Domestic violence and emotional abuse are behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other. Partners may be married or not married; heterosexual, gay, or lesbian; living together, separated or dating.
Physical Abuse
- Spitting on
- Pushing and shoving
- Shaking
- Holding down
- Restraining
- Pulling hair
- Causing bruises
- Punching and choking
- Inflicting burn or cuts
- Hitting specific body parts
- Throwing against walls
- Lacerations needing stitches
- Hitting with object
- Injuring back
- Damaging teeth
- Internal injuries
- Miscarriage
- Using Weapons
Psychological Abuse
- Making jokes that demean
- Puts down
- Strict expectations
- Insults: stupid, ugly etc.
- Yelling
- Intimidation
- Ignores ideas or feelings
- Jealousy , rage, paranoia
- Threats to kill, harm, destroy property, take children, use weapons, or commit suicide
- Isolation: Checks up on, won't leave alone, limits use of car or phone
- Labels as crazy, insane, depressed
- Blames partner for violence
- Hurts or scares kids and blames partner
- Rips clothes
- Humiliates in private/public
- Keeps from sleeping
- Hurts or kills pets
Sexual Abuse
- Sexual put-downs:
- Embarrassing sexual comments in private and in public
- Sexually touching in uncomfortable ways
- Sex expected as duty
- Withholding sex to punish
- Accuse partner of being a whore or animal for enjoying sex
- Forcing sex by threats or violence. Unwanted sexual acts - oral, anal, use of objects, etc.
- Sexual humiliation
- Committng Incest
- Severe violence during sex: hitting, biting, using ropes, belts etc.
- Beats partnr after sexual intimacy
- Deliberately cause pain during sexual activity
