Introduction

Welcome to alpha version 0.22 of my RYL guidebook, this guide was formed where no other existed. To this point we have not had a guide or compendium that goes into detail on all the commonly talked about topics. Right now the guide is nothing more than an outline, though over the following weeks you will see it transform into the difinitive source on all things RYL.

Basics

- Basic Movement

Movement is handled by the W,A,S,D keys for forward, back, and lateral movement, while the mouse is used to orient your view and attack, much like any fps. By default, the game will start you in mouse mode, hit escape or w to change to keyboard mode, at this time, there is no easy way to start in keyboard mode. C lets your character rest, and R is auto-run, for those long distance treks.

- Advanced Movement

Along with basic movement, you also have a variety of advanced movement otions. All classes using all wepons are able to perform the basic dodge left and right by pressing jump + left/right. Additional combos can be performed by certain classes, provided they are using small weapons (or any weapon with warriors), these include jump + attack moves, and jump + back + attack moves (only executable by duel weilding daggers on an assassin to my knowledge) Jump distance and height appears to be the same for everyone regardless of stats or class.

- Attacking (Melee + Ranged)

To attack targets with a melee weapon, simply click and hold the left mouse button while targetting the desired enemy for the desired combat length. To do hit combos, which result in higher damage and more hits, you must remain standing still and must hit the target continuously. If you are hitting the monster/person, you should see damage being done, or "evade" or "block", in rare cases. Attacking with a ranged weapon, such as a bow or crossbow (but not guns, they work differently), is the same as attacking with a melee weapon, except there are no combos to worry about, and as soon as the monster is in melee range, you can no longer attack. Your targetting icon will turn red when held over a creature to indicate when you are within attacking range with a ranged weapon. Posistioning is important in both cases, with melees, you need to keep yourself within attack range of the target while positionling yourself to get the most combo hits if the target is on the move (which happens frequently in group combat, and always in pvp). As a ranged attacker, you will need to learn how to dodge and slow down your target, while keeping it's attention focused on you, as if they run away, you lose almost all your experience.

- Attacking using Skills

Every class has basic attack skills, there are 2 kinds of attack skills, CAST, and INSTANT skills.

- INSTANT skills strike instantly, and can not be interrupted if you are attacked.
- CAST skills are somewhat more interesting, you must "charge" the spell, by holding the right mouse button. You can charge as high as you have currently learned, though it is not always the best idea to charge as high as possible. With most attack casting spells, charging to the top of level 1 yields the most damage to a single target, while subsequent levels are more focused on area damage, though the top of level 2 sometimes does more damage than the top of level 1 to one target, though the recharge time for the spell rises dramatically the more you charge. You can also have your spell casting interrupted if you take damage while you are casting, the spell will cancel as if cast, though will not take any mana. It is usually possible to get off a level 1 stage 2 spell in close range combat between hits, though you can still be interrupted even when you just click the skill and dont charge.

- Supplemental skills

As well as attacking skills, there are also "buff" spells to increase your char's ability, as well as healing spells and speed spells, among others. They come in the normal "Cast" and "Instant" varieties, but also include:

- PASSIVE skills, as the title implies, are passive in nature, and are active all the time, without any need to activate. These skills are usually weapon proficiency related.
- CHANT skills are basically aura spells, and activate when you first cast them, and draw from your mana until there is no mana left, or you have deactivated the chant by pressing the chant's skill slot number twice (removing it from the locked skill box).

Powerlevelling
- Basically just till 10, then give class suggestions

TECHNIQUES-------------------------------------------

Melee
- Group to level
- Hunt anywhere you can get a group
- Some monsters hit fairly low for their xp, mainly just maggots, if you can tank, go after these
- Learn to switch between mouse mode and keyboard mode for easy leaching/dot
- buy as many cooked meat as you can reasonably afford for your level

Ranged
- hunt risen-cadavers, then switch to huges, then group
- always buy the best arrows you can afford, if you solo you'll never have problems getting cash
- if playing a archer, max your voiceless arrow, it's your special move, and is rediculously powerful, dont go anywhere without it. At low levels, only put as many points into camo as you need to stay camoflaged to use your shadow skills.
- if playing an enchanter, make sure you're always buffed, and experiment with what offensive spell level works for you

Mages
- you have the power, hunt anything you want, if you die, you just suck
- Specialize in as few, powerful spells (aka fireball) as possible when you're 10, then diversify as you level up to maximize dot, at the expense of mana, however.
- You'll quickly find death spells arent that useful on monsters, despite their really cool looking spell effects, stay away from death spells until you want to pvp.

FAQ -------------------------------------------------

What is the "unlock the skill" option at the adventure trainer?
- See Chaos Stone

How do I use the Chaos Stone?
- Take it to an adventure trainer, along with 200k gold, and use the special option, you can reassign 3 skill points per chaos stone.

