Being
Blond is Fun for Ex-Savage Garden Singer
(ninemsn.com.au - April 11)
He's blond, he's single and he's having more fun than ever.Dressed in baggy blue denims, a check shirt, red sneakers and wrap-around
shades, former Savage Garden front man turned solo star Darren Hayes almost arrived
unnoticed at Movieworld Studios.
"I'm having more fun, I have to tell
you," he said revealing he had gone for a run in the bush this morning.
"I did an hour-long jog around
my neighbourhood and said hello to the cows ... everyone treats me as a person."
Since the Savage Garden split, Hayes has changed his looks, released
a new album and, even though prior to going solo the band sold 20 million records, he
genuinely feels like it's a new beginning.
"I love the fact that I have to start
again. I feel like I am 18," said Hayes who turns 30 this year.
"I feel like I am a brand new
artist."
Hayes modestly accepted a platinum record for sales of his first
solo single Insatiable which has shipped 70,000 copies in Australia.
The album, Spin, has gone gold with 35,000 sales.
Fans in Britain have also embraced Hayes' solo career putting Spin
at No.2 on the album chart.
"It has shocked me because my
expectations were actually quite low," Hayes said. "I am thrilled."
Success in the United States may take a little longer. This week
Spin is 86th on the US billboard 200 album chart.
"It's weird for me because the
album has debuted top 10 in every country around the world but the US.
"It is just doing what it always does for
me in the US, just bubbling under," Hayes said.
"I think if I were Ricky
Martin, if I were some kind of phenomenon, I don't know if I can handle that. I like that
it is real and it is consistent."
