& Technology

The Humanities Center is an instructional unit that provides materials related to reading and writing, and services that support students in their endeavors to master the art of written expression.
Computers
The Center maintains seven PCs and two Macintosh computers; the PCs are equipped with Word 2000 and, and the Macintosh with Word 98. All computers are connected to the South Orange County Community College server via Netscape Communicator. Students who are currently enrolled in Writing 180 may use these computers to word process, browse the Web, check email, and access My Site. Students may not load software or download materials from the Internet, nor may they leave documents on the computer hard drives.
Students who wish to print out their work on the Center laser printer must first purchase a print card from the IVC Library.

The Center has many books on hand for student and instructor use inside the Center.
- Dictionaries: English, Spanish, French
- Oxford English Dictionary
- Books in Print

Audio Cassette Duplication
Many instructors--especially instructors of reading, ESL, foreign languages, and fine arts--require that their students obtain copies of audio cassettes containing information and presentations relevant to their courses. To facilitate this need, the Center maintains a high-speed audio cassette recorder. Students bring blank cassettes to the Center, request a copy of a master cassette on file, and within 24 hours (usually sooner), students have copies of course materials.
Note: Students should confer with their instructors regarding number, size, and titles of cassettes required for their specific course. The Center does not duplicate cassettes other than those kept on file of instructor-approved course cassettes.

The Humanities Center staff can help
you locate the resources you need.
Audio Cassette Playback Units
The Center provides audio playback machines for students who wish to check out and listen to master cassettes for courses in programs such as ESL, reading, and foreign languages.
Materials Pass-Back Service
At the end of each semester, the Center serves as a repository for materials that instructors leave for students to retrieve. These materials--including final exams, papers, and notebooks--are available at the Center desk for approximately six weeks into the succeeding semester.
Note: Students should check with their instructor regarding the availability of end-of-the-semester materials.
Examination Proctoring
Instructors may make arrangements at the Center desk for students who need a place to take make-up exams. The Center offers a private testing room, and the staff monitors time allotments and materials for students taking exams.
Bulletin Board
The Center maintains a bulletin board where there are posted notices for on-campus events of interest to writers and readers, calls for writing submissions, local readings, and other news of interest to college student writers.
