Everything In Me Is Ideal
(Russian Magazine, January 31 2002)

At the beginning of December Darren Hayes visited Europe to promote his debute album. Olga Tretiakova met with ex-frontman of the most popular australian band Savage Garden and asked him few questions.

NME: What you were doing in your childhood, when in was raining outside?

Darren: Usually I was running to the street to walk under the rain. I was jumping on the puddles... Of course I catched cold

NME: What was the first thing you purchased on you own money?

Darren: Star Wars figure.

NME: What would you do if you'd become the God for the 5 minutes?

Darren: I'd make the whole world to be one country, and there would be no continents. Then all people should learn to live together.

NME: Is there any defect in your appearance that you'd like to change?

Darren: In my appearence? (Darren is very surprized). No, I think everything in me is ideal. Probably, when I was younger, I wanted to look differently, to change myself in some way. But now I understand that there's no need to change anything, because beauty - it is not something external, not just appearance, it is something inside you. So if I would be in peace with myself, I would look good. That's why my beauty is not just my resilient ass or my beautiful eyes, it is combination of external and internal things. Do you understand what I mean?

NME: If you'd be a woman, whom you'd fall in love with?

Darren: Darren Hayes *grin*

NME: Have you ever been detained by police and why?

Darren: Once I was almost arrested for exeeding allowed speed. I just bought my car then, and I was driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles. I haven't realised how fast I was driving the car. But police was very angry on me, because I was driving very very fast. They even wanted to arrest me, not just fine me. But everything turned out alright.

NME: What do you do when you depressed?

Darren: Eat chocolate. Do shopping.

NME: And it really helps?

Darren: Yes!

NME: Who's more frightful: pokemon or teletubby?

Darren: Pokemon. They are ugly. Teletubbies are pretty at least, they look like children. And pokemones are like very strange space cats! I hate pokemones!

NME: What is your first thought when you wake up?

Darren: The first thing I think of is what I can eat now.

NME: Do you believe in omens?

Darren: Yes I do. I trust my own intuition. I think you should trust your inner voice - it won't advice something bad. For example, when your hair stood on end, or it's shivering in your spine - it's a bad sign, definalty. I believe in such things.

NME: What was the most pleasant and most amazing thing ever happened to you?

Darren: I think it was when I took my sister's newborn baby in my hands for the first time. It was the most pleasant thing. And the most amazing too.
