Launching

Most roller coasters are brought up to the beginning of the ride by a chain. However, this is not the only method. Many new rollercoasters uses metheds such as rotating wheels and catapults. In this section we will review the physics involved in a catapult launch.

Catapults

There are many different types of catapult systems, all based around one concept; insted of dragging the cars up the lift do build potential energy, they start the cars by gaining a large amount of kinetic energy very quickly.
One of the most popular catapult systems is the liner induction motor. These motors use electromagnets to create two magnetic feilds, one of the track and one at the bottem of the train, thta are attatched to each other. When the motor moves these feilds along the track the train is pulled at a high speed. The magnetic feilds can moved to accelerate of deccelerate as needed making this system very efficent and controllable, unlike most other methods.
