For those of you who really want to decipher the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of your Volkswagen or Audi I have recently found information which tells exactly what each letter and number means out of the 17 characters. You could use this if all you had was a VIN number and absoultely no information about a car but after you were done you would know where it was made, what it was and what options it had as well as the build number. BELOW ARE ALL 17 DIGITS OF A VIN (FROM 1980-ON ALL MFG'S HAVE TO HAVE A 17 DIGIT VIN) Remember I's are always 1's and O's are always 0's.

WMI is the first set of numbers representing World Manufacture Index
VDS is the second set of numbers representing Vehicle Descriptor Section
VIS is the third set of numbers representing Vehicle Identifier Section
