolas.”

“Well Nikolas is the heir. Blood proves it.”

“Wow!”

“Now he works at L&B while he’s learning how to run Cassadine Industries.”

“Cool. Anything new on Lulu?” Lucky felt bad asking this since he was seeing her, but Emily couldn’t know that.

“She’s still good. She loves having Lesley living at the house. She misses you, but everyone does their best to keep you alive...”

“It’s all right Em, I get the picture. How about my best friend?”

“Well, Liz knew the night of the fire that something was wrong with you. Somehow she knew and she went there. It was really hard on her. For awhile she couldn’t cry or believe and then on day she fell a part. It was really hard but she been getting better. Her art classes have helped take her minds off things. She started a friendship with Jason before he left. Nikolas thought something more was going on, but there wasn’t, he was just being over protective. She’s been spending a lot of time with Lulu and...”

“Em.”

“Yeah?”

“I meant you. Last time this year you were my best friend were you not?”

“Yeah. Sorry. I thought you meant...well never mind what I thought. Jason leaving was hard. I miss him so much. I give anything to see him again. Right now I don’t know whether to hate AJ or pity him. I hate that he’s drinking and I don’t know what to do. I can’t think of a way to help him.”

“Em that’s not your job.”

“I know it just hurts.” Lucky got up and walked over to her. Putting his arm around her for support. “Thanks I needed that.”

“You're welcome.”

“I hate how the past year has effected the family. Ned quite ELQ.”

“You’re kidding?”

“No.”

“Well, he’ll back soon like every other time.”

“No he won’t. It’s for good this time. He even has a sponsor.”

“A what?”

“A sponsor. Alexis, she keeps his head straight about the Q’s and he does the same with the Cassadines.”

“Cool, I think.”

“Yeah he finally got away, but grandfather hurt him a lot when he handed ELQ to AJ, who’s crashed and burned, hurting all of us. Michael is gone. Monica and Alan are fighting more than usual and Lila upset. Sounds like the normal life at the Q’s but its different. Grandfather’s desperate because Jax is going after ELQ and he doesn’t have Ned, AJ or Jason. The worst thing is all his mechanism as cost the family them; its cost me them.” Emily began to cry and Lucky held her; minutes past that turned into about a half-hour. Emily looked up at the clock. “Oh my gosh, look at the time. I have to go. I still have so much to tell you.”

“Next time. Promise.”

“And next time you’ll have to tell me what happened to you.” Looking at his face Emily felt bad, but continued, “Promise me.”

“Promise.”

“Want me to bring you anything?”

“Ribs and cheese fries from-”

“Eli’s!”

“Right. Bye, Em.” Lucky pulled her into a hug.

“Bye, Lucky. I won’t forget the food or something for one of your walls.”

Emily walked out of the room feeling better. Lucky wonder how he could get out of telling her what happened to him next time.

Sonny sat on the couch in the penthouse. The last year had played havoc oh him. He fell in love with a FBI agent, betrayed his best friend and now Carly was pregnant with his child. He wasn’t sure where he had gone wrong. Was it with falling for Hannah or sleeping with Carly? Or maybe it was coming back to Port Charles at all. Maybe he should have stayed on the island. It would have been better for Jason and everyone involved if he had never came back. But he wouldn’t change it for anything and he knew that. He was going to have a child. No matter what, whom he hurt he wanted his child. It cost him Jason and any chance to find love, he knew he could never love Carly no matter how much he had come to enjoy her company.

He was surprised that Emily had come by. He knew that Jason leaving had hurt her a lot and he knew she blamed him and Carly. He couldn’t blame her, but he didn’t appreciate the way she last talked to him. He didn’t expect an apology.

“Michael wanted to say good night to you Sonny. Right Mr. Man.” Sonny looked up to see Carly’s smiling face coming down the steps with Michael in her arms, she was just beginning to show. His family. He was just becoming comfortable with how possessive he was of them.

“Hey, Michael you tired already?” Carly handed him over to Sonny. Holding the child in his arms was wonderful. Sometimes he felt as if he didn’t deserve love from Michael, yet at the same time experiencing it was preparing him for what it would be like with his own child.

Carly watch on as Sonny held her son, absently rubbing her stomach. Sonny was speaking to Michael but Carly was to deep in thought to hear what he was saying. This wasn’t how she pictured her life; she thought she and Michael would be with Jason. She made one stupid choice and lost him and their life. She hated Sonny at first, but lately she like him. She trusted him and was loyal to him. She realized that she would protect him. Not because she was beginning to like him but because he was the father of her child. And now he was her friend, fiancée and future husband.

“Carly, earth to Carly.”

She jumped. “What?”

“Are you ready to go to bed?”

“Yeah. Come on Mr. Man. What bed time story to you want tonight?”

“Monsters!”

Snuggling him closer. “It’s always monsters.” At that Carly and Sonny began to laugh they headed up stairs like they were a regular happy family--though neither would admit to it or liking it.

The next day Emily sat on a couch at L&B speaking to Liz when Juan came in. He watched his girlfriend talk animatedly to her best friend. Juan knew that Emily was trying to keep to keep Liz’s spirits up since she and Nikolas came back without Lucky. From the way they all talked about Juan didn’t know if he couldn’t wait to meet the guy or be jealous. Emily always got this look on her face when she spoke about him; it was a looked that worried him. Emily already told him not to worry Lucky was a friend. Yet he still worried. Sometimes he wondered why. With all the support she had given him he knew how Em felt. May be what was bugging him was that no really thought he was good enough for her expect Liz, Taggart and may be Ned. She hadn’t listened to anyone else, but he knew from the way she talked about him that she valued Lucky’s opinion. If Lucky didn’t like him or think he was good enough would Em believe him? Would he lose her? It was stupid to think that he knew, but he couldn’t help it. Anyway Em always said that he and Lucky would get along, beside the guy was still missing so he shouldn’t worry. Besides everything was going his way. He had Em, he had new friends and now finally he had his record contract and he couldn’t wait to tell his girlfriend. Juan walked up behind Emily and placed his hands over her eyes. “Guess who?”

Emily smiled. “Joshua Jackson.”

“Who?”

“You know the cute guy from Dawson’s Creek.” Juan made a groaning sound. “Of course he’s not as cute as my boyfriend.” At this Emily swung around and wrapped her arms around him. After an all to brief kiss. “You look extremely happy today, why?”

“I got great news!” Juan kissed her again. “Hi, Liz.”

“Hi Juan.”

“Yeah when do we get the happy news?”

“Soon. Don’t you want to guess?"

“I already played that game and lost so please just tell me.”

“I don’t I own you for that Dawson’s Creek thing.”

Liz rolled her eyes at them; they were being way too cute. “Juan please just tell her.”

“All right. Ned got a distribution deal, which means he has the money to back me now!”

“Wow! That’s so great! I knew you could do it! Congratulations!” Emily threw herself into his arms.

“That’s great Juan congrats.”

“Thanks Liz, but I couldn’t have done it without my girlfriend.”

Nikolas stared out at his grandmother’s yacht. He hated the idea of being on it, near her and speaking to her, but he had to do it. He had to find Lucky. So many people he loved were hurting because of his family when they didn’t have to be. His mother, sister and grandmother, Emily and Liz. Liz. Over the past year Nikolas for feelings for her had deepen to something more. He wanted more than friendship. It could have happened given time, but it was impossible now. Lucky. His brother was alive. He wanted his brother back no matter the cost. Liz was the cost, one he coming to term paying. He could put his feelings aside, hell he learn for the master how to do that, what matter was Lucky. Finding him and getting him back. He lost the potential relationship with Liz, but he would get his brother back. So for his brother and everyone else’s sake Nikolas board the boat that would take him to his grandmother.

