Erik (Brad) has a problem: his new neighbor, although a kid about his age, has AIDS. Erik already has no friends, and now he's made fun of because of his neighbor. Needless to say, Erik isn't real fond of his neighbor Dexter (Joseph Mazzello)...that is, until he gets to know him. What develops is a friendship which will change both their lives forever.

Brad's outstanding performance solidified him as one of the top performers his age. He and director Peter Horton were known to get into shouting matches on the set, but what emerged was a very realistic, sensitive portrayal of friendship and loss. It is a testament to Brad's (and Joseph Mazzello's) acting abilities, since they did not get along too well.
