Best Wedding of 1984
It wasn't just the wedding itself which made this episode so outstanding.  With multi-millionaire Victor Newman footing the bill for his nuptials, the affair was surely destined to be remembered.  No -- what struck us most was the look of love in the eyes of the two actors, starting from the moment Nikki Reed woke up and realised it was her wedding day.  The glow on her face was entrancing.  The set was grandeur at its best -- an international cast of sheiks, Japanese businessmen and oil tycoons, mixed in with Genoa City's everyday citizens.  For nostalgia's sake, six former Y&R actors were also on hand for this spectacle, which had Melody Thomas dressed in a $20,000 wedding gown.  Best of all was the romantic dancing sequence, as couples waltzed around the newlyweds while Patty Weaver (Gina) belted out "Through the Eyes of Love."  Not even the shenanigans of Victor's ex-paramour, Eve Howard, could spoil their happiness -- or ours.  -- Soap Opera Digest, January 15, 1985

:: VICTOR & NIKKI'S HISTORY ::

1984

Andy Richards

Andy found out that Rick Daros was the man who was involved in his wife's death all those years ago. Andy and Paul thought about going to Maui but since the only two witnesses to the drowning said that there was nothing special about it they decided not to go.

Rick in the meantime talked Nikki into taking a trip with him to Chicago. He didn't tell her that their final destination would be St. Croix.

Andy was still searching for the truth, and he found a story by Rory Davis called Death in Paradise in which a jealous man killed his wife in a swimming accident. Andy found out that Rory and Rick were the same person. He alerted Paul who told Victor, and the three of them headed toward the Caribbean.

When Rick and Nikki arrived in St. Croix they found out they couldn't go Scuba diving because of a storm, so they when souvenir shopping. Rick threw a tantrum because a local flirted with Nikki (According to the book "Memorable Moments" Rick got upset because Nikki took too long to choose cuff links for Victor - which version is true I don't know - both of them can be true) Nikki was humiliated and wanted to go back home. Rick said he was sorry and that he wouldn't do it again, and he talked her into going Scuba diving with him.

In the meantime Victor, Andy and Paul frantically tried to locate her. A man remembered the big scene Rick caused and directed them to the place where Rick and Nikki were staying - but they couldn't reach her, the roads were washed out - they had to find someone to guide them through the storm.

Victor did manage to get through to Nikki on the phone, but Rick disconnected the line. He tied Nikki up and began to call her Melissa - his dead wife's name, and he revealed the truth to her - that Victor was Victoria's real father. Nikki managed to calm him down and got him to untie her, and then hit him on the head with a skillet and ran outside, into the storm. Rick ran after her and dragged her back and promised her that she would die the next day.

The morning after, Rick ordered Nikki at gunpoint to get the Scuba gear on - and he let the air out of the tank. As he was dragging the hysterical Nikki toward the water, the rescue mission arrived.

Nikki broke away from Rick as he shot Victor in the groin (OUCH...) Andy and Paul got Nikki out of the water as she raced to Victor's side.

Victor telling Nikki that he's alive, after being shot with the harpoon

Victor was rushed to the hospital where Nikki prayed for the recovery of the love of her life.

Victor did survive, but the doctor told Nikki that he might be impotent. Nikki didn't care - Victor was alive! The first thing Victor saw as he opened his eyes was Nikki. She promised him that she would always be there for him and would never leave his side. Little Victoria was brought to the hospital and placed in Victor's arms - Victor held her tight and tears stood in his eyes.

Victor proposed to Nikki from his hospital bed and she accepted, of course, and wanted to get married right away - she had waited long enough. Victor wanted to wait and to have the big wedding he knew Nikki would want, but Nikki refused. She knew that he wouldn't marry her had he learnt the truth about his condition. Victor agreed that they would get married the same day!

But Victor could not be fooled for long. As he prepared for his wedding he looked at his medical chart and was shocked by what he had read. He called the doctor who told him that he could be impotent and told him he already informed Nikki. Nikki told Victor that she didn't care, that she loved him and wanted to be his wife, but he still called the wedding off, thinking Nikki deserved more.

Victor was upset and sad, he felt sorry for himself and wouldn't talk or speak to anyone. Nikki took it for as long as she could and then told him what's on her mind - how could he do that to Victoria and to her. Suddenly they were in each other arms, holding each other, clinging tightly together like they never wanted to let go, but Victor wouldn't change his mind - he still wouldn't go along with the marriage.

All Victor wanted was to get out of town and to forget about everything and everyone. Douglas drove him to the airport and in the meantime, he looked at photos of Nikki - stripping, and then it dawned on him - he no longer had any problem.

Victor and Nikki's long awaited wedding day had finally arrived. It was the most beautiful, magical night. The wedding took place in April 13 (Y&R most memorable moments book claims it was July 17, but the CBS site says it was April and it was always mentioned in April so I tend to believe that's it.) Nikki's dress was amazing, 70 yards of French silk faced satin and organza, with a 10 foot train and royal crown - all hand beaded with over 20,000 small beads and pearls. It cost $25,000 in real life :) ... (Rumor is that Melody wore polka dot boxer shorts underneath the dress - it was sort of an inside joke.)

Casey, Nikki's sister was her maid of honor, Douglas stood for Victor, Little Victoria was held by Liz Foster [Jill's mom] (As a special touch, Victoria also wore a matching bridesmaid's dress and carried a small bouquet.)

Many people were invited to the wedding - oil barons; businessmen;  the Brooks sisters - even Lori, who used to date Victor; Kay Chancellor; John and Jill Abbot; Julia Newman - Victor's ex, who wished him well; Ashley, who was about to get married a few weeks from that day and told her date that she wanted a cake and a dress just like Nikki was having - (little did we know that she also wanted the husband Nikki was having). Leroy, the owner of the Bayou showed up, telling Nikki that he never thought she would look this good with all her clothes on :)

Carl and Mary Williams, Paul and Lauren showed up. And Andy Richards and his wife at the time, Diane Jenkins Richards (cough cough - so Diane did know Victor and Nikki before 1996, writers slip).

The only thing that might have ruined Victor and Nikki's happiness was that the deranged Eve Howard was trying to poison Nikki. She disguised herself as a waitress at the wedding (with a horrible phony French accent) and gave poisoned brandy to Nikki. Luckily for Nikki the Wedding March began and she didn't have the time to drink from her glass.

Nikki walked down the stairs [the wedding was at the Colonnade Room] and looked lovingly into Victor's eyes as they said their wedding vows and finally, became Husband and Wife.

After the wedding Nikki went to the powder room to fix her crown. Eve tried to stab her but tripped when Casey suddenly opened the Ladies Room door. Eve went away in a hurry. Casey called Nikki downstairs - it was time to dance with her husband. Their song was "Through The Eyes of Love", the song that we will hear on many occasions for years to come...

At the end Nikki threw her bouquet - which landed straight into Ashley's arms (I don't really have to say it do I) and they began their life together.

Not long after the wedding, Nikki tried to find Victor's mother. She hired Paul and Andy to investigate Victor's childhood, all she had known is that his mother abandoned him in an orphanage in Buffalo 30 years ago. Paul and Andy found out that Victor's father had passed away, but that his mother was still alive, her name was Cora Miller.

Cora Miller - Victor's mother

Nikki brought Cora to Victor, the reunion didn't go well at all, Victor told his mother in pain that he didn't want to see her ever again, that she was dead in his eyes because she abandoned him. But when Victor found out that she was dying of cancer he took her to the ranch, and they celebrated Christmas in July so Cora could spend one Christmas with her family...
