Rogue Agent- Prologue

I never had no one that I could count on
I've been let down so many times
I was tired of hurtin'
So tired of searchin'
Til you walked into my life

It was a feelin' I'd never known
And for the first time, I didn't feel alone

Lucky Spencer raced through the airport terminal in quiet desperation, his heart beating fast as he approached the gate. At 21, he was taller and more muscular than he had been as a teenager but the same light brown hair that he could never quite control was there along with the blue eyes that always seemed to see straight through people. If the lines of his face were harder, the blue eyes shadowed, the curved mouth less likely to smile, well most people attributed that to the last year and a half spent working as one of the WSB’s up and coming agents. Only a handful of people close to him knew where those shadows truly originated and he preferred it that way.

He smiled at the attendant. “Did the flight from New York arrive yet?”

Please let it be late. Please. Please.

“I’m sorry sir,” The gate attendant was trained to deliver all news with a smile. “That plane landed an hour ago.”

“Damn,” Lucky swore mildly in disgust but remembered to thank the attendant. Double damn. She was probably angry. Oh hell, there was no probably about it. He checked his watch and the timer he had set. They had 4 days, 5 hours, and 23 minutes together. He didn’t want to waste one minute of it arguing, however pleasurable making up later would prove to be.

He shakes off the pleasant images that last thought brought to mine and tried to focus on where she would be now. It all depended on how angry she was. If he was lucky (God, sometimes he really hated his name) but if he was lucky than she would have taken a cab or probably a limo to his apartment and would be there waiting for him. He sighed. It was probably far more realistic to expect that she would take that limo to the nearest five star hotel and wait for him to show up on his hands and knees begging for forgiveness. He would to and she knew it. Hell, she knew him better than almost anyone and she still loved. It was he knew a miracle. Sometimes he even believed that if she knew it all she would still love him. God he hoped so. The thought of losing her was not something that he could even hope to begin to cope with.

You're more than a lover
There could never be another
To make me feel the way you do
Oh, we just get closer
I fall in love all over
Everytime I look at you

I don't know where I'd be
Without you here with me
Life with you makes perfect sense
You're my best friend
You're my best friend, oh yeah

He was just beginning to wonder how ethical it would be to use the WSB computers to track down an angry girlfriend and to consider how inconvenient it could sometimes be to have a girlfriend who had access to millions at her fingertips, when a tap on his shoulder distracted him. The frown on his features switched to a broad smile when he saw who it was. She was beyond beautiful.

“I’m sorry I’m late. We’ve been working with the LAPD to bust this smuggling ring working out of San Pedro and everything went down today and I tried to get out of there as soon as I could and...”

“Lucky?”

“Yes?”

“Shut up and kiss me,” Emily Quartermaine commanded softly as she pulled her lover into an embrace neither of them ever wanted to end.

Three, four, or maybe five hours later, she lost track of time the minute she saw him, Emily snuggled against the solid warmth of Lucky, wrapping her long legs around his as she lay next to him in the bedroom of his Venice Beach apartment, watching the play of the shadows from the setting sun across his sleeping face. She smiled in total satisfaction, almost afraid to move in case she woke him, knowing that if he was working a case he probably had made do with minimal sleep. Hopefully more sleep than he had gotten when everything had gone down in Port Charles. A cloud settles over her features as she becomes aware of a sudden chill in the room as some of the joy of the moment leaves her. Six months later and she still couldn’t believe it had happened at all. Her grandfather was dead. Her brother was in jail. Carly was dead. Sometimes she could still feel the cold steel of the gun against her head or hear the glass shattering at the Outback and the bullets flying or see Taggert’s blood on her hands.....

“Hey,” Lucky voice was a tender whisper that dispelled the coldness as he gathered her in his arms. He knew what Jason and Carly had done haunted her. Hell it haunted him. Seeing her fall in that garage. Watching her cope with the grief. “It’s over. All of it. No one is going to hurt you again. I promise.” He punctuated each word with a kiss.

Emily draws a deep breath and tries to put the past where it belongs. “I know,” she smiles up at Lucky and though its a little too shaky of a smile for his taste, he smiles back. “I love you,” She tells him softly.

“I love you too,” He lowers her back against the silk sheets. “And I’ve missed you like crazy these last few weeks. Some how we have to do better than once a month.”

