Located on Interstate-84 Milepost 82 is the first exit from the west to the city of The Dalles, Oregon, from the east it is the last exit to The Dalles.  The exit also is at Crates, which is a name used by the Union Pacific Railroad, and is shown on maps.  Crates was never a town as such, but was a switch house on the railroad, and it got its name from the Crates family farm, Edward Crate settled there in 1851 at where the Columbia River bends from flowing north to flowing west. This came from Lynn Ewing of the Wasco County History Site  and Cheri Dohnal of the Wasco County, Oregon GenWeb Site.  Many thanks to them, visit their sites to learn more of the history of Wasco County, Oregon.

One of the main attractions for folks who would exit at Milepost 82 is the Discovery Center, which is the official interpretive center of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.  But the real reason folks stop here is to get gas and other goodies at Gayle's Union 76 gas station.  Gayle's is a great place to get cigarettes.  Best place to get gas in The Dalles, so plan on a fill up here even if you are just passing through!  I get my smokes and Powerball tickets there along with gas for my car.
