OCKERMAN FAMILY
Joseph A. Ockerman was born 1841 in Nicholas County, Kentucky and died while serving with the Union Army in 1863, leaving behind a young bride newly pregnant with their first child.
On
Christmas Day in 1862, in Nicholas County, Kentucky, Julia Ann Waugh, daughter
of Thompson Harvey Waugh and Lucinda Stacey Sudduth, married Joseph
Ockerman. Did they know they would soon
be separated, not only by war but for the rest of their lives?
Joseph
was just 21 years old when he died in Tennessee on March 23, 1863 during his
service as a corporal in Company “C” of the 7th Kentucky Cavalry, a
proud regiment of the Union Army commanded by John K. Faulkner. Following his death, Joseph was interred at
Nashville National Cemetery, Section E, plot 0624.
The
son of John Daniel Ockerman of Ohio and Merena “Reny” Edith Moler, a native of
Nicholas County, Joseph had 8 siblings, including his brother Christian. Christian later married Joseph’s widow and
raised Joseph’s son Joseph Washington Ockerman.
Joseph’s
paternal lineage can be traced back to his great grandfather, Daniel, born in
1764. We know that the Ockermans were
German; there is a theory that they may
have come from the area around the Oker River in Northwest Germany, hence the
name Ockerman.
