The Carburetors.

*The "D" and "E" engines used Breen- Taylor's own carburetor.*

*The "F" engines used Tillotson ML5A carburetors*

*The "H" engines and some of the "J" engines used Tillotson ML5B carburetors.*

*The early "J" used a Carter N665s And N666s..single adjustment carburetor*
    s/n 200 001 to 230 200

*The late "J" used a Carter N703s and N704s...double adjustment carburetor*
    s.n 235 201 to 235 999 and 237 001 up

* Some "J"s used a Tillotson ML5B carburetor*
    s/n 230 201 to 235 200 and 236 000 to 237 000

*The "300" used a Carter N703s or N704s*

* The "700", 500, and 600S used a Tillotson MT 12A carburetor*

    The intake manifold bolt spacing is different on the "H" and the other engines, and so the OEM Carter carburetors (N655 and N703)are not interchangeable with the Tillotson ML5B. The replacement carburetors (N666s and N704s)had elongated mounting holes, and will fit anything. "H" is spaced 1-5/8" , "J" and later is 1-13/16"

**Both Tillotson and Carter made carburetors for various small engines, some of which are similar to the Whizzer carbs. Some will fit and work well,others will not. The Whizzer venturis were 7/16 in diameter (14/32). On the Tillotson ML carbs, the diameter is marked inside the bottom of the float bowl in 32s of an inch. On the Carters, the diameter is marked inside the top of the opening above the choke butterfly. (12 o'clock position)

The MT12A carb venturi is 9/16 diameter (18/32). But remember, the 700 engines these go on have big valves and a large exhaust opening. Carbs from 13/32 to 18/32 will work. Too big an opening in the Venturi makes the bike hard to start and prone to stalling at low speed. There is a real fine line between enough choke to start the engine and enough choke to flood it. Smaller carbs kill the power. As far as I know, the Carter "N" carbs made especially for Whizzer are the only ones with a built- in inlet strainer.(Not so! Just found one off a REO engine with a screen on it. Has a 13/32 venturi)(11/29/00)