Laura paced around her living room. She had been at the hospital earlier but had come home to look over trains, planes and buses’ passenger list, hoping to find a trace of Lucky. She had no luck. It seemed as if her son had fallen off the face of the planet. She knew he was alive, she saw him, but now neither she nor Luke could find him. Why was he hiding? What had happened to her son that would make him hit his father and treat her like a strange? What had Helena done to him? How could she fix it? Could she? She damn well couldn’t if he couldn’t be found. At the point of tears Laura sat down to calm herself. Luke is still out there and he’ll find Lucky. He won’t stop until he does. This made her feel better; Luke always made her feel better. Some how she would fix what went wrong with them and she would have her family again.

Nikolas stepped into his grandmother’s main room disliking being this close to her.

“Nikolas, darling. How nice to see you.”

“Cut the pleasantries grandmother! Where is my brother?”

Chapter Three

“Frankly, my dear I’m getting tired of defending myself. First I’m a kidnapper when I save Lucky from Faison and now I’m keeping him from returning to Port Charles, when I let him go when I knew it was safe and he asked to leave. Really Nikolas what do I have to gain from keeping Lucky away from Port Charles?”

“How about hurting Luke and Laura for one? You blame them for the deaths of Mikkos and Stravos, you love to get back at them for that reason.”

Helena chuckled. “Really, Nikolas, no matter how much I want my revenge against the Spencers I would not risk losing you. What good would it be got me to keep him away if it angered you?”

“It simple grandmother, you don’t want me you want the Cassadine fortune. I promise you this you won’t ever get your hands on the whole of the Cassadine fortune again. Stefan and I cut you off from a good deal of your funds and once I come of age you can expect the rest to be gone soon after.”

“Nikolas...”

“Don’t . Stay away from me and the people I care about. I don’t want to hear from you unless you’re going to tell me the truth about my brother.” Nikolas turned to leave when Helena reached out and touched his arm. Nikolas jerked away violently. “Don’t,” he said in a quiet lethal voice. Taken a back Helena stopped and watched him stormed out of the room.

Her plans were going a wire. The Spencer boy was no where to be found and her plan couldn’t work without him. Well if Lucky wouldn’t come to Port Charles on his own, she would force him here by any means necessary. “Anderas.”

A young good-looking man walked into the room. “Yes, Madame?”

“Call our special friend and tell him it’s time to find the Spencer boy.”

“Yes, Madame.” As quickly as the man entered he left.

It would only be a matter of time before her man found Lucky and than her revenge could begin and she would have her grandson right were she wanted him.

Jax sat in front of his computer watching numbers of the foreign markets fly buy. His plan to take over ELQ was in full swing. He had already acquired AJ and Tracy’s stock, which had given him a third of the stock. He was planning on using it to his advantage as the board meeting by placing himself as CEO of ELQ, he knew it was a big step and he knew that it could cost him a lot. Chloe would be upset and it might led Ned to join Edward to take the company back, which could be come a big problem. Though he wouldn’t admit it out loud, Ned had become his friend and fighting against him wasn’t something he wanted to do, but if it came down to that he wouldn’t allow that to distract him. He would get ELQ no matter the cost.

Nikolas stepped off the launch. He thought about going to L&B, he had a meeting with Ned in a few hours about the Eddie Maine concert but he knew Ned had a meeting with Juan about his sing career. He didn’t want to deal with that today. Nikolas sat down on the bench and looked out at the water. He should have known that his grandmother wouldn’t get any information from his grandmother. He knew everyone was looking for Lucky and no one seemed to be able to find him. He didn’t know what to do. Everyone he cared about was hurting and it was because of his family and their insane obsession with the Spencers.

His uncle was obsessed with Laura and his grandmother wanted revenge for deeds that happened long ago. He sat there fuming. He hated his family; he hated being a Cassadine. All they did was hurt the people they loved. That was his legacy—hatred, a hunger for power and pain. No Cassadine seemed to be able to escape it. Alexis was trying but Stephen was constantly drawing her back in. No family member was safe; his family was like a trap that was inescapable. To involved with his thoughts he didn’t hear Emily approach.

“Nikolas are you okay?”

“Hmm...” Nikolas looked up seeing whom it was he smiled at her. “Hi, Em did you say something?”

“Yeah, I asked if you were okay, but obviously something is bugging you. So what’s up?”

“Cassadine stuff you wouldn’t understand.”

“Please. Nikolas remember that I come from the only family who can come close to matching the weirdness of the Cassadines. Remember the Quatermaines are no picnic.”

“Better than the Cassadines.”

“I won’t try to argue that, but I can probably understand.”

“I don’t think so.”

“Try me?”

“All right, my grandmother and possibly my uncle kidnapped my brother. Held him hostage for a year doing who knows what to him while everyone thought he was dead. Here’s the real kicker, now my grandmother professes innocence and my brother is no where to be found. Top that!”

“Okay. My older brother is responsible for the accident that caused my other brother’s brain damage. After the accident my brother got involved with the mob and with Carly. Fast forward a year or so. Carly is pregnant with AJ’s child but everyone thinks its Jason, nobody is the wiser. Jason raises Michael as his own with various kidnapping attempts made by my family and others. The truth comes out and a custody battle ensues. AJ marries Carly, who’s still stuck on Jason and they get shared custody. Instead of pulling Michael around from house to house Jason gives him up and AJ gloats. He rides it high until Carly sleeps with another man and gets impregnated by him. And who is that man? Sonny, Jason’s best friend. Because of this Jason leaves town. AJ loses his son, wife and business, which caused him to start drinking again. Hurting the entire family. Then he sells out ELQ to Jax. Here’s the kicker he still blames Jason for everything!”

Nikolas looked over at her after her long speech and the two begin to laugh. It gets louder and louder, soon they are laughing uncontrollable. “It’s tie,” Nikolas yells as the laughing fit continues for a few more minutes. “God, I needed that.”

Emily smiled over at him. With the laughter still in her voice she tells him. “So did I. You know we should start a support group for people with neurotic families.”

Nikolas laughed at that. “I think we're enough for an entire group.”

“I thing you might be right about that.” Emily smiled at him again before she turned to look out at the water. “Did you just get back from seeing your Uncle?”

“No my grandmother.”

“What!? Why would you go see her?”

“I hoped she would tell me were Lucky was.”

Emily turned away so Nikolas wouldn’t she her guilt. “She wasn’t helpful I take it?”

“Is she ever? Yeah! Why aren’t you with Juan” as Nikolas says Juan’s name his tone of voice changes to one of dislike and disapproval “at his big meeting?”

“Nikolas I wish you wouldn’t take that tone when you speak about or to Juan.”

“Sorry. But that doesn’t answer my question.”

Emily bit her bottom lip, she couldn’t tell him the truth as much as she wanted to tell him and everyone else. The truth might cost all of them Lucky. “Hello. Earth to Em.” Nikolas said as he way his hands in front of her face.

“Uh? Sorry about that. I already made plans with Lila, if I would have known I’d be there.” Another lie she thought bitterly. “I’m running late so I should get going. I’m sorry that your grandmother won’t help.”

“Don’t be. Anything she says would probably be a lie. Bye, Em.”

“Bye.”

Stefan sat in his study waiting for Alexis. They were going to be having a meeting with the doctor who examined Lucky soon; of course she didn’t know that yet.

“You know I really hate being summoned like this. No warning, just Alexis come. You need to stop doing that” she told him forcefully as she entered the room.

Stefan looked up at her from his chair behind his desk. She was the sister who he believed to his cousin for most of his life. No matter what she always there when he needed her. At one point she have plotted against him. She even worked with his worst enemy, Luke Spencer, but she came through when needed, she always would. Though he would never admit he counted on her, she was one of the few constants in his life. She would complain but she get over it, she always did. “We have a meeting.”

“What! With who? I’m not up for another round with the police.”

“It’s not with the police.”

“Then who?”

“He’ll be here shortly.”

