Back-History - Girnish Tan

Girnish Tan was born in 1895 in the small Welsh mining town of Dnangyrwth. She received enough schooling to be literate, then joined her mother and father, working in the mines at age five, though two years after, she lost her left eye in an accident. A year later, a baby brother, Johnny, was born, but he died of tuberculosis at age three in 1904. The incident was emotionally scarring to Girnish, but her heretofore previously unknown talent as a medium helped her through the trying time. Johnny’s wraith followed her around, keeping the young girl company, and vowed to do so as long as she lived.

An old man, revered in the small town, recognized that young Girnish had special talents, and taught her much about finding out anything she would ever want to know about others. This was something that she would value later in life. Tommy Tan died in 1911 of Black Lung Disease, and that winter his wife, Elisabeth, fell ill with pneumonia and also passed away. Girnish took the deaths of her parents hard, and when the boy she loved and was to marry, enlisted in World War I, she joined the Red Cross Nurse Corps just to be near him.

War was hell for the young Welsh girl, but after typhus wiped out her fellow nurses, Girnish disguised herself as a man, and fought as a soldier. Wounded several times in the battle-shorn forests, she dug in as part of the trench front on the wasted fields of France, hoping to find her beloved.

One night in 1917, during heavy shelling, Girnish was mortally wounded, and lay dying in the muddy water of the trench. An 8th generation Nosferatu, who was a member of a warren living under the massive trench system, took pity on the girl and Embraced her. Unfortunately, as he was about to tell her what she had just become, a shell went off a bit away, and a piece of shrapnel took off her sire’s head. Girnish would have died come dawn if two of the warren members had not been watching from the shadows. They took her below and told her everything, helping her through the difficult Becoming.

Thankful for their help, she stayed with the other Nosferatu until the end of the fighting. After the war, Girnish returned to Dnangyrwth to settle down and return to her old job in the mines, but was crushed by the news that the man she loved had died during the pandemic of Spanish flu in 1918. While working in the mines, she picked up a knowledge of the mechanics of machines, and became adept at fixing them. Soon, however, the town grew suspicious of her solely nocturnal and extremely secretive life, and in 1925, she fled.

Living in the Dublin Warren and studying the magic of the Celtic, Gaelic, and Druid tribes of archaic times, Girnish managed to avoid the violent struggle between the Irish and British, Catholics and Protestants. Unfortunately, this haven was not to last, and the poor girl was left in 1937. She wandered Europe, getting caught in Berlin in 1940, and ended up in a concentration camp. There, Girnish met a Brujah masquerading as a German guard until he could escape to America. He became her protector, hiding her by night, for she’d told him that she was a Brujah as well. Thus, she survived World War II.

After the war, in 1946, Girnish came to America, where she tried to make some kind of living doing odd jobs at night. However, in 1963, at a party thrown by Toreador, she accidentally let her Mask drop, and when shunned by two socialites, Girnish realized what a monster she looked without her powers, and gave up on holding any semblance of a mortal life, retreating to the sewers. There she stayed, often traveling through the country in that manner, and came to Swarthmore in 1988.

Under the teachings of Mange, Girnish slowly learned to over-come her shame at what she was, and became suprisingly adept, even for a Nosferatu, at finding out the secrets of the city citizens, Kindred and kine alike. After his death, she inherited leadership of the warren, though stayed underground as Swarthmore changed above. The Sabbat came, were driven away, and countless Princes ruled, unaware of the labyrinths below. When the Sabbat swept through again, Girnish returned to the surface to help fight them off, then, after the hard five years of war, remained as Nosferatu Primogen, and leader of the Swarthmore Warren.
