Types Of Gold Fish

Goldfish come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours, and patterns, and make for some enjoyable watching. All Species are omnivorous and are commonly fed vegetable/growth/colour/protein mixtures. They are generally quite docile and enjoy a varied diet and feeding times. With proper maintenance and care goldfish can last for decades.

SINGLETAILS

Comet

The Comet is the most basic of the goldfish. They are commonly used for feeder fish and do quite well in ponds. Comets can grow to be up to 30 inches long. The Comet is very daring and active, so it must be at least be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium. Comets can live up to 37 years. Comets have a slim, long body and an exceptionally long, forked tail fin.

Tempature: 65*F.-80*F.

Shubunkin

The Shubunkin is close to the comet goldfish. The Shubunkin does well in ponds also. The Shubunkin can grow up to be 25 inches long. The Shubunkin is called "scaleless", because it looks like it has no scales. The Shubunkin can live up to be 35 years old! It's only colour is calico and can have blues and reds in them.

Fantail

The Fantail is the starting of all the fancy goldfish. Fantails can grow to be up to 8 inches long, and 2 inches deep. Fantails have large tails, so some care is required to prevent them from ripping or tearing, but other than that, the Fantail is a great beginners level fish. Fantails can live up to be 20 years old. It's colours are white, orange, black on orange, white and orange, and calico. Fantails have a round egg-shaped body with a split tail fin 1/2 as long as it's body.

Pearlscale

The Pearlscale looks alot like a Fantail, except it's scales have a whitish raised appearance. Pearlscales can grow up to be 5 inches long, and 3 inches deep. Pearlscales mid region are much largerthen most egg shaped goldfish, making many aquarists think that the Pearlscale has dropsy. They can also survive lower p.H. better than other fancy goldfish. Pearlscales can live up to be 16 years old. It's colours are green, lemon, calico, black, and orange.Pearlscales have a large, raised scale, a fat, round body, and a tiny head.

Ryukin

Ryukins have a short, egg shaped body, like a Fantail but they have a high humped back. Ryukins can grow to be up to 6 inches long, and 1 1/2 inches deep. The Ryukin loves to explore, so you should have a few plants(plastic or real) in your tank. Ryukins can live up to be 15 years old. It's colours are calico, red and white, white, and orange.

Demekin

The Demekin goldfish is a cross between a Ryukin and a Telescope eye goldfish. They have a high arched back with telescope eyes. Demekins can grow to be 5 inches long. Demekins can live to be 15 years old. These fish are often mistaken for the Black Moor. The eyes of the Demekin do not telescope like a Moors though. The eyes are actually globe or almond shaped.

Black Moor

Black Moors can grow to be up to 7 inches long, and 2 inches deep. The Black Moor is a very playful schooling fish, and must be kept with another goldfish to be comfortable. Black Moors can live up to be 17 years old. It's colour is solid black. Black Moors have short, round stomachs, a forked tail fin, and 2 bulging eyes from the side of it's head.

Telescope Eye

The Telescope Eye is an egg shaped goldfish that looks identical to the moor except they are not black. The Telescope Eye can grow up to be 5 inches long. The Telescope Eye is also called the Dragon Eye. The Telescope Eye can live up to be 17 years old. It's colours are white, orange, and calico.

Celestial Eye

The Celestial Eye looks like a Telescope Eye, only with upturned eyes,and no dorsal fin. The Celestial Eye can grow up to be 6 inches long. Celestials are also called the "Stargazer", "Heavenwardgazer", and "Skygazer", because of their eyes that are always looking upward. The Celestial Eye can live up to be 15 years old. It's colors are black, calico, and orange.

Bubble Eye

Bubble Eyes can grow to be up to 6 inches long, and 1 inch deep. Bubble Eyes have a fluid filled sac under each eye, which can be ruptured easily. Bubble Eyes can live up to be 14 years old. It's colours are black, calico, and orange. Bubble Eyes do not have a dorsal fin. They also have a split tail fin.

Lionhead

Lionheads have a short, round body, a fleshy wen(headgrowth), and a small, split tail fin. This fish does not have dorsal fin. Lionheads can grow to be up to 5 inches long, and 2 inches deep. Lionheads are very poor swimmers, so they must be kept with other disabled fish like Ranchus, celestials, and bubble eyes. Lionheads can live up to be 15 years old. It's colours are black, midnight blue, calico, blue, and lemon.

Ranchu

The Ranchu is similar the the Lion Head but has a noticibly more curved back. The back should have a high arch with a short tail. Ranchus have a head growth but no dorsal fin. Ranchus can grow to be 5 inches long. Ranchus are also known as buffalo heads.

Oranda

The Oranda is a cross between a Lion Head and a Fantail. Orandas can grow up to be 5 inches long, and 2 inches deep. Orandas can live up to be 16 years old. It's colours are chocolate, black, midnight blue, calico, blue, lemon, and red cap. The Oranda's body is exactly the same as the Lionheads body, just with a smaller wen, and a dorsal fin.

Pompom

The Pompom goldfish are similar to the fantail but lack a dorsal fin. Pompoms have fleshy growth above there nostrils which are actually nasal septa in excessive growth. These large, frilly pompom looking flesh peices wave as they swim, hence the name Pompom. Pompoms can grow to be 5 inches long.