Alexis sighed. She wouldn’t get anywhere with him. She set down her briefcase and went to pour herself a class of water. She didn’t understand why she always came when he called. When she needed him he let her down and it wasn’t like he ever called unless he needed something. Some where along the way they had stopped confiding in one and other. They had stopped being friends. She looked over at him now and couldn’t help but worry. With that worry came the urge to help him. She knew no matter what he did or didn’t do she would always help him. Whether that was good or bad she didn’t know but she couldn’t help herself. “I guess I’ll make myself comfortable” she said as she sat down on the chair facing him.

Liz sat in the main room of L&B she knew that she should be going through Chloe’s messages, but her thoughts were on Lucky. She was mixing past and future. She thought of their first kiss and then thought of kissing and holding him in her arms when he came home. It was still a strange thought, Lucky coming home. Lucky being alive. She let that wonder overshadow her worry of why he was staying away. It was better to think of the good than the bad, she couldn’t handle the bad now.

Nikolas walked into L&B and his breath caught at the sight of Liz. Beautiful. That's what came to mind. She was simply the most beautiful thing in the world and she was his brother's. Shaking the thoughts from his head he said hello. Liz looked up, Nikolas had interrupted her daydream and she was still lost in them when she returned the greeting.

“Are you all right, Liz, you look a little...I'm not sure, but not quiet right.”

“Oh, I fine. I was just lost in thought.”

He smiled. “Sorry I disturbed you.”

“That’s all right I should get to work. By the way Ned told me to tell you that your meeting would start late.”

“Why? Never mind let me guess. Juan.”

“Nikolas! You need to stop that, Juan’s a nice guy and Em’s boyfriend.”

Nikolas rolled his eyes. “That’s the second time today I’ve heard this. I don’t have to like the guy just be civil.”

“What do you mean second time?”

“I saw Em on the docks. I guess she was cutting through there to go meet Lila...” Nikolas stopped.

As if reading his mind Liz ask. “Why would she do that? The Quatermaine mansion is in the other direction.”

“Maybe she need to pick something up. Anyway she told me the same thing towards the end of our conversation. I don’t get what she sees in the guy.”

“You sound jealous.”

“Stop it Liz. You know Em is like a little sister to me. I swear if Lulu ever gets involved with a guy like him I'll live up to the Cassadine reputation of getting rid of people.”

“Nikolas!”

“Sorry wrong thing to say. I’m...I’m such an idiot.”

Liz was still a little on edge about the allusion, but she knew Nikolas wasn’t like that. “It’s okay, but you realize that Lulu won’t like that protective act you’ve got going forever."

“I know, but between me and Lucky well keep the bad guys away.” One look a Liz’s face and Nikolas knew he had just made an ass of himself again. “I can’t seem to keep my foot out of my mouth. Sorry. Again. Tell Ned I’ll be in my office.” Nikolas headed up stairs.

“I will. And Nikolas...” he turned around and look down at her.

“Yeah?”

“It okay, I think like that too. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one.”

Nikolas nodded at her before turning around. Liz watched him go. She knew he wanted Lucky back as much as everyone else did. Liz sighed. Everything felt like it was at a stand still, like they were all waiting for Lucky to come back to starting living again.

“You don’t think that Helena could have brainwashed him, do you?” Alexis waited impatiently for Stefan’s answer.

“You know as well as I do that she is capable of anything.”

“But, brainwashing?”

Stefan sighed. It seemed impossible, but with Lucky’s behavior it made sense. The doctor wasn’t an expert in that field, but he said it could he a possibility and it fit his mother so well. The perfect revenge. Being in control of Lucky. Messing with his mind to mess with Luke and Laura’s. It was sick and that was Helena’s MO. “Alexis, it’s not a sure thing just a possibility.”

“I know, but it sounds so like her. Think about it. She could control Lucky with just a word. She could torment them all for years if it’s true.”

“I know that.”

“So how do we stop that.”

“It’s not your job to undo Helena’s damage.”

“Stefan.”

“Alexis we can’t do anything until Lucky’s found.”

“So find him.”

“I’ve been trying. I can’t find him, Helena can’t even Luke can’t.”

“Well we got to find him so that we can clear your name and undo any damage Helena’s done.”

“I know. I’ll make some calls. We’ll find him before Helena does don't worry.”

Alexis couldn’t help not to. A lot people’s happiness lied with getting Lucky back the way he was; Luke, Laura, Nikolas, Liz, Lulu, Emily and the list went on and on. Almost everyone had some feelings for the boy and if he was brainwashed--if he was another person everyone would suffer and Helena would love that. “So help me God we’ll stop her.”

“Yes we will.”

AJ sat at the bar of the Port Charles Grill swirling his glass of Vodka. It would the first of the day and he was trying to decide if he should sip it or gulp it down. At hearing grandfather bellowing at the headwaiter he decided to gulp. “Bar tender another one please.”

“Yes Sir.”

“Don’t pour him another thing. If you do you’re fired.”

AJ turned around to face his grandfather. With a smile on his face he began his attack.

“Grandfather I thought you only threaten the help in private to keep up your less nice appearance so that people wouldn’t think you’re the tyrant you are.”

Edward Quatermaine stared at his eldest grandson. “As if you have any right to make snide comments. You’re a traitor! Selling out your own family.”

“What has my family ever done for expect place me second and underestimated me?”

“Your wrong about that AJ. If anything we’ve overestimated you.”

“Edward enough” said Lila in a strong but loving voice. “AJ dear its good to see you.”

“You too grandmother.”

“The least you could do is go drink some where else so your grandmother and I don’t have to watch you throw your life away for the billionth time.”

“Lovely as always to see you grandmother.”

“You too dear.”

“As for you grandfather you should be spending more time with ELQ because you won’t have it for very much longer.” With that AJ walked away tuning out any come backs Edward could come up with.

“Ingrate!”

Laura walked into her living room. She was tired and worried. No news from Luke. No Lucky. It seemed like everyday Lucky was slipping further and further away. She was afraid that she never see her son again.

The house was quiet. Lulu was at the park with her mother. If wasn’t for Leslie, Laura wasn’t sure if she would have made it through this past year. She had seemed to lose almost everything. Luke. Lucky. The man she thought Stefan was. She would get her son back and there was a chance with Luke if Felicia was telling the truth about wanting her family back. She knew that she could fight for and win Luke back, but truth she was so emotionally and physically tired that she wasn’t up to that kind of battle.

Laura walked over to the mantle and look at the photos. A picture of her and Luke together smiling and happy. The next was one of Luke, Lucky and herself. Then one of Luke and Lucky. The next was of Lulu and the one beside that was of the whole family. The last was of her children, all three together; it was the only one she had. Not for long. She promised herself the first chance she got once Lucky was home that she would get more pictures of her children together. And maybe if she was lucky she could get one of her family together--Luke, Lucky, Lulu, Leslie, Nikolas and herself. Both Luke and Nikolas would protest but she, Lulu and Lucky could finagle them into some how.

Tears began to roll down her face. For sadness or hope she wasn’t sure. Turing to go upstairs she saw the blinking light on the answering machine. Hoping there was a message from Luke she hit the play button.

Nikolas voice came first. “Hi, mom. I wanted to tell you I went to see Helena.” Laura flinched at that. “Of course she was no help and had the audacity to lie about what really happened. What else is new? I don’t want you to worry. I’m fine and told her to stay away from me and everyone I care about so let me know if she gives you any problems. Okay? Tell grandmother I said hello and Lulu that I love her. I love you mom. I’ll call back.” Laura smiled her son was turning into a fine young man.

Liz’s voice was next. “Hi Laura I was calling to see if there was any news, of course if there was you’d have called me. Don’t mind me I’m just getting nervous.” Laura understood that, she was getting antsy too. “I was hoping to stop by tomorrow to see you and Lulu, just call and tell me when its a good time. Bye.”

The third message brought the voice she wanted to hear, but not the news. “Hi Dar’lin. I’ve been looking all over for princess’ present and haven’t been able to find it. I’m out of place to look. I figure I’d come home for a few days so I can think of something else. I’ll be home in two days. Give princess my love. Don’t worry babe will find Lu...will find that something special soon. I promise.”

