JOHN CHARLES R.I.P.
The football world was stunned to hear of the death of former Cardiff City and Juventus star John Charles on Saturday, aged 72. During his prime, whilst scoring nearly a goal-a-game in the incredibly defensive (more so than now) Italian League. This led many to consider him the best player in the world. He carried Welsh hopes at their only World Cup Finals appearance to date, in 1958. Had he not have been injured when they played the eventual winners Brazil in the quarter finals, they may have gone on to win the competition. Charles played for Wales 38 times, and scored 15 goals.
WEST HAM CRASH OUT OF THE FA CUP
Fulham will travel to Old Trafford after beating West Ham United 3-0 at the Boleyn Ground. A great first half from the hosts was ruined by the continuous missed chances of Marlon Harewood. These misses were punished when Fulham scored thrice in the last 15 minutes.
PAVEL SRNICEK JOINS
Alan Pardew last week signed Pavel Srnicek for a month’s loan from Premiership strugglers Portsmouth. Srnicek is expected to warm the bench whilst Stephen Bywater is between the sticks every week.
TOMAS REPKA’S MISTAKE RELIEVES LEAGUE LEADERS
A mistake from the hapless Tomas Repka lost the Hammers two points at league leaders Norwich City on Saturday. Something positive came out of that mistake in that Repka got the chance to show how much he cares. During an interview afterwards, he was almost in tears as he struggled to come to terms with his mistake. If only more of our players showed this kind of passion. The same can be said of Christian Dailly, who threw the physio’s sponge in anger whilst being treated for a head wound when Fulham’s second goal went in.TWO MATCHES IN THE COMING WEEK - MATCH PREDICTIONS
Keep Smiling, Phil
