Perhaps one of the fastest growing hobbies in the country, the sport of scuba diving is perhaps the most interesting way to spend a holiday. Lovers of the sun, sea, sand and surf should go one better to explore the magnificence of the oceans and not simply skim the surface of its treasures.

There is, undoubtedly, no better way to enjoy the mysteries of the underwater kingdom then to glide through its depths, surrounded by its many inhabitants, an occurence that will leave you spellbound at the myriad of colours around you.

Malaysia can boast of a number of interesting 'dive' destinations that are famous throughout the world. Perhaps the most famous of these are the islands of Sipadan, Perhentian, Redang, Tioman and Paya. Many who have been to these dive destinations rate it as some of the best locations to experience the mysteries of the deep.

Most people are apprehensive about taking a first hand look at the marine world. However, signing up for scuba lessons will help to dispel this 'fear' and expose them to a world of interesting sights and new discoveries. There are a number of diving associations in the world that are equipped to provide you with the foundation for exploration of the mysteries of the deep.

Anyone who is reasonably fit and comfortable in the water can learn to dive. The initial level is Open-Water Certification which entails several classroom sessions covering theory and then confined water training which involves training in shallow water. The final step is open water training after which you will be certified fit to dive.

Most scuba diving courses include course material which you will keep, theory sessions which are confined to water and open water sessions, full board accommodation on an island for at least 3days/2 nights, rental of full dive equipment for the duration of the course and a certification and identification card which is the diver's equivalent of a driving license and permits the diver to rent equipment and dive anywhere in the world.

After some experience as an Open-Water diver, further dive education may be taken in the form of an advanced course where the diver could learn to night dive, deep dive or wreck dive which gives the diver the opportunity to explore interesting ship wrecks.

Scuba diving is a relatively safe and enjoyable sport but, as with any other sport, there is always an element of danger. It is always best to ensure your safety by selecting an instructor who is backed by a full-equipment dive operation who guarantees that all safety standards are met.

Another important point to bear in mind should you choose to pick up the sport is to be protective of the environment. Do not damage any coral forms as they take years to grow and always remember to abide by the marine park rules of the dive site you are at..