Laura sank down onto the couch. No Lucky. He hadn’t found him. How was that possible? More tears slipped down her face. Taking deep breaths to calm herself; Laura thought able being stable for when Lulu got home. She knew Luke wouldn’t stop looking, neither would she. They would find Lucky. They would be a family again. It would just take time.

Chapter Four

Emily stood in front of Lucky’s door weighed down with packages. In one bag she had one of Tammy’s homemade pies from Kelly’s, in another she had enough ribs and cheese fries to make her and Lucky sick and in the last package she had picture for Lucky to hang on his wall. Well actually it was framed poster, she had found it while going through some old things at L&B and she was sure Lucky would love it; she also hoped that it would remind him of the past he seemed to have forgotten about. The past filled with happy memories and people who love him, people who would love to see him now. Unable to knock Emily was unsure of what to do. Eureka, she thought just before she kicked the door. She was thankful that she had decided to wear her tennis shoes instead of sandals.

Lucky had smelled the ribs from his tiny bathroom where he was cleaning up; he had headed for the door before he heard what could pass for as a knock.

Opening the door and seeing Emily loaded down with bags he wondered how she had knock. “Hi, Em.”

“Don’t hi me, Lucky Spencer. Take one of these bags before I drop cheese fries all over the place!”

Lucky moved quickly to save the food from falling out of her hands. “I knew food would get you moving.” Lucky laughed as he took the other bag from her hands leaving her to deal with the framed poster.

“What else did you bring?”

“A pie from Kelly’s,” at that Lucky made a yummy sound “and something to put on your dull walls.”

“Forget the walls let's eat. I’ve been dreaming about Eli ribs for months.”

Emily was going to say something at that, but thought better. He had been gone for a year. He probably craved many things during that time. She would start with food and work her way up to people. She could picture the future--Lucky and Liz reunited, Juan and her happy, Nikolas finding someone and all of them being friends. The thought made her smile.

“Em, are you going to stand there with that silly look on your face or eat?”

“Eat” she said before she fell to the floor to stuff her face with her best friend.

“Nikolas you’ve done a great with the promotion for the concert.”

“Thanks Ned, but it was pretty easy. A lot of people were very happy to hear about the return of Eddie Maine and were very accommodating.”

“Don’t underestimate yourself Nikolas. You’ve done some fine work.”

“Thanks Ned. I really appreciate it. But what I’m really looking forward to is the turn out at the concert.”

Alexis had walked in hearing this remark. “Nikolas you already know that the venue is sold out.”

Nikolas turned and smiled at his aunt. There had been times when he hadn’t trusted her and times when he hated her and of course times when he loved her. The issues of her true parentage and his had effected their relationship, but they had been able to rebuild. He now trusted, respected and admired his aunt. “I know that Alexis, it will just be amazing to see the room packed with all those Eddie Maine fans cheering Ned on.”

“Don’t remind me. I don’t think I ready for it yet.”

“Don’t worry honey. You biggest fan will be back stage cheering you on no matter what the other ones do.”

“Thanks” Ned said sarcastically. Alexis smiled at him deviously before she walked over and planted a kiss one him.

“There’s more of them if you quit acting like your facing a death squad instead of a looming concert.”

Nikolas seeing the sparks light in Ned’s eyes knew he should leave before he ruined the promised fun. “I have to go. See you guys tomorrow.” Nikolas turned and heard murmured good-byes through kisses. He walked out of L&B thinking how lucky Ned and Alexis were and how one day he hoped to find that kind of love and happiness. Of course he had one big problem the one problem, the person he wanted that with was his brother’s girlfriend.

Emily laughed. “Lucky you have sauce on your forehead!”

“So what you have it on your nose.”

“Well at least I don’t have cheese on my shirt.” Emily surveyed the damage. “I can’t believe we ate all that!”

“I can’t believe that’s all you brought!”

“Ugh! I feel like I’m going to explode and you're still hungry. You know there is still pie?”

“Where!?”

“Behind you, you pig.”

Lucky began scaring down the pie. “I’m eating,” another bit of pie went into his mouth before he continued “you talk.” Another fork full of pie made its way into his mouth.

More pie was on its way to Lucky’s mouth when she asked “about what?”

“Anything.” Lucky said has he shoveled more pie into his mouth.

“I’m too full to think! And watching you eat is making me sick.”

After another bit of pie Lucky stopped. “All right I’m done after this last bit.” Emily groaned as more pie found its way into Lucky’s mouth.

Carly sat in the living room of the penthouse playing with Michael. Michael was playing with an airplane and was doing his best to make plane sounds. He was failing miserably, but wasn’t aware. After picking up another airplane Carly join in with the noise. Moving it through the air doing tricks. Michael followed the best he could. Seeing that his arms weren’t long enough, Carly lowered her plane and the two danced in the air. Sonny came and watched the magic of mother and son together with a smile on his face. He still had trouble believing how great a mom Carly was. He knew his daughter would have a mother that would love her, fight for her, protect her and be there for her. He knew that their children would never have to worry about one of their parents walking away from them. No matter what Carly would not leave them and neither would he. They would be a family. And with the friendship he and Carly were building they could be a happy one. Perhaps not one built on love, but one built with respect and trust and those were just as important.

“Sonny, do want to come join the air show or are you just going to stand there and watch” Carly asked. Sonny shook his head at her. He had some paper work to do, but he loved spending time with Michael.

“Why, not. But you do realize that there are only two planes.”

“Don’t worry, you can have mine.”

“I don’t want to interfere...”

“You're not. Michael and I have been playing all day. I think he enjoys a new playmate.” Sonny groaned at the term, but took the plane and began chasing after Michael’s. Carly watched the two men in her life and smiled. In fact she was ready to burst out into laughter when Sonny began making noises to sound like a plane. He shot her look and she waved at him. He winked back and continued to play with Michael except now Michael was chasing Sonny.

Watching this proved to Carly that they could do it. They could get married and be a family. A happy family. Sonny, Michael, their daughter and herself they would be a real family. The thought made Carly happy. All she ever really wanted was a family. She had tried with AJ but she hated him and he hardly ever saw Michael. For all that he talked about Michael being ‘his’ son, AJ never really acted like a father. His drinking now was proving that to her. The most important person to AJ was AJ. Sonny was different. He loved...Michael and the baby. Hell he was even being to like her. She knew that probably drove him crazy, but she had the same reaction at first when she started to like him. She didn’t want to like him, but she did. She trusted and respected him. She cared about and wanted the family he promised. It wouldn’t be love, because he didn’t love her and she loved Jason, but it would be friendship. That was more than she had with AJ and it was something she could live with and be happy with because her children would be happy also.

Carly's thoughts traveled back to the other night with Sonny. It was a good night. After they put Michael to bed they shared the rest of the night with each other, making love. Carly loved the way that Sonny touched her. Patient, sweet, tender and wild all at the same time. She had spent the night in his arms. He had let her sleep late, which was nice but she wondered what it would be like to wake up in his arms. It was silly she knew. She didn’t love him, but she cared about him. It wasn’t the kind of feelings she had with Jason, those only came once in a lifetime, but what she felt for Sonny was more than what she felt for AJ or Tony. Carly also knew that life with Sonny would always be interesting. A great friendship and her children’s happiness would be enough for her.

“It’s time for Michael dinner” Carly said just as Sonny turned the tables on the boy and was pursuer again.

“You’re just saying that so that Michael won’t be caught.”

Carly laughed. “Sonny you're one strange man."

“You're one to talk.”

With an exasperated look on her face Carly replied, “it is time for his dinner.”

“All right. He’ll eat, we’ll put him to bed and then go get some diner at the No Name.”

“Why?”

“We’re celebrating.”

“What?”

“Our daughter. And the beginning of our life together.” Carly smile down at Sonny. She would never figure him out and he would always surprise her. Plus he was so darn cute, mussed up from playing with Michael. Carly leaned down and picked up Michael.

“That sounds perfect.”

“Em are you all right in there,” Lucky yelled.