Where can I find boots/helmets .etc
- All armor accessories are now sold in the 4th tab (the blank one) of any armor merchant.

Where can I find level 3+ books?
- Only on monsters, the first ones you'll probably notice them on are Orc Leaders and Dark Wolves in the orc camp by watcher. You can get these around level 20-23 with a good group or 25-26 solo with a ranged/mage char.

Why do warriors suck so much?
- RYL is a pvp oriented game, nothing can be gained without sacrifice, and though your warrior may be living hell to level at first, they pay off in the end, and are incredibly powerful in pvp. At level 20, Ripshaft had over 100 fame fighting speedhackers, the net ability is infinately useful in pvp, and the warrior's attack damage is unsurpassed.

Why do most of the classes special skills seem completely useless?
- RYL is pvp oriented, use them in pvp.

Is there a better way to get health than cooked meat?
- Not in this beta. I've never found health recovery to be a problem, however. It's a fairly long wait to have a low-mid level priest or defender regenerate by sitting down, though it's the price you pay for having 2-3+ times the hp and defence of any other character.

What the hell is with the speedhackers?
- Server side checking reqires alot more overhead, and is simply not practical for this stage of testing. Protection measures will be put in place for open beta, but until then, suck it up and deal with it. Just familiarize yourself with the game, because when the speedhackers can no longer skate across the screen at mach 3, we will have a signifigant advantage, by actually knowing how to play.

Why cant I learn "such and such" skill?
- first off, check your requirements, put your mouse over the skill book you want to learn, if you see any red text, that's your reason.
- Alternatively, if you recive the error message "insufficient skill points" or whatever, you dont have enough skill points, which you can see at the top of your skills tab, in the form XX/YY, where XX is your currently allocated skill points, and YY is your total allowed skill points. You recieve one additionall skill slot each level, and you can also increase it through increasing int.
- If you get the error "Unable to learn skill" or something to that extent, then you have not learned the previous skill. You can not learn an advanced skill without learning the fundamentals first, regardless of level or stats. Max your junior skill to stage 6, which will actually push it to level 0 of the advanced skill. (typically accompanied by new abilities and/or a fancy new particle effect)
- Otherwise, you have not read my instructions, or you're bugged, so take it to the forums.

I keep on getting low to no experience for monsters I have solo'd, why!?
- Simply put, you dont know how to play. Near as I can tell there is only one way to lose any noticeable amount of experience when you are soloing a monster, and that is if he runs away. Monsters will keep their attention unless they lose sight of you, or you run too far away from their original spawn. To keep monsters interested, draw from a distance if possible, and when the monster arrives at your position, start dodging while maintaining an attack. Dont try to use your high level charges, stick to level 1 charges, you should have no problem getting out a few level 1 stage 4-5 spells between each dodge without the monster losing interest. And when you start to dodge around the monster, STAY IN THE SAME AREA, dont stray too far off, wander into another spawn, and complicate things, stick to where you are, dodging in a circle or back and forth. Occasionally you'll lose the monster due to lag misplacement, though it's rare and usually the monster will maintain an attack on you, so long as you keep the pressure on them. If you arent moving out of attack range, you should be attacking the monster.

So, what's with all the icons in the bottom left of the screen?
- long story, will get into it later. Most of it is pretty self explanitory. The sword means you are able to be killed freely, the happy face means you're a coward and went with the anti-war movement. The red/blue e1-e5 seems to do a variety of things, it's red when the balance of human vs demon is in your favor and blue when it's not. It seems there is both a skill and xp bonus associated with being on the least populated side, but the extent and conditions of this are still unclear, since the status rarely changes, and is nearly impossible to measure without dev help.

What's the difference between dual weild and single weild? What's the point?
- Though your attack power goes down when you choose to weild two weapons, your attack speed is increased signifigantly, typically resulting in higher damage over time. Most classes that dual weild do so because they dont have any con stat associated with thier levels, and will never be able to use a decent shield.

What happens when you choose to become a part of the anti-war party? (anti-ware)
- Naturally, you cannot attack or be attacked by anyone, on top of that, you only get about half experiece per kill than normal. You can only change back after 24 hrs have passed, so choose wisely. (and you're a bitch if you do, btw =P) I am unsure on any other effects, as I would never ever do this myself.

I cant see certain people, what's up?
- Usually this is a port related issue, make sure you dont have any firewalls up. Check your modem, your router, and your operating system for firewalls. If you dont like being DMZ'd, you can port forward UDP ports 20002 and 2000-4000 to your machine. On top of that, lag/server/client problems can also randomly cause this problem, if you're in a group, get a mage to conjure you, it fixes the problem quite frequently. If that doesnt work, relogging always does.

Highlighed tip 1 - Net attack rocks, use it.