She groans as his lips find the sensitive spot on her neck. Then she laughs when her stomach rumbles and after a second Lucky joins in and reluctantly pushes away from her. “Something tells me that someone is more interested in food than love.”

“Only for the moment,” Emily grins. “And you can blame it on a long flight from New York. You should know by now I don’t do airplane food.”

Lucky shakes his head in bemusement. “You won’t eat airplane food, but you have no trouble eating at Mickey D’s or Jack-In-The- Box or Burger King or any other fast food place.”

“Standards, Spencer. A girl has to have her standards.”

“Emily- you fly first class.”

“And your point is?” Emily says in her loftiest tones .

“Never mind,” Lucky gives up. He has the rest of their life to try to figure her out. He’s looking forward to the challenge. Shrugging, he rises from the bed and crosses the room to pull on a pair of hastily discarded jeans. From her vantage point on the bed, Emily smiles and enjoys the view. Of all the things that have taken her by surprise in this relationship, this passion between them has been the most mind blowing. . One touch from him and she melts and she knows he feels the same. When he turns and makes his way back to the bed, she smiles at him as he approaches, placing one hand on either side of her.

“What?” He grins at the light in her eyes. “Aren’t you hungry?”

“Definitely,” she reaches up and pulls him back down. “Just not for food.”
You stand by me And you believe in me
Like nobody ever has
When my world goes crazy
You're right there to save me
You make me see how much I have
And I still tremble when we touch
And oh the look in your eyes
When we make love

You're more than a lover
There could never be another
To make me feel the way you do
Oh, we just get closer
I fall in love all over
Everytime I look at you

Two hours later, Lucky watches Emily eat the plate of spaghetti in front of her as they sit at a sidewalk cafe a few blocks from his apartment. Dressed in denim and a Pokemon T-Shirt, she was a far cry from the poised businesswomen and major stock holder of ELQ Industries. Looking at her, no one would realize that she had a net worth that reached into the billions or that she could probably buy this cafe without blinking an eye. Looking at her now radiantly happy, no one would also ever realize the price she had paid all of her life for being Emily Bowen Quartermaine.

She was relaxed, carefree, and happy. He loved the fact that he had put that look on her face.

“So?” Emily asks him as she twirls the spaghetti around her fork. “What’s on the agenda for tomorrow?”

“Business people,” Lucky mocks. “Always dealing with agendas. Have you ever considered the possibility that we could just kick back and enjoy each other’s company?”

Emily laughed. “No way, Spencer. I know you better than that. You always have a plan. I think its encoded into your DNA or something. So tell me secret agent man, what’s on tap for tomorrow.”

“That is the worst thing about falling in love with your best friend. It makes it nearly impossible to surprise her.” Lucky reaches into his jacket pocket, avoids the gun in its holster, and withdraws two tickets and hands them to Emily.

Emily’s eyes widen as she looks at the tickets. “Oh my God,” She comes close to squealing and settles for giggling excitedly. “Three day passes to Disneyland.” She looks up at him with shining eyes. “Disneyland. Mickey Mouse. Toon Town. Space Mountain. Star Tours. Peter Pan. Small World. I’ve never been in my whole life. Oh my God. “ She reaches over and kisses him soundly on the lips. “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

“As much as I love to take the credit and I really do,” Lucky grins ruefully, “Disneyland was Robin’s idea. She and Frisco go a lot and she thought you’d get a kick out of it.”

“I’ll have to call her and thank you. Maybe we can double date?” Emily suggests and Lucky frowns.

“I spent twelve hours on a stake out with Frisco last week.” Lucky shudders at the memory. “I want you all to myself this time.”

“Sounds good to me,” Emily smiles. “I can’t believe I’m finally going to see Disneyland. Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Dumbo,” she looked at Lucky. “I don’t know what to say to thank you. I mean really thank you.”

“That shine in your eyes is all the thanks I need. I love you Emily Quartermaine.”

“I love you too.”

Neither of them noticed the silent figure in the trench coat watching them from across the street, his long stringy gray hair hid by a hat pulled low over his head.

Cesare Faison watched the happy young couple carefully.

“Enjoy it while you can my dearest Lucky. It won’t last much longer.”