Emily voice came through the door sounding a bit off, “Lucky there is a door between us not a brick wall you don’t have to yell.”

“Sorry about that.”

“It's all right.” Emily stepped out of the bathroom. She hadn’t thrown up, but it was a close call. After she had taken a few deep breaths and washed her face she felt better. “I’m better now.”

“Good.” Lucky backed into the room allowing space to breathe. “I hate to think that I’m so horrible to be around that I make people sick.”

“Shut up Spencer” she replied wearily.

“I put the rest of the food away so you won’t have to look at it or smell it.”

Her face softening, “thanks Lucky. I really appreciate that.”

“You're welcome.”

Emily looked at the clock on the wall. “Damn!”

“What?” Lucky asked, surprised by the words and tone that she had used.

“I have to go soon and we haven’t had a chance to really talk. All I got was grunts through a full mouth.”

“Sorry about that Em. Next time...”

“I know next time we can talk and I'll make sure of it the only thing walking through that door will be me. Now open your present.”

“We will talk. Promise.” Lucky went over and picked up the flat, long object. “Finally! I’ve been waiting afternoon to open this.” Lucky tore open the paper eagerly, missing the look of joy on Emily’s face.

He looked so happy. So much like the Lucky he was last year. Emily knew that nothing could erase last year, but seeing Lucky like this gave her hope that they could move on from there. That soon Lucky would want to see Liz, Nikolas, Lulu, his parents and the rest of his family and friends. She knew that it would take time for everything to get back on track, but seeing his face while he opened the package gave her hope that everything would turn out as it was meant to--as it should have last year.

Lucky looked at the poster of Mary Mae Ward, it brought mixed feelings. He remembered her and her voice and how much he liked and admired her. And while the poster brought these memories back it also brought back the past with his parents. The good and the bad all together and he was unsure what to feel. “It’s...”

“Mary Mae.”

“I knew that. I was going to say that it’s nice. She looks beautiful.”

“Yeah. I remember going to the church to hear her sing with you. And then again at Luke’s after Lois convinced her to sing.”

“I remember that you were always afraid that we'd get in trouble for being at the club.”

“I'm better about that now.”

“Really?”

“Yes. The summer that you were de...gone we went to a lot of concerts. 98 degrees was at Jake’s, Claud had Boyzone at the club while Luke was gone and SheDasiy was at Luke’s when he was there.”

“How did SheDasiy end up playing Luke’s with him being there?”

“Well it was part tricking Luke and part that the group knew B.B. and he told them about the club and since they knew-”

“B.B. he let them play.”

“Yep. Well I gotta get going. You’ll hang it up?”

“Sure will.”

“See ya in a few days.”

“Bye Em.”

A Hospital Near the Coastline of Maryland

A young woman with dark brown hair that almost seemed black with a beautiful face laid in a coma. The doctors had no idea who she was or where she came from. She was admitted as Jane Doe, but the nurses found that name too plain for such a stunning woman, they nicknamed her Helen, for Helen of Troy. The name wasn’t much better but it was the ideal that the name inspired that the nurses were going for. It had been over year since a fisherman brought in the young woman and no one knew anything about her.

Her beauty brought the elderly fisher by once a week. He had taken on the role of father and protector and was this time conducting a search trying to find out who the silent woman was. Some of the nurses hoped that he wouldn’t succeed, they liked taking care of her. There was something about her, a inner beauty that was greater than her outward appearance. It shined through her state of unconsciousness.

One of the nurses once said that she looked like some model she saw in a magazine, of course if that was true there would be people out looking for her and she wouldn’t be Jane Doe known as Helen to the nurses. She wouldn’t be laying friendless and nameless in room 306 in a small Maryland hospital.

“Sir, we have been unable to locate the Spencer boy.”

“That is unexpected.”

“Mr. Cassadine we are trying our best but so far the boy as eluded everyone including your mother’s men and Luke Spencer.”

“A boy can not simply disappear off the face of the earth. He must be found. You and your team must find him before anyone else does.”

“We are doing our best, Sir.”

“Then do better. The boy must be found soon and he must be found by me.”

“Yes, Sir.” The man walked out of Stefan's office quietly and quickly.

Stefan sighed, before getting up to poor himself a drink. He did not want to find the boy so that he could deliver him to Laura and be the victor, he needed to find the boy before he did whatever Helena programmed him to do. He was certain that his mother altered Lucky’s mind in some way and it was not safe for the boy to be out in the world until he was free for Helena’s influence. He would find Lucky, cure him and send him on his way, his named would be cleared and then he could put the entire Spencer family behind him. He would finally give up the last remaining hold that his obsession with Laura had on him, but to that he would have to find her son.

Alexis smiled over at Ned as she buttoned up her blouse. “We have to stop doing this.”

“Are you nuts?”

“Ned! Get your mind out of the gutter. I meant we have to stop doing this here at L&B anyone could walk in.”

“Exciting isn’t it?” Before she could reply he dragged her into his arms and kissed her. “Want to go another round?”

The door opened and Chloe walked in. “Maybe it would be better if I was blind.”

“That’s not funny Chloe.”

“Sorry but as much as I love you guys this isn’t a scene I wanted to see.”

“Hey! I’ve had to walk in on you and Jax and I’ve never complained” Alexis stated.

“What!? You’ve walked in on them...Alexis.” Ned voice, which had started off in a strong tone, ended in a weak one.

“Oops!”

“I think I’ll leave while you guys talk about this.”

Alexis ran over and grabbed her. “Not on your life Chloe. I think we need you here to keep things...well sane.”

“Things will remind sane,” Ned shouted.

“Don’t take that Quartermaine tone with me” Alexis shot back.

“Sorry.” The room was quite. “You’ve seen them, Chloe’s seen us will just call it even and remember to lock the doors.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Alexis walked over to Ned and kissed him. “Me too. How about dinner?”

“Okay.”

“Chloe?”

“I’m meeting Jax.”

“Perfect we'll eat together.”

Chloe who was still a bit uneasy smiled at her friends. “Why not? PC Grill in an hour?”

“We'll be there and I promise that Ned will have his shirt on.”

Ned groaned. Chloe laughed. Alexis just stood and enjoyed the moment.

Jax stood and looked out of the penthouse window, the view of Port Charles was amazing. With everything that was going on it was nice to have a moment of calm where he could allow everything to slip from his mind.

A knock on the door broke the silence surround Jax. He hoped that it wasn’t Edward he was in the mood to deal with him now. Jax swung the door open to find a porter. “Yes?”

“A letter just arrived for you Mr. Jax. It was marked urgent.” The porter handed Jax the thin envelope.

Jax took the package. “Thank you.” Jax handed the man his tip and shut the door. By the outward appearance of the letter he had no idea whom it was from. Hoping that it was from a research doctor Jax tore the letter open. It was from Jerry. Jax’s eyes scanned over the paper and he laughed as he finished the letter. God, he missed Jerry. Jax walked over towards the window so he could look out at the city. His thoughts turned towards all of their escapades throughout the years.

When Chloe walked in Jax was standing near the window laughing. She noticed the piece of paper in his hand and wondered if that’s what had made him laugh. “Good news?”

Jax turned and saw Chloe; with a smile on his face he raced over and kissed. “A letter from Jerry.”

“Is that safe?”

“He made sure that there was no way to track it back to him and there is nothing in the letter that would harm me.”

“Good.”

Jax kissed her again. “So are you ready for a romantic dinner for two.”

Chloe smiled up at him sheepishly. “How about four?”

“Huh?”

“Ned and Alexis asked us to dinner and I said yes. They’ll be at the Grill in about an hour. I hope that’s all right.”

“It will be fine as long as they don't mind me not paying them any attention because I’ll be looking at you all night.”

Chloe laughed. “I don’t think that will be a problem since Ned will be doing the same with Alexis.”

“Sounds like a perfect evening, being with the woman I loved and ignoring a Quartermaine.

