1/10/03: Friday
Today was NHS induction day. It was fun. I was asked to give a speech on Scholarship. It was pretty good, considering I wrote the bulk of it at about 5:30 when I had to be at the school for 6:40. Everything complimented me afterwards, even people I didn't know. I was just trying to be witty by getting my point across. It worked well for a tough audience, but I got some laughs. I think Damaris's was better, hands down, because hers was a bit more involved. I said some kind of deep stuff, but got it across quickly with part informal, part formal humor. It felt really good though to have teachers I had (and those I didn't) compliment me on a good job. Some lady even told me I have a future in public speaking. So thank you to Z for being my public speaking teacher. Ummm... anywho. I felt bad, mom and dad said they'd be there, and I told them it started at 7. They walked in about 10 minutes after my speech. Afterwards they were obviusly upset, and I felt bad, but I couldn't do anything, I did say 7. I searched for that certain someone, because I was going to ask her to coffee, but she already left. So I hung around the cafeteria chatting with people, receiving compliments, but being humble about it because I didn't do that great. I mean yea, it was funny, but I did it in an hour, it wasn't very pre-empted, and it was kind of extemperaneously created. But it was cool because Katelyn's parents congratulated me (sp... I forget how to spell Congratulate... is that right? yea NHS...). I think I'm mostly just happy her parents remembered me seeing how I met them once when we went to the Dashboard Concert. Her mom was as nice as I remember, and her dad was quite funny. First time he saw me, I was leaving her house with my dad's car, and I accidentally over-accelerated and slipped on gravel, causing a bit of a tire squeak. Immediately I called her after I did it and apologized, and I felt bad. When I picked her up for the show that night, I could almost read in his eyes 'there's that kid who spun his tires in front of my house.' But it was all cool, he actually joked about it, and Katelyn intervened when she thought I'd had enough. Well anyway, I'm working up the courage to invite that special someone to lunch on Saturday or Sunday. I hope she's not already taken either of those days. Things are well in that department. I talk to her on the phone every day or two, and we talk for like an hour or two, and its great. She is a lot of fun to talk to, and it seems we could talk for a lot longer if we didn't have to get off and do homework, or sleep. You know, the essential things of life. Speaking of which, they are calling. Have fun and see you in school tomorrow...
