"No-wah" . . . Welcome to the Pawnee Nation Website.

The PAWNEE name is derived from the Caddoan word "pani" meaning "horn", describing the upright scalplock that was our unique hairstyle among the Native Americans of that day. The PAWNEE Tribal members are comprised of four confederated bands of Indians: the Skidi, the Wolf; the Chaui, the Grand; the Kitkihaki, Tapage; and the Pitahauwit, Republican. The PAWNEE are the only Tribe not to war against the U.S. Government. The PAWNEE gain fame as scouts for the United States Army, and a battalion of our elders served from 1865 to 1885 within the army in the Plains.