Chapter Five

Luke walked into his office at the club. The desk was filled with paperwork that needed to be done and the answering machine was blinking very fast, which meant he had a lot of messages. “Damn it DiLucca what you’ve been doing while I’ve been gone?” Rage built up inside him and he pushed the paperwork off his desk he then stride over to the buffet were he kept his liquor. He pored himself three fingers of whiskey and gulped it down. After refilling his class he went back over to his desk and hit the play button on his answering machine.

“Luke, it's Bobbie.” Her voice was tired and held a hint of fear. “Why the hell aren’t you answering your cell phone? I wish you were in town…Roy’s been arrested.”

The whiskey that Luke had just began to swallow came flying out of his mouth. “What the hell…”

"Before you make any assumptions it is not Sonny’s fault. Roy, well Roy’s an FBI snitch. And well he had a daughter to think about and Luke don’t be angry. There’s more going on but I can’t tell you about it over the phone. Call me!”

"You really know how to pick them Barbara Jean” Luke muttered.

There were about ten messages about bills being late. “As soon as I see Claude he’s fired!” Another message was about a band that he was considering having come play at the club. Luke winced when he realized that he should have called the woman two days ago. “I’ll be lucky if she willing play now, instead of her sweating it out if I’ll call her. I’ll just have to doubly fire Claude!”

“Luke. Are you there? It’s Felicia.” Luke didn’t know whether he wanted to groan in pleasure or in anger. “I was hoping you were back. I need to see you,” Felicia’s voice cracks, “everything has gone wrong. Mac has taken the girls to Texas and they don’t want to come back and they hate me. I don’t know what to do and I could use a sympathetic ear.” She was openly crying by this point. “When you get call me…I’m not sure if where I’ll be…I’ll have my cell phone with me…335-4242. Bye.”

Luke sighed. Why was it that everything was falling apart? His family and now Felicia’s. What was next?

“Hi Uncle Luke. It’s your favorite niece!”

“Great, I had to wonder!”

“I just wanted to inform you that you’re going to be a great uncle again.”

“That’s all the Spencer family needs another connection to the Quartermaines!”

“You should come by the penthouse sometime soon to congratulate me.” Luke’s mind screamed out three words ‘what the hell.’ “Sonny will look forward to seeing you…remember to call first I wouldn't want you to see us in a compromising position.” Before the message stopped he heard Caroline’s laughter. Sonny and Caroline—what I leave for a few months sporadically and everything turns upside down! What the hell is the matter with this town?

A few message form angry bill collectors played before last the message, which was recorded earlier that day. “Luke it’s Laura. I hope you’ll be home soon. Lulu misses you and I’m getting antsy. Now that neither of us is out there looking it feels like he’s further away then ever.” She sighed. “Luke maybe waiting for him isn’t a good idea,” she sighed again, “or maybe it is and I just feeling impatient. I just want him home. Come over to the house when you get back into town Lulu will be so happy to see you. I—bye Luke. See you soon.”

It was Luke’s turn to sigh now. His angel—no Laura, had sounded so sad over the phone. He understood her feelings of confusion and desperation. Why couldn’t they find Cowboy? Why had he disappeared on them? Why hadn’t he made any contact? Their son was out there with Helena Cassadine and Count Vlad on his tale, he wasn’t safe but yet he still hid from them. Luke had no idea why. Since his son’s death his life turn upside down and since finding out he was alive his heart was full again…he was alive again, but everyday his son stayed away his heart broke a little more. They had made their piece before he ‘died’ so why would he stay away. What had Helena, Stefan and Faison done to him? He knew of only one Cassadine that he could a straight answer from, but of course she was the only honorable in the family so she had no part in it but Count Vlad trusted her and she could get excess…hell it would be fun to partner up with Natasha again.

Luke smiled tomorrow he go see his princess and than he would pay two of his old partners a call.

Luke knocked on Alexis’ door. “Open up Natasha” he bellowed.

From her bed Alexis groaned. It’s a good thing Ned’s not here. Stumbling out of bed she reached for her robe, she looked at the time on the clock and cursed. This had better be good. She tied her robe as she headed out of the bedroom. Alexis swung the door open. “Spencer do you any idea what time it is?”

“Is lover boy here?”

Alexis rolled her eyes “no Ned is not here.”

“Good.” Luke leaned in and gave her a quick kiss. “You look damn good in the morning Natasha.”

Still in a confused state of sleep Alexis overlooked the kiss. “Just get in here you idiot.”

“I love a woman who knows what she wants.”

“You should be shot for waking me up at a quarter to six in the morning.”

Luke smiled at her coyly. “Another time perhaps.”

Alexis couldn’t help it she laughed. “Just tell me what you want so I can go back to bed.”

“That’s a little forward darlin’ but I’m up for bed if you are.”

Alexis grit her teeth. “Spill it Spencer.”

Still smiling Luke took on a more serious tone. “I’m here about my boy.”

Alexis’ eyes softened. “Luke…”

“I need some inside info on what mother bat did to my son.”

“I don’t know what I’ll be able to find.” It wasn’t a lie, but she wasn’t sure how much to tell Luke. She might not like him but she didn’t want to see him die at Helena’s hands and if he wasn’t thinking because of anger he would end up dead.

“Whate ever you could find out I’d appreciate it.”

“You’re welcome. Now get out so I can get started.”

“But I love watching you work Natasha, it’s so stimulating.”

Alexis laughed as she pushed him towards the door. “I call you when I get anything.”

“See you soon. Oh Natasha?”

“Yes, Luke” she asked exasperated.

“I’m looking forward to being partners again.”

Before Alexis could reply he was out the door. Alexis stood flabbergasted. Partners? The last time they were partners they’d ‘killed’ the wrong person! He was trying to bait me. I won’t let him. Alexis turned to the phone I’ll call room service for coffee and then look over the file I’ve been building for Stefan and see if there is any useful information for Luke.

AJ sat outsides of Kelly’s. He had a hangover. That didn’t stop him from adding a few nips of vodka to his coffee. AJ felt better knowing that he could drink. He had missed the feel of vodka going down his throat while he was sober. He laughed softly; there was no reason to stay sober now. His son, his job and his family were gone. Sometimes that was a relief; he could stop trying to be the perfect ‘golden boy.’ Black sheep suited him and it was so much easier being the family screw up.

Hannah walked out of Kelly’s and saw AJ. She wasn’t sure what to do, walk away or stop. She felt a need to help him--to save him from himself. She knew that Taggart didn’t like AJ, but she saw something in him that he tried to hide behind his attitude and his drinking--his goodness. “AJ?”

“Hannah, it’s nice to see you this morning.”

She walked closer to him. “You’re hung over.”

“Yes.” He sounded almost proud about it.

“You haven’t had anything yet this morning have you.”

AJ knew if he told her the truth she would walk away and that was the last thing he wanted. “No. Would you like to join me for breakfast?”

Hannah knew she was due at the station soon, but agreed anyway on the condition that it was a quick meal. AJ promised that it would be. They ate a quiet meal near really saying much. AJ enjoy having a friendly person sitting next to while he ate. It was quite a difference from meals at the Quatermaines.

“Would you mind if I walked you to work?”

Hannah smiled at him; he was a nice guy. He was just in a bad place and she was determined to help him. “That would be nice.”

AJ leaves a few bills on the table and the two head away from Kelly’s in companionable silence.

Emily sat in the living room of the Spencer house. She had stopped by to see Lulu so that she could give Lucky the newest information regarding his sister. She ended up being roped into baby-sitting. Laura had been called to the hospital to deal with an emergency with one of the youth outreach program, Leslie was with Amy for the day--Emily had volunteer to look after Lulu until three. Laura had asked if she could stay later, but she was due at L&B to watch one of Juan’s rehearsals--she had missed three already. She had felt bad about missing them but Lucky had needed her. Juan did too, but they had a lifetime and her best friend really needed her. She was the only person he was willing to see right now, she knew that Juan would understand; he had so far.

