Florida’s Unique Fauna

The State of Florida has a unique fauna entry; no other state in the US has an ecosystem like Florida. There are various regions in Florida. In northern Florida, it is mainly Woodland, and occasional wetland. In Southern Florida, various wetland preserves have been established. The Everglades are home to several endangered species. Probably the most ecosystems that are in jeopardy are the Florida Keys. Florida has a disturbing growing population, and it should be in the State’s interest to preserve Florida’s precious wildlife, despite the growing population.

Here are some animals that make the State of Florida so Unique:

The American Alligator

The American Alligator is found throughout Southern America. It is mainly found in Florida and Louisiana. The American Alligator is a very misunderstood animal, most of the time they are hardly ever dangerous to humans. The American Alligator was endangered, but it made a huge comeback. Now their population is once again at a normal number.

The Key Deer

The Key Deer is very rare specie. Population growth is one of the many reasons why their numbers are so few. They only exist within this one reserve in the Keys.

American Crocodile

Unlike the American Alligator, the American Crocodile is endangered. One reason why the American Crocodile is much endangered is because of the fact that Florida has a huge population growth. There are only a few places where the American Crocodile exist within Florida.

The Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron is a very large carnivorous bird. They are common within the wetlands of Florida. They feed on a large variety of animals. They mainly eat fish; however they could almost eat anything.  They are one of the largest birds in Florida.

The West Indies Manatee

The manatee makes a seasonal migration down to Florida every year. Unfortunately, Florida’s population growth has made an impact on the Manatee. The manatee’s number was reduced, due to boating accidents. Many manatees were brutally killed by speed boats.

The Florida Panther

The Florida Panther is the most endangered specie in Florida. Only 50 Florida Panthers live in the state of Florida. Habitat loss is one reason why the Panther’s number is so low. Another reason is that many cars hit the Florida Panther. There are only two places in Florida where the Panther exist. One of these places are very close to where I live.
