SPRINTFREAK'S TRAVELS April 19, 1999

Well, the sprintfreak is back with another week of sprintcar news and results. It's been a wet! wet! wet! week. Not much on track action, but a lot of off track action to talk about. So let's get started!
First off, the big news of the week was Dale Blaney's announcement that he is leaving the Amoco #93. Most of the sprintcar world knew this was coming, it was just a matter of when. When just happened to be at Kentucky Lake Speedway on Friday night. Dale made it official by announcing he would no longer drive the #93 after Saturday's race at West Plains, and also said that the G-Man, Kevin Gobrecht will be taking over the Amoco #93 this coming weekend in Oklahoma. If you remember, in last weeks column I stated that the G-Man would be getting an All-star or Outlaw ride soon! Man, I love it when I'm right! Anyway, good luck to Kevin on the Outlaw trail, and also to Dale with whichever team he ends up with. Dale will be a winner again, mark my words!

Now, lets get to the results of last week's two poll questions.
First, which driver do you feel is the best in the country RIGHT NOW? And the results are:
1) Kevin Gobrecht 25% of the total votes!
2) Danny Lasoski 24%
3) Steve Kinser 15%
4) Mark Kinser 12%
5) Tyler Walker 8%
Some other drivers who recieved votes were: Fred Rahmer, Jeff Shepard, Jac Haudenschild, and Keith Kauffman. Several drivers only recieved a few votes.

The next question was, which track do you feel has the best local racing. And the results are:
1) Williams Grove 30% of the total votes!
2) Lincoln 21%
3) Knoxville 19%
4) Attica 14%
5) Tri-state 8%
Some other tracks who recieved votes were: Chico, Tulsa, Huset's, Eagle, and Selinsgrove.
Thanks for your participation in the polls, at the end of this weeks column will be two more questions.

Now with the results from this weekend, starting off with the World of Outlaws!
Kentucky Lake:
1) Johnny Herrera #1bk
2) Stevie Smith #19
3) Danny Lasoski #83
4) Sammy Swindell #1
5) Mark Kinser #5m
Danny Lasoski led the first 3 laps until Johnny "Hollywood" Herrera got by and went on to his second win of the season. I'm sure this made Herrera's car owners feel like they made the right decision by staying out with the Outlaws instead of running Knoxville.
West Plains:
1) Mark Kinser #5m
2) Danny Lasoski #83
3) Andy Hillenburg #2
4) Joey Saldana #17
5) Craig Dollansky #7
Danny Lasoski once again led early only to have Mark power by and go on to his fourth win of the young season! It was nice to see Andy Hillenburg up in the top five, Andy has started off slowly this year and a top five finish could spark Hillenburg, plus the Outlaws invade his home state this week! Look for a strong run out of Andy this weekend!
The All-stars got rained out this weekend which really disappointed me. The Coors Spring Nationals are one of my favorite events! They have been rescheduled as a one day show later this summer.
Good news for Kevin Huntley. Kevin suffered three broken vertabrae in his crash at Eldora last week, however, Kevin sustained no long lasting damage and will be in a halo for several months while his neck heals. Kevin is expected to make a full recovery and we should all thank GOD for that!
Current All-star points:
1) Jac Haudenschild 254
2) Danny Smith 230
3) Kenny Jacobs 228
4) Dean Jacobs 227
5) Paul McMahan 226
Friday it was Williams Grove action:
1) Kevin Gobrecht #11
2) Donnie Kreitz Jr. #69
3) Mike Wagner #55
4) Keith Kauffman #7
5) Dave Haight #10
The G-Man continues his dominance of the Grove this season by winning his thrid straight a-main in three appearances to the Grove this year. Donnie Kreitz gave chase, but just didn't have enough to stop the G-Man! By the way, Kevin started 15th and was in the lead by lap 11! The man is on a mission this year!
Lincoln:
1) Fred Rahmer #77
2) Lance DeWease #461
3) Dave Ely #77
4) James Chesson #22
5) Jeff Shepard #4J
Cris Eash and Kevin Gobrecht, who else?, were battling for the lead when Gobrecht slid up and under Eash making contact and sending the two of them spinning. Rahmer just happened to be sitting thrid and held off the rest of the field for the win. Rahmer admitted in victory lane that he didn't have anything for Gobrecht and Eash, but was happy to come away with the win! There were 39 sprinters on hand!
Selinsgrove:
1) Kevin Gobrecht #11 (do you get the feeling this guy is good?)
2) Fred Rahmer #77
3) Lance DeWease #461
4) Todd Shaffer #88
5) Keith Kauffman #7
The G-Man wins his ninth a-main of the year to show everyone that he is indeed ready to challenge the World of Outlaws! Look at that top five, thats the kind of top five any promoter would be jealous of! Kevin dominated this quality field of sprinters to win his first ever Selinsgrove a-main!

Now for the two poll questions for this week:
First, which driver most deserves at shot at the World of Outlaws who is not currently running with them on a full-time basis?
1) Frankie Kerr
2) Joey Saldana
3) Jeff Shepard
4) Terry McCarl
5) Skip Jackson
Choose any one of these drivers or any driver you feel deserves a shot with the Outlaws!

Number two, which car owner would be the best to drive for?
1) Karl Kinser
2) Al Hamilton
3) Guy Forbrook
4) Walt Dyer
5) Dennis Roth
Choose any of these owners or any owner you like, it's up to you!
