Introduction

Oslo is the oldest of the Scandinavian capitals. The Os-lo name is derived from the Norse words for ”God” and ”field”.
Oslo is a vast city (175 square miles) and also one of the world’s most prettily sited capitals, located at the end of the 110 km-long (70-miles) Oslofjord. Starting at the innermost shore of the Oslo Fjord, Oslo sprawls up the sides of the mountains that surrounds it.

The Norwegian capital is inhabited by a relatively small population (480.000) by Continental European standards, but still cosmopolitan. To visit Oslo is a celebration of contrasts. In fact, there is so much to discover and fill the day and night time hours with that many visitors end up extending their stay.

Oslo has a rural landscape, fantastic views as well as a vibrant city life. During winter, inhabitants and visitors can ski along an impressive number of ski trails. During summer, energetic visitors can enjoy sea activities on the island beaches just offshore in the magnificent Oslo Fjord as well as walking, running or biking in the Vigeland Park or on 1860 miles of hiking paths.

Throughout the City are enclaves of shops. On your list of ‘must visit’ should include GlasMagasinet shopping mall. Also enjoy a Fishermen’s Wharf type of atmosphere at Aker Brygge.

In Europe, Norway was a comparatively late bloomer on the cultural scene. However, Norway and Oslo can present an impressive gallery of artists from the last 150 years; notably Gustav Vigeland (sculptor), Edvard Munch (painter), Henrik Ibsen (writer) and Edvard Grieg (music).

Kongsberg is located approx 100 km west of Oslo. Rich veins of silver were found at Kongsberg in 1623 and a mining boom was to last for at least two centuries. At its height 5000 miners were at work. Today Kongsberg is a high tech town, but some of the wooden houses are still a picturesque part of town. Dominating the old main square is the big Kongsberg Church – the most baroque church in the country. A Mining Museum is housed in an old melting plant. The mines are located 8 km (5 miles) west of town and a little train takes visitors through the old tunnels.

eating and drinking in Oslo

Background
Eating and drinking places are mushrooming – more than 200.000 restaurant/café/bar/pub seats is impressive considering the size of the Oslo population. In addition to the long established restaurants that serve traditional Norwegian dishes or French food, a variety of ethnic restaurants have sprung up during the last decade or so. Fish has a prominent place in the modern Norwegian cuisine – do not leave town without tasting it.

Breakfast (frokost) is a fairly big and healthy meal. Most hotels have impressive breakfast buffets.
Lunch (lunsj) is usually a light meal consisting of open faced sandwiches. Visitors can also enjoy big buffet tables (koldtbord) where one can sample a variety of Norway’s culinary specialities all at once.
Dinner (middag) is eaten early (normally from 4 pm to 8 pm). However, in Oslo, you will find that dinners are served as late as midnight at a range of establishments during the summertime.
Wine, liquor and beer prices are high in Norway because of heavy taxation. Beside restaurants and bars, liquor and strong beer can only be purchased in state-owned shops (Vinmonopolet), during weekday business hours.

Breakfast is normally included in your hotel room price. Below are selected top picks for lunch and dinner as well as popular drinking spots: (only categories crossed out in Step 2 are included in list)

A. ”See and be seen” places
B. Gourmet dining
C. Seafood
D. French style
E. Norwegian style
F. American style
G. Italian style
H. Spanish style
I. Ethnic dining
J. International style
K. Vegetarian
L. Fast food
M. Pizza restaurants
N. Cafés
O. Bakeries/teashops
P. Bars/night spots
Q. Pubs

Another culinary option for visitors is to simply follow the Oslo tradition of buying fresh shrimps from a fishing boat in front of the City Hall and eat on the pier or while strolling through the streets.