She and Lulu had spent the morning finger painting and reading stories. Emily had made grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch and now Lulu was upstairs changing into play clothes that they could go to the park and play on the swings. Emily laughed it had been almost a year since she’d been at the playground and longer since she had allowed herself to actually play there. She couldn’t believe that she was actually looking forward to playing in the park.

Luke stood before the door to his old house. It had been a home for awhile...the only one that he ever really had. There was a time that he was happy here with his wife and children, but then everything changed. Pride, anger and the past had cost him what he held dear--his family. He thought that he had moved on, but he missed what they had in this house.

That was the past and he had to let it go. Laura had moved on and so had he, well a bit. He had is club, his friends and Felicia--well he had something with her. One of the few bright spots in his life, his daughter was the brightest and best thing in his life. She brought out what little goodness he had in him and every time that he held her in his arms he felt peace. He was hoping at getting some when he held her today. He needed peace after his failed attempt to find Lucky and seeing Carly this afternoon.

Luke didn’t know if it was better that Sonny wasn’t there or not. It had been very hard not to strangle the girl, but Sonny would probably have socked him for some of the comments he made to her. “Ah, sweet Caroline you’ll be the death of all of us.” Luke shook off his thoughts of his niece and knocked on the door.

Emily heard the knock...not Laura. Maybe it was Nikolas or Liz. Emily got up and rushed to the door. She swung it open with a smile on her face. She saw Luke’s face, her smile didn’t fade but surprise came to her eyes. “Mr. Spencer...”

Luke had been surprised himself to see her answer the door, but it faded quickly. He hated it when she called him Mr. Spencer. “Emily?”

“Yes, Mr. Spencer?”

“Call me Luke.”

“Right. Luke, Mrs....I mean Laura went to the hospital one of the kids needed her there.”

“Leslie?”

“She’s with Amy.”

“Is the princess here?”

“Yes she’s upstairs changing so we can go to the park.” Emily than noticed the Luke was still standing outside. “I’m so sorry Mr...Luke come in.”

Luke smiled down at the young girl...no not girl, lady. She wasn't ten anymore running with Lucky all over the country or trying to sell worm farms. “Thanks.”

“Before Lulu comes down did you find...”

“No” he said sadly.

Emily nodded at him. She hated having to ask him about Lucky, since she knew where he was, but she had yet to learn why he was hiding. Some how she had lost track of time every time she went to see him and he had yet to tell why he didn’t want to come home. Why he was staying way from those who loved him. Before Emily could say anything Lulu came rushing down the stairs. “Daddy!”

Luke picked up the beautiful young girl and spun her around before pulling her close to him. Luke wasn’t sure who was holding on tighter--Lulu or himself. “Hello Princess.”

“I’ve missed you.”

“I missed you to sweetie.”

Lulu wiggled out of Luke’s arms and held back towards the stairs. “I’m going to get my tea set and will have a tea party. Okay Daddy?”

“I would love to Princess.” Lulu hurried up the stairs. “Emily I would like to have so time alone with Lulu.”

“All right, should I leave a note or something for Laura?”

“No. I’ll just tell her I kicked you out.”

Emily smiled up at Luke. “Whatever you think is best. Tell Lulu that I’ll come back later and will go to the park liked I promised.”

“Sure thing.” Emily picked up her coat and headed towards the door. “You don’t need a lift anywhere do you?”

“No. Goodbye Luke.”

Luke nodded his head at her. “Daddy?” Luke looked up and saw his daughter’s arms overflowing with a tea set and her stuff animals. Luke laughed and headed up the steps to help his daughter as he did so he wonder what mischief they would get into.

Emily stood on the steps of the Spencer home she was in conflict. She had two hours before Juan’s practice started, was it enough time to get to Lucky’s place, tell him about Lulu and Luke and get back in time so she wasn’t late? She was sure. Something told her that she wouldn’t have enough time and she had already been missing a lot of time with Juan and this was important, but something else was telling her that Lucky had to that Luke was back in town. Luke had almost a sixth sense about things and with Lucky so close; Luke could find him and Lucky might run. Emily couldn’t risk that Lucky would run the happiness of her two closest friends and Lucky’s family was riding on her. All she had to done was convince Lucky that he should see them and she needed time to do that. Shaking off the feeling that she was doing the wrong thing Emily headed for the bus stop that would carry her out of Port Charles and into the next closest town.

Chapter Six

“Paul,” called a man in his thirties.

Lucky walked out of the kitchen and into the main room of the bar. “Yeah?”

“Your little chick-a-dee left you a message.”

Lucky looked confused. “Who?”

“The girl who’s been sneaking up to your room.”

“Oh.”

“Listen, your private life is that, private.”

“Thanks, so what’s the message?”

“She needs you to meet her at the docks later tonight, she said it was extremely imperative that you showed up.”

"Thanks, you mind...”

The man smiled at Lucky, “just get out of here.”

“Thanks.” Lucky headed back into the kitchen and washed up. He wondered what was so important that Emily would ask to meet him in Port Charles. Hoping that everything was okay with Lulu he headed out the back door and started his journey towards Port Charles.

Elizabeth stood behind the counter at Kelly’s her mind was on Lucky and what Luke’s return meant. The customers had long given up on getting her attention and left, expect for a few who Tammy was serving. Tammy knew how upset Liz was so allowed her to side for the evening.

Luke and Laura had brought Lulu in for dinner. She had looked so happy, having both her parents with her. And Luke and Laura had looked happy to be with one another. Liz knew there were problems—Stefan, Felicia, the past and Lucky’s ‘death’ but the love was in their eyes and voices. She hoped that some way they would find their way back to each other. It gave her hope for her and Lucky. It had been a year. She was different, but her love for Lucky wasn’t. He was her missing half; her soul mate. Emily had to keep reminding her that their love could triumph over anything. Time and distance couldn’t change their hearts, only strengthen them. She tried to hold on to that thought and believe in it, but Lucky had yet to call or contact her. Nikolas told her that might be in danger and he was staying way from them to protect them. She held on to that too, because the alternative was that he didn’t want to see them that he didn’t want her in his life.

That was impossible for anyone else to believe, but it haunted her. The thought that Lucky wouldn’t love her anymore. She needed him, his love, like she needed air. When she thought he was dead she could tell herself that she felt his love, that he was looking out for her. But now that he was alive and staying away she couldn’t help but to question his feelings. Were they the same? Was he? When would she see him? Would it be the same between them? Emily was sure that it would be that they would look into each other eyes and be home. Liz expected that for herself, but was unable to predict if Lucky would feel the same. Before he ‘died’ they had always been on the same page, but the unknown awaited them on his return. If he ever returned.

Thinking that snapped Liz out of this state. Of course he would return; he needed time that’s all. Seeing that the tables were empty she walked and began to wash them down.

Nikolas watched Elizabeth from outside of Kelly’s. He knew from his mother that Luke was back and he also knew that Liz was aware of his return. He had been afraid of how she’d take it if Luke came back empty handed. She looked fine on the outside, but he knew that she was in turmoil on the inside. The past year had played havoc on all of them. It seemed as if everything changed after Lucky’s death. The world seemed less bright, Lucky brought happiness to so many and his ‘death’ made so many sad. His mother, sister, grandmother, Bobbie, Lucas, Luke, Liz, Emily and the list went on and on. His brother’s ‘death’ had turned the world upside down; his rebirth was doing the same.

Nikolas was ecstatic about getting a second chance with his brother, but his world was shifting drastically. One minute he had a brother, the next he was dead and he had his mother, sister and grandmother all to himself. The things that his brother loved, he cared about and eventually loved and that included Elizabeth. He hated himself for looking at her as more than a friend; he hated that fact that he fell in love with his brother’s girlfriend. But Liz and Lucky were more than that, they were soul mates. Meant to be and they would be right now if Lucky hadn’t disappeared. Nikolas often wondered what would have happened if Lucky hadn’t ‘died’ the night of the fire. Would he still be with Katherine Bell, if she were still alive? Would he be involved with L&B? Music was a love of Lucky’s. Nicholas knew that he didn’t choose L&B, L&B found him and he loved working PR, but a part of him enjoyed knowing that he was working in the music industry because Lucky was passionate about music.

Was he sick like his father? Or his uncle for that matter? Both wanted another man’s woman, and his uncle wanted his brother’s wife. Was he destined to follow in their footsteps? He hoped not. He wanted nothing to do with the twisted Cassadine legacy. He would not allow himself to fall into an old pattern and start a new war. Lucky was his brother and he loved him. Liz was his friend and he would damn well keep it that way.

AJ walked into the PC Grill; he wanted a stiff drink that would lead into a dozen more. He wanted to get drunk. He wanted to get so hammered that he couldn’t think straight. So he wouldn’t have to remember the picture of Carly, Sonny and his son at the park, being a family. They were his and Sonny stole them. He had nothing; not even his son’s love so there was no reason not to drink himself into a stupor.

Hannah and Taggart were enjoying a peaceful dinner at the Grill. Taggart enjoyed the way the light played on Hannah’s hair and eyes and he also enjoyed the way her purple dress fit, but importantly he enjoyed her. She was smart, funny and easy to talk too. He knew it was a risk, but it was one he couldn’t resist. The gamble seemed to be paying off. They were dating.

Hannah liked Taggart. It was more than that; it was the emotion between friendship and love. She knew that she could fall for him and part of her wanted that, but another part of her thought of AJ Quartermaine. Taggart was definitely more stable, but both were good men. Proud, strong, handsome, honest but AJ needed her. She liked that knowing that someone needed her. Taggart could take care of himself, but AJ was trying his best to ruin his life and she could help. But she knew that wasn’t smart or healthy. Taggart made her life and excited her. She wanted to be with Taggart and be a mother to AJ. She knew both would hate that, so she helped AJ when she could and spent her romantic energy on Taggart.

AJ watched the quite interlude between Hannah and Taggart. He was upset at seeing them so close. Hannah was a friend, but he had felt a glimmer of something between them. It was a false hope by the looks of things. Not wanting to deal with the happy couple he left to find another bar.

Liz felt the urge to paint. Her shift at Kelly’s was almost over and while the idea of going upstairs; taking a shower and crashing was very tempting, she knew that the urge was greater. Liz looked down at her watch, “Tammy do you mind if I leave a few minutes early?”

Tammy knew that Liz was upset because Luke was unable to find Lucky and all but two of the customers were gone, she didn’t see the point of keeping Liz here. “That’s fine, Liz.”

Liz smiled up at the older woman. Tammy was a sweetheart. “Thanks a lot Tammy. I really appreciate it.”

Tammy smiled back, “I know you do.”

Liz removed her apron and picked up her purse. “Goodnight Tammy.”

“Goodnight Liz.” Liz headed out of the door and headed for the docks, the quickest way to get to her studio.

Emily looked at her watch, she was running late and so was Juan’s practice. She had promised to stay through the whole thing, she was regretting it now. They had just started the same song over again for the umpteenth time and she was ready to scream. Who knew rehearsals were so boring? She loved Juan and the sound of his voice, but the same song over and over again! Her eyes darted to her watch again. Please wait Lucky, stay on the docks, be there so I can tell you that Luke’s home and that he can probably smell you by now. Emily laugh out loud at the thought and then eyed Juan. Good he didn’t hear it; the last in the world I need now is for him to thing that I was laughing at his song. Again her eyes fell to her wrist. Damn! Emily hoped that Lucky didn’t get into any trouble or even worse get spotted while he was on the docks waiting for her. The music ended and Emily looked up at him and smiled. “It’s sounding great.”

Liz was walking towards her studio and felt the cool breeze come off of the water. She stopped to enjoy the sent when suddenly her whole body screamed out Lucky. Her eyes popped opened and looked over the docks and fell upon the back of a man. She wanted to call out is name, from behind this man looked like Lucky, but she had made that mistake before. Yet, something within her knew as she knew herself that this was Lucky. Her love. Her soul mate. Her heart’s desire. Liz took shaky breath, which made the man turn.

Lucky had been waiting for Emily. She was running late. Nothing new. He had turned to watch the water. Being out worried him. He could be seen and being seen was something he didn’t want. He didn’t want to deal with his parent’s lies or his feelings for Elizabeth. It was nice being Lucky with Emily, it was like he was reclaiming himself. His mind had been in turmoil since Helena had let him go and he was unsure of what to do. It was if there was a voice inside his head directing him, he didn’t like it orders. Being with Emily helped, the voice seemed weaker and once he was able to control it, he could end his exile and be with the people he cared about. He smiled when he heard the person behind him, Emily. Funny he thought as he turned--she found him twice in the exact same way. He was about to utter a greeting when his eyes met Elizabeth’s face.

“Lucky,” Liz whispered. Her heart filled and all doubt ebbed from her mind. He was home. He was safe. He was here meeting her on the docks as they had done a thousand times before. She smiled as she stepped forward. Putting her arms around him she said, “Lucky, thank God you’re home.”

Lucky wasn’t sure what to do, his heart ached. To see her. To touch her. His arms came up around her. “Elizabeth,” he sighed quietly.

She was home. She was finally home. From the moment their eyes met and now in his arms she was home. “Lucky I love you.” Elizabeth pulled back and tilted her head. She stood on her toes to reach his lips and began to kiss him.

Lucky welcomed the words. They flowed over him and filled the empty places within him. The kiss was a surprise. At first he responded to it. It felt so good to close to her again. To feel her. To breathe her in. But then he felt like he hit a brick wall. His mind screamed that this was wrong. He broke away.

“Lucky what’s the matter?”

“This is wrong.”

“Wrong?” How could that be? Lucky was first thing in her life that was right. Their love was right. “How? What do you mean?”

“Elizabeth we can’t do this, it’s not right.”

“Of course it’s right. We are right together.” She said this as she stepped forward. As she did so he stepped back.

“This was a trick!”

“A trick?”

“There was no emergency. It was a lie to get me here to see you.”

“Lucky what are you talking about? What trick?”

“How could you...”

Liz broke in before Lucky could say Emily’s name. “I was on my way to my studio. Lucky what’s the matter.”

“You being here” he said coldly.

Liz flinched at that, why would he say that...he loved her love. Didn’t he? “Lucky...”

“Stay away from me.” Lucky began to leave the docks when Liz called out.

“I love you. Don’t go.”

Lucky turned back. Part of him wanted to go to her. To tell her he loved her. To kiss and hold her. But a voice within his mind was telling him to walk away. It was louder. Stronger. Without a word he turned around and left her on the docks.

He left. He was gone. He walked away. He didn’t say that he loved me. These thoughts were bouncing around Liz’s head was she stood there not moving. Not breathing. It seemed as her heart stopped.

He had been surprised. There had been happiness in his eyes when he saw her. He clung to her. He whispered her name. He kissed her. He loved her. Something was wrong. She began to breathe again. Something was wrong with him. Luke and Laura. They will know. He had behaved strange with them, so why not with her. A year. A year could do things to people, she knew that. She was different. It made sense that he was too. He had been held prisoner. What had that done to him? She didn’t know, but it had changed him. He needs time. He loves me. Forever. A permanent lock.

Liz knew she couldn’t stand on the docks all night. She had to go to Laura. Tell her Lucky was here in Port Charles. He was home and something was wrong, but some how together they would help. Lucky saw her through rape, she would see him through this and they would be strong. Their love could survive anything. Liz ran from the docks praying that Laura would still be awake.

She set him up. She lied to him. She broke her promise. She told. Why? How could she? He had trusted her. He had been wrong in thinking that because they once were close that he could trust her now. She had told him to be there on the docks waiting for her. Then she told Elizabeth to be there too. She tricked him.

Anger filled Lucky completely. “So much for trust. For loyalty.” He wondered if she would show up to see how her little plan worked out. Lucky headed back towards the docks so that he would be there to give Emily a piece of his mind.
